Got 7.45 back on about 20 items, there's an aldi within walking distance of me so I usually pop up there for a small shop. I would have an idea of the prices. I put thought all the shopping except the nappies and wipes, then I used the voucher to get the nappies and wipes for 2 euro.

I use the card vouchers for my gas bill.

its less about a bargain, more a comfort that you can get the equivalent prices in Tesco with the convenience of all of the other brands and stuff from Tesco...

a few cent saving as opposed to a huge saving shows that maybe the price gap between the discount shops and the likes of tesco is as big as is made out.

Great incentive to shop at tesco
My wife got a voucher for 52 cent :)

It really doesn't. They've very carefully chosen what items to match on.

    I use both

I shop in aldi I throw items into the trolley, the price
rarely changes and there's no trickery
fantastic fruit and veg offers but the quality is always the same (good)
Once you get to the till you can get all your shopping on
the belt and it takes minutes to get out of there

I shop in tesco I look at everything carefully and am looking
at the receipt on the way out to the car

Allegedly Tesco were 4c cheaper than either Lidl or Aldi today for me but I don't know if that was before or after the €11 voucher they shoved through the door during the week...

I wonder what branded goods they are price matching.
I know they cant tell us for legal reasons, but has anyone been able to work which ones it is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,251 ✭✭✭Pang

Spent 125 on a huge cupboard/stock up shop and apparently only saved 9c.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,626 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

The aldi near me only has coca Cola that's the only branded product I can think of. And even the petrol station across the road is cheaper for coke. I know Lidl has more but I never go there.

The quality if Tesco food is brutal. The fruit and Veg is extremely poor quality and goes before you leave the car park.
The chicken is brutal, pumped with water and other crap.
    Meat, not great.
Aldi has great quality and beats them in price no need for all the silly nonsense Tesco does to trick people into shopping there

Any proof of these claims? There seems to be alot of suggestions of better quality in Aldi but I have yet to see any proof .
I would have thought all budget chicken breasts had been injected with water to raise weight. Aldi included.

There seems to be all different types and grade of chicken fillets in Tesco.
    The Everyday (value) breasts
Tesco Every Day Value Chicken Fillets 541G

The Better quality fillets Tesco Chicken Fillets 500G
And the Moy Park Fillets Mp Special Buy Chicken Fillets 450G

Aldi on the other hand have one product that could be compared. Irish Chicken Breast Fillets

I cant seem to find ingredients on any of the products online.

Im guessing the more expensive Tesco products have not been pumped, while the aldi and tesco everday fillets have been.

I would also think that the Tesco price promise was done between the Everyday fillets

Stick one on a pan and see for yourself. Chickens don't come that size. Tescos ones are absolute Mingin

Aldi don't use anywhere near the amount Tesco do.

Best proof is self proof. Buy a packet from each shop and check for yourself

I assume his proof is from his own experience in both supermarkets. For what it is worth I agree 100% with ted

You feeding an army? How often do you shop? If its weekly how the hell do you spend 40 euro a day on food?

A photo of ingredients on each pack would be a better form of proof. Anything other that that is simply hot air and unfounded.
There are so many anti Tesco posters on here its hard to find an unbiased review . Also a sweeping statement of the chicken being pumped without saying what product is again a fairly wear review. What chicken product. MP,everyday or finest?

Personally. I buy the more expensive free range chicken products as I tend not to purchace any bargain meats. I dont agree how the animals are treated . But that's a whole different subject.

Would agree with you 100% there.

Pity so many have been going out of business. I have lost my two local Butchers recently due to Tesco and Aldi chopping the prices of lesser quality meats.

    agree with that
fruit can be awful yet the most expensive out there

got a round roast there a few weeks ago and it was inedible compared
to supervalu for one and not the first time I chanced it but definitely
    the last
pork joints no better in my experience
    lamb there I find good

You don't actually get just money back. If some products are cheaper in Aldi/Lidl you get the difference. But if you buy toothpaste that is on offer in Tesco for 1 euro, and in Lidl for 3 euro, they also count that and they take 2e off. So I wouldn't expect big coupons if you spend 100+.
Some items are cheaper in Tesco (mostly stuff thats on offer) so that might bring value of final coupon down.

    I spend 15e and got 75c coupon.

i found the pumpkins to be a bit cheaper in tesco than in lidl , about 25 cents cheaper for the larger sized ones . lidl are charging by the kilo and have poorly labled price signs and that is confusing people at the checkout tills

Slave1 said it spot on on the first page of this thread...

Tesco are banking on people just going with them for their groceries after seeing this price match crap.

No messing about tesco... just lower your prices or see your irish customer share leaving to shop in lidl and aldi.

It is true though when chatting to mates and family... they always say when you have been a regular customer in lidl and aldi now and you do go into tesco to get a few bits, you always come out and say something like... "how the hell did i just just drop €60 on these few bits?"

    That's it exactly

In all the years i've shopped in aldi I never once got a shock
when the cashier told me the total
I always feel like I got a lot for the money spent

Then I fill a basket in tesco and pay maybe 40 euro for
example compared to 60/70 max in aldi for what seems
like a trolley full of groceries

I find dunnes so much better than tesco in terms of quality
and price so much so that I've often done my full shop there and
that's something I haven't done in years in tesco except for
when I get a voucher from work at xmas

I wouldnt trust a single word from Tesco. I still buy stuff there because often they have what I cannot get in Aldi or Lidl, but Im ultra ultra cautious and have to check weights and volume all the time because they have such a history of misleading promotions.

I see it as my mission to ensure they never get an extra cent of me. Its such a shame, because years ago I really used to love Tesco and thought they were great on price.
