Just watching the estate on 3e about a council estate in Waterford. Some single mother on bitching about only having 50 cent left in her wallet with a day to go before she gets her lone parent's. What stood out was she was puffing on a cigarette with a 20 box on the table.
What I want to know is there a bank account I could lodge some money into for her or an address I could send a care package of Fag's & blue WKD to tide her over till she gets her mickey money.

Bally beg is a ****e hole I lived there briefly about en years ago and it hasn't improved .
saying that theres plently of decent hard working people who live there and go to work every day why not put them in a documentary ? coz tv3 3e is tabloid tv trash.
    solution . don't watch it

Can't say I'd be terribly upset if we let the Americans carpet bomb Ballybeg in return for letting them use Shannon

Single mothers all over Ireland praying that another whipping boy is found again soon seeing as the Roma didn't last too long.

Is this a repeat of the The Estate that was shown earlier this year or a new series?

The point is when funds are low a responsible member of society will cut down on non essentials like smoking, I personally have no problem with her status as a single mother but her status as a sponger is a different story.

Is she a sponger cause she gets social welfare ??(as hundreds of thousands of others in this country do)

Yeah I'm not trying to bash single mothers, they do a great job most of them.
As you say if I'm struggling to keep the lights on (she owed the ESB 800 quid) I'd be prioritizing where my few bob went. A ten euro pack of smokes wouldn't be very high up the list.

afaik in the series she is a working single parent.
Its ok though, as long as people can use their dole to buy weed there is hope that civilisation can be restored.

No it's because she doesn't use it to better herself

Person A (responsible member of society) Gets social welfare, after being fed, clothed and housed they save some money for a rainy day or to better themselves with

Person B (sponger) buys drink, cigarettes and then complains when they don't have money for the essesntials

Its great to see TV3 is still continuing with its ground breaking documentaries. I think we were all getting tired of their unbiased traveller documentaries. But its fantastic they are investigating important issues such as people struggling to get by on welfare. I think I see an oscar for them in the future.

No but the fact of whinging about having to do without certain day to day items like electricity while she can puff away on a 20 box of jonney blue loses my sympathy

    What about person c
A mixture of a and b. responsible etc. but like normal people, feels the need to have the odd beer or cigarette.
And like everyone else in this country, whinges about it at some stage.
I just think single mother tend to be scapegoated for all social welfare grievances.

They should make a weekly programme just following a few single mothers on the scratcher around the place. Preferably overweight ones

Some weeks I don't have the money to go out for a beer, or even have one at home even though I'd like to, there's people with enough money never to be in that situation. I don't begrudge them and understand that you can't always have everything you want, even more so when you become a parent and are responsible for the life and well being of another. As for moaning, I think that it's way too socially acceptable this day and age, an adherence to stiff upper lip would make the world a happier place.

if she was a single father would you feel the same way? You do realise she works too? Not sitting around on the scratcher?
She may not be the epitome of perfect parenting but you might also aware that there are other individuals portrayed in the series that have spent most of their lives inside having lived a life of crime (and fathering several children non of whose lives they happen to be involved in) and yet you find the lifestyle of the single mother smoking to be a much better target for your condemnation. ?

Her status as a single mother and her gender are of no concern to me, if she was a man I'd feel the same. The only reason being a mother comes into it is because it imposes extra responsibilities both fiscally and socially. I also don't care if her money comes from the state or whatever job she has, if she's pissing it away on cancerous tar sticks instead of paying for electricity for herself and a young child it's not wrong to call her out on it.

When the rest of the people in the show are being discussed i'll discuss them, don't worry there's plenty of scorn for everyone

I sincerely doubt that (sure she's hardly worth the poke, she's ugly too amirite) but even so, basically you just have an issue with the fact that she smokes. OK.

Single mothers do get singled out in Ireland but the sad part about it is that it all just focuses on single mothers from working class areas and that is pretty disgusting to be fair.
