I have all my points - over here you start with 12 points and they take points off you.

So, please, explain it to me.
You get 2 points for speeding regardless the difference of speed between you and the limits?
Over here in Italy is 3 points if your speed exceeds by 10 km/h but less than 40 km/h.
    Then it's 6 points between 40 km/h and 60 km/h above the speed limit.
    And it's 10 points above 60 km/h.
All the points of any offence are double if the driver has been having the license for less than 3 years.
Along with the points there's a fine (from 160 to 640 euro for the first category of speeding, from 500 to 2,000 euro in the second category, license suspended up to one year in the third category).
And it's 5 points for the mobile while driving.

The curious thing over here is that we are provided with 20 points that are diminished every time we break the rules. Every two years we gain 2 points up to a max of 30 points. If we are left with no points then we have to go back to the driving school.
It's possible to attend driving lessons if the points are more than zero and gain 6 points for each series of lessons attended.

I got 2 points and a €80 fine for speeding about 4 years ago. Caught by a static camera for doing 167 in a 100 zone in my 530d BMW at 3.23 am.
Still have the car but its in storage as I cannot afford to tax it and its worth feck all to sell. Road Tax nowdays is €1475 - more than the car is worth.

If you'd had an accident, would that not have invalidated the insurance?

How long does it take for them to expire?

I've none but I think I may have been a bit over passing a speed van a few weeks ago!

Lucky not to be done for dangerous driving there.

    No penalty points

Been driving on a provisional license for two years with no L plates up and travel 400KM a week. I've been through one checkpoint and all they did was check Tax, NCT and Insurance. No penalty points are anything, I'm a good driver

Insurance is not worth anything if you don't provide the right information to the insurance company (including number of points) so that poster is essentially driving around without insurance.

I agree. TBH I was actually decelerating because I saw the break lights of the car that was about a 150yds in front of me but I did not realise that a static camera was in place.
I just had a look in the filing cabinet to see my copy of the notice and it is actually dated 2006 - so 7 years ago.

Passing the test does not make you a good and safe driver. I will do it eventually. Insurance up in March so will do it before then.

    3 years.
I had 4 until recently, I actually was done twice in the space of a week for speeding, idiot, but I did my time but forgot when they were due to come off so when the first letter came in and I saw the envelope I was thinking "ah jaysis, again?!" but relief hit when I opened it. And then almost a week to the day the other letter came in to say the last two points were cleared.
I like to think I've learned my lesson.

    Thread needs more outrage.

Is anyone in AH willing to admit to having been put of the road for drink driving?:pac:

Wouldn't be hard for me. If I see a drink I'm over the limit. Poxy 0.02% allowance. One bottle and no more or I'm over. Passed the test less this summer. 2 years ago I'd have been able to drive with 0.08% :(.
I know people that drink drive though.... Well by letter of the law but in truth they are still under the normal limit 0.05%

Never meet a checkpoint in my year of driving so I always wonder why they bother changing things they have no interest in enforcing.

Nothing much to tell, it was 16 years ago, I served my ban and learnt a life lesson.

He was a funny judge though, a girl was in court the same day for the same offence only she hit another car.

She turned on the waterworks and had mammy and daddy each side of her looking all worried for added affect, it worked because she got the probation act.

I got good news and bad news in the post yesterday

Good news: My 12 month Xbox live subscription so that I can play online again! GTAV online!! :D
Bad new £60 fine and 3 penalty points. Speeding. 38mph in a 30 zone. (bullsh!t, but whatever)

Que somebody making an argument that video games like GTAV are a bad influence.

...well at lease I didn't get caught for mowing down all those hookers and then flipping the car onto a crowded footpath.

in gtav you get driving stars not points lol

1 star minor offence - 6 stars army+cops+fbi hunts ya down and kills ya

I have 4, although 2 are due to expire soon. I got 2 for going 55 in a 50 KPH zone, and another 2 for overtaking a very slow old man in a 50 KPH zone. I fecking hate the 50 zones.

    ah 16 years ago?

If you weren't drink driving 16 years ago, you were probably still in nappies!

    Huh?
I am making a light hearted allusion to the fact that drink driving was much more common in Ireland 16 years ago.

I have none and I have never had any since the points scheme was introduced. Of course I've just probably jinxed myself by posting that.

I have 2 for using the mobile phone while driving. I have a perception that it's much easier to get them now than it was a few years ago.

    None, have never received any!

Only ever received one parking ticket though - shopping with someone who found it difficult walking at the time. I knew my ticket-time was up; but the day was going so well; it was so enjoyable shopping & having lunch that I chose to ignore the watch and risk the ticket.

I actually didn't mind paying the 80?euros at the time. The person even offered to go halves with me. Such a fun day-trip to Limerick City all those years ago :) & the warden was there when I reached my car but I just hopped in & left.

    No penalty points ever though.
