One of them gets into the apartments knocks on my door offering gas something or other Today.

    1. Annoyed that he got into the apartment complex this is private property.

    2. Had all my details as I'm guessing there the ESB ?

But my real problem is how can they give my details to some plebe chugger its breach of data protection is it not ? I did not sign up to anything giving them this right.

Sorry to be a pedantic asshole but Electric Ireland chuggers can't exist can they? Doesn't chugger mean 'charity mugger'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,798 ✭✭✭✭hatrickpatrick

Chugger pretty much now encompasses all forms of unsolicited "sign up to something" harassment.

He most likely stole your ESB bill out of the post.

Don't really need your address to knock on your door.

Not registered with any at this address and register of electors i assume is a government department that's not allowed to share your personal date with anyone ?

There are an awful lot of legitimate ways to get someones details. If you really want to know, ask them

I haven't heard it used like that before, and hope it doesn't catch on. Chugger to me is the new "C" word, a vile scumbag who only gets away with it due to lax begging laws. I have far less issue with door to door sales.

I'm sure you have signed up for some service, somewhere at your current address.

Actually, OP, now I think about it even if you're not getting your power from Electric Ireland, you will be registered on their network since they run the meter reading service for all the others.

Ahh no! Let's maintain some standards. Only a 'charity' uses "chuggers", all others use 'clipboard engineers'.

Now, as to how they got your address, is there data freely available from the electoral lists which might explain how they got it? Is it possible they simply look at the data they have from their own customer lists and then pick all the missing numbers? That would give them your address (but not your name).

BTW, Electric Ireland cannot get information from ESB Networks about customers / home-owners, so that's not where they get it. You said yourself that the other businesses had it, so an electoral roll is more likely to be the source.

TBH I don't get the big deal. If you don't want to talk to them, ask them to go away.

And as for getting in, one of your neighbours must have buzzed them in.

Well would you be ok with us simply calling them "obstards" then, short for Obnoxious bastards?

OP, your Tin Foil hat is obviously misaligned. 26 Degrees inclination and 42.3 degrees rotation, it couldn't be easier!

No they don't. ESB networks run the meter reading. Electric Ireland are a completely different legal entity.

If the OP is registered with someone for electricity then they'd have his details to call selling Gas.

I don't open the door to strangers anymore, it's not worth it. All our friends know that they need to let us know that they're calling to us in advance. I'd never just show up at a friends house unannounced. As for door to door sales it seems to be going backwards these days, anything I want to buy I can buy online. I'm sure as hell not going to buy something from some stranger who knocks at my door.

Yeah I don't answer the door either. I usually know who is calling and when. Ignoring everyone else hasn't backfired on me yet.

I don't answer the phone either unless it's someone who wouldn't ring me unless they need to talk to me. If it's urgent, they'll leave a message and I'll ring em back. Don't want to be talking ****e on the phone to people.

Christ, I'm turning into a grumpy old f**ker.

Sign him up for porn and viagra bargain text alerts. He has no issue using your info to annoy you, dont see why you cant do the same.

Strangely I have had less people coming to the door since I moved into an apartment in the city center. Before I would never answer the door as it would be someone looking for money but here I answer the door because it has never been TV licence inspectors or people looking for money. The downside is takeaways can never find the place.

Must be a good amount as there very aggressive. You would think if there was not much money in it they would just accept no. As the wife answered the door to him i was in the bathroom. I had to come out and shut the door in his face.

They work on commission and it's hard to get people to sign up.

I never sign up for anything at the door, and when these 'clipboard engineers' come to my house I politely ask what they're selling and say "no" then close the door without listening to any debate.
