    Bing is probably up there too because a lot of people's work computers would have no alternative other than IE for internet.

    Can still use Google with IE, or, if you really wanted Yahoo :confused:

    Looking through other countries it's very interesting to see. Saudi Arabians seem to enjoy their porn and torrenting for example! Also interesting that Google.com.br is popular in Ireland too! Didn't know there were many Brasillians here.

    You'd be surprised! The population of Gort was estimated at one point to be almost 1/3 Brazilian

    Exactly. For some reason, a lot of Boardsies seem to think that Boards is the official "voice" of Ireland.
    While the demographics are going to be somewhat skewed(though less so as time goes on. There are far more women here than compared to a few years ago), in certain areas it's quite predictive of Irelands trends. Politics for example. Polls here tend to mirror election results remarkably well. And that's in spite of the demographic that would have more say Sinn Fein supporters than the general.

    Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

    Coincidence my friend. Boards is as far removed from real Irish life as Friends is from real American life.

    Fairly off the mark in 2011 for the generals as well.

    Boards.ie has slipped down the list in the past few years but it's bucking the trend for bulletin board sites. That said, I was talking to a friend of mine who's 23 or so and I mentioned this site to her and her reaction was to the effect that only grannies use this site. I had to correct her inasmuch as the gender description but couldn't argue the point any farther.

    Here's the result of the boards.ie poll for the 2011 general election that I posted on FB in advance of the elections:
    Election prediction:*

    FG: 63 seats;
    Lab: 46 seats;
    SF: 26 seats;
    Indep/Other**: 18 seats;
    Green: 5 seats;
    PbP: 3 seats;
    FF: 3 seats;
    SP: 2 seats.

    No overall majority. Fine Gael-led coalition. SF in lead opposition.

    *The quanitative statistical margin of error on raw data is only approx. +/- 0.69%. Qualitively, the demographic polled is unlikely to be representative of the voting population. There was no way to eliminate any disenfranchised persons from the poll.

    **Includes South Kerry Independent Alliance (1 seat) and Workers and Unemployed Action Group (1 seat).

    I seriously question how accurate that ranking is. There is about 10,000 brazilians in Ireland. But yet google.br is number 84. But yet there is no sites listed for all the Czech , Romanians and Chinese and there is tons of them here

    There is not a lot of Czechs here. And when you say Romanian, do you mean Roma? Romanians are very internet savvy. The Roma are not. There are a lot of Roma here, there are not a lot of Romanians.

    Ask.com? Really?

    I'd like to ask them how they pulled that one off tbh. Brutal site. Don't know anyone who uses it. Usually installed as part of the ask.com toolbar when installing shyteware (auto ticked) ... Hey, I just answered my own question!

    What? No they don't. If boards polls were correct, we'd have a government formed by Shinners. Sinn Fein have nowhere near the support among the general population than they do here.

    Anyway, its hardly a surprise this place is slipping in relative popularity. With quality posters leaving and the site admins treating the users like children (Dav's post on blasphemy is an excellent example, note to mention Safe-gate) and almost monthly new rules and forbidden topics its not an unexpected result.

    I'm surprised by the popularity of Facebook in several European countries. Between work and travel I have amassed a few friends in my time from all corners of Europe, and to a man the pages of most of the French and Italians are barely used. Very few photos (foreigners don't really go for photos of them and their friends out on the beer for whatever reason), no status updates, nada. So it is quite surprising to see that FB is the number one site in these countries.

    I actually find that list hard to believe. Surely there are more Pornhub viewers than XHamster?

    PH mucked about with the sites format a few years ago, they lost a lot of traffic and never really got it back, Xhamster had been consistent for many years, they add new us ability features but generally don't muck about with the layout, so mute and full screen are always in the same place.

    done deal is the highest ranked Native site, and cars.donedeal gets its own entry, still ahead of adverts

    I stand corrected. :o:) TBH the last time I looked at a Boards political poll was a fair few years back. Though it's clear even when the polls were more reflective that SF got substantially more votes here than in the real world.
    Boards.ie has slipped down the list in the past few years but it's bucking the trend for bulletin board sites.
    I suppose FB and Reddit are biting away at them?
    That said, I was talking to a friend of mine who's 23 or so and I mentioned this site to her and her reaction was to the effect that only grannies use this site. I had to correct her inasmuch as the gender description but couldn't argue the point any farther.
    Funny enough I've heard similar from a similar age group about FB of all things, but I think in that case they were trying to be cool. :) I dunno about only "grannies" using Boards. My middle aged peers would be even more dismissive of the place, usually citing that old story of "overmoderation"*.

    The old comparison of comparing the place to the growth of a city is part of it I reckon. First it's a hamlet where everyone knows everyone else, then it's a village, where it's still easygoing and personal, but with more chance of stuff kicking off, then it becomes a town, a bigger village in personality, then it becomes a city, where it's less freewheeling, less personal, made up of loads of smaller communities, but with a larger spread of ideas. It's in that stage now, has been for a few years. Just so long as it doesn't turn into Detroit. :D

    I'd also compare it to a life trajectory and put the site in it's middle age. It has it's shít together, but tends towards the monolithic in approach, novel ideas are deemed suspicious, order must be maintained, safety first kinda thing. Maybe that's where the "grannie" idea comes from?

    *IMH it's not overmoderation as such, this place in general is very well moderated which filters out a lot of noise it would otherwise get. For me it's the over visibility of mods here that stands out. The "ohhh it's a mod" culture. At times it can feel more a site for mods than users, in the sense that in some forums at least it's the mods that seem to drive the forum and community, not the other way around.
