    Bing is ranked #24 and Boards.ie is #36. How did this even happen?

    I was going to say that I'm surprised Pornhub is used more than boards too but that would be a lie..

    IE default search engine for many I would guess.

    I'm surprised Adverts is more popular than boards. I thought it primarily would be boards people who use adverts.

    Same as myself! It's an interesting list though.

    only 2 places ahead of independent.ie - ouch.

    Internet Explorer users I'd assume. Default search engine as well as MSN.com being the default homepage in IE.

    IE default and maybe Windows Phones.

    I actually find that list hard to believe. Surely there are more Pornhub viewers than XHamster?

    Ask.com is #23?

    Wtf?

  • Posts: 0 [Deleted User]

    My guess is clueless people with toolbar crapware. Ask is bundled with so many things nowadays.

    Trying to change attitudes is a serious challenge. The amount of people who enter URLs into Google/Bing search boxes is unreal. They seem to act as if Google is the internet.

    I seem to remember Boards being ranked higher than RTE a couple of years back or did I get that wrong?

    Plus how do you measure such a thing? EG Boards is gonna be much higher ranking in personal interactivity than a site like google for example.

    More popular than the Indo and Mail though.

    Not sure if that's good, now I think about it.

    Hmm going by that list it seems that Bet365 are Ireland's online bookie of choice.

    also reddit finds itself sandwiched between ask.fm and a porno site

    A lot of boards.ie users seem to have an inflated sense of this site's relevance in Irish society.
    Most people look at me in a state of bewilderment whenever I bring it up in conversation.

    After Hours is another few notches higher again in the smugness department.

    I love the way Google.pl is on the list. Also, there's quite a lot of porn on there... Hmm....

    I seriously question how accurate that ranking is. There is about 10,000 brazilians in Ireland. But yet google.br is number 84. But yet there is no sites listed for all the Czech , Romanians and Chinese and there is tons of them here

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,575 ✭✭✭AlanS181824

    Looking through other countries it's very interesting to see. Saudi Arabians seem to enjoy their porn and torrenting for example! Also interesting that Google.com.br is popular in Ireland too! Didn't know there were many Brasillians here.

    Exactly. For some reason, a lot of Boardsies seem to think that Boards is the official "voice" of Ireland.

    In reality, its a safe haven for the more, shall we say, alternative, voices of Irish people.

    Bing is probably up there too because a lot of people's work computers would have no alternative other than IE for internet.

    While the demographics are going to be somewhat skewed(though less so as time goes on. There are far more women here than compared to a few years ago), in certain areas it's quite predictive of Irelands trends. Politics for example. Polls here tend to mirror election results remarkably well. And that's in spite of the demographic that would have more say Sinn Fein supporters than the general.

    Coincidence my friend. Boards is as far removed from real Irish life as Friends is from real American life.

    Fairly off the mark in 2011 for the generals as well.

    Boards.ie has slipped down the list in the past few years but it's bucking the trend for bulletin board sites. That said, I was talking to a friend of mine who's 23 or so and I mentioned this site to her and her reaction was to the effect that only grannies use this site. I had to correct her inasmuch as the gender description but couldn't argue the point any farther.

    Here's the result of the boards.ie poll for the 2011 general election that I posted on FB in advance of the elections:
    Election prediction:*

    FG: 63 seats;
    Lab: 46 seats;
    SF: 26 seats;
    Indep/Other**: 18 seats;
    Green: 5 seats;
    PbP: 3 seats;
    FF: 3 seats;
    SP: 2 seats.

    No overall majority. Fine Gael-led coalition. SF in lead opposition.

    *The quanitative statistical margin of error on raw data is only approx. +/- 0.69%. Qualitively, the demographic polled is unlikely to be representative of the voting population. There was no way to eliminate any disenfranchised persons from the poll.

    **Includes South Kerry Independent Alliance (1 seat) and Workers and Unemployed Action Group (1 seat).

    There is not a lot of Czechs here. And when you say Romanian, do you mean Roma? Romanians are very internet savvy. The Roma are not. There are a lot of Roma here, there are not a lot of Romanians.

    Ask.com? Really?

    I'd like to ask them how they pulled that one off tbh. Brutal site. Don't know anyone who uses it. Usually installed as part of the ask.com toolbar when installing shyteware (auto ticked) ... Hey, I just answered my own question!
