    I hate fraud and dishonesty.
BUT the Govt should show they mean business by starting at the top of the ladder.
Not one banker or corrupt politician in jail yet is a measure of their intent with the elite. Does anyone believe they don't exist after the Banking collapse, tapes and dodgy loans given to politicians? Not involving CAB in the investigation proves that they are exempt.

I have no problem being stopped at any checkpoint but I have a problem with the Garda being used to do the Revenue's job. They should be visible in the streets of our towns and cities.

I've see more civilized animals in Dublin zoo than I've see so called humans in halting sites.

Make of that what you will.

I think the Government should run a MASSIVE online, tv, paper and radio campaign to encourage people to report social welfare fraud.

I know there is an email address and some number but a real clear, loud and easily known accessible campaign and dedicated website that guarantees peoples anonymity. TV ads, press releases etc etc and dedicate staff to following up each line of enquiry, even if its laborious and hard going.

I know of one family in particular that are stated as legally separated, 2nd address for all official SW correspondence. They live as a family, family home in his name only, mortgage almost cleared. Huge extension, flat screen tvs, SKy+ in every bedroom, kids have all latest smart phones, gadgets gizmos, clothes & treats, expense not a problem. She works off the books for years no tax, he works fulltime. Single parents allowance , unemployment and every single type of grant / SW benefit / clothing / back to school allowance etc going is claimed.

No debts, great holidays, huge savings, pay for everything with cash. Does my head in at times .

Would I report them?? No - often thought about it when struggling with my own finances and trying to make ends meet but they are friends for years, don't think I could. Honestly, I would be sick with nerves if I was found out! HOWEVER, a nationwide campaign to encourage people to forward reports may help?

    Opinions?....

How much would that cost to implement or do you care? also you know an awful lot about this other family, I would suggest that if you stepped back a little it might lead to a less stressful life for you. There is more thing to worry about then other peoples lives.

I can't actually see how this would work, no pun intended. We have a shortage of guards. People have a right to privacy and I can't see anyone admitting to being a dole cheat to a guard. As far as I'm aware various Social Welfare departments don't share information with each other for data protection reasons anyway. Surely it would cost money to set up a department to check this information, we're told that means testing Child benefit would be to expensive to do, so how would this be funded?

It just sounds like a farcical knee jerk reaction to me, totally un-enforceable and there'd probably be some scumbag who'd successfully sue the state for a fortune for breaching his rights in some manner or other.

So you don't have the guts to do it yourself so you hope/expect others will do it for you?

It's an opinion that I've made having interacted with these wonderful people in my lifetime. For ever 1 decent traveller you have 100 bad ones.

I'm sure the mods of boards.north Korea will agree with you and I'll be sure to get the boot. You can then hassle people over criticizing Islam and the dregs of society to your hearts content.

Oh I do, I know them very very well, we are very close friends for more than 17 years, socialise together etc etc. Its not easy to step back because I am constantly aware of the great life they have as we share times together.

I don't begrudge them their happiness or lifestyle to some degree, but I am aware when I have mortgage payments, a vet bill, car tax at the one time and cannot commit to a night away with them, a dinner, even a take away etc, or when the bank account shows 'zero'. These are all treats, not essentials I know.

Not stressed at all about it, but if I was to examine it in detail, its easy to see that my partner and I are working our asses off to make ends meet while others aren't and are doing significantly better!

Of course I am aware there would be costs to run such a scheme - but would these be lower than the savings made by weeding out false claims?

I don't worry about their lives, they are doing fine. Its not a rant - its a discussion!

Nope - I'm being brutally honest about it. These people are friends. Whatever I think about their actions, Im not sure I could do it to them as I would be worried about repercussions (for them and me, and our friendship if it got out!)

I don't expect others to report them for me but I am wondering if however, such a campaign would work nationally?

Are there others in the same situation as myself?

And I make that you're bringing an anti-traveller viewpoint to a thread that has nothing to do with travellers.
I'm not a traveller supporter; I've served boards-time in the past for my views.
But this thread is not about travellers.

Then I imagine, someone so familiar with boards should know all about making sweeping generalisations, no?

Welfare cheats is everything to do with travellers it's there lifestyle.

Hassling people in the settled community before talking on travellers who's whole lifestyle is welfare cheating and criminality leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ordinary decent people are paying the brunt of these cutbacks when it should be a community who's lifestyle is abusing welfare and being a blight on our country in every aspect.

How has it go noting to do with travelers? It has as much to do with them as anyone else.

Or are they all doing their tax returns even for the cash jobs now:rolleyes:

I'll ask you again, are you "decent people" because I see no evidence of that in your knee jerk uber reactionary posts. This thread has already been Godwinned but there's a nasty whiff from the agenda you've brought to this thread.

I wouldn't say rattled it's a valid question. The guy obviously has a dislike of travelers and has bought it to the forefront of his posts. Would it be ok for someone to post that ALL Romanians or ALL the blacks are cheating the system? Of course not but he seems to think it's ok to say all travelers are doing it.

What happens if you go to the airport while on SW with a legitimate reason? Like going to a funeral back home or overseas or going for a job interview in another country?

How is talking about a community who's whole lifestyle is funded by unemployment benefits in a thread about social welfare fraud a nasty agenda.

When you see cuts to old people the under 25's and the way they are going to investigate social welfare crime and not even mentioning travellers.

If that makes me come across as a bad person with a nasty agenda, well then I'm proud to come across that way.

See the bolded bit in your post.

They haven't mentioned any particular group for a very good reason. It's because they can't just assume that any one group are all social welfare cheats.

    Your posts are racist.
