    well if its not on the eircom website i would expect they would simply put you on the package including landline, surprise on the first bill and a headache for them to amend

    wouldnt trust it unless it was in black and white

    I normally don't post but feel I have to add my experience with Eircom. I'm in IT for over 10 years and have always avoided Eircom like the plague and advised customers also. Every experience I've ever had, has been bad to put it mildly. Recently, a colleague mentioned how great eFibre is and his experiences tus far. I'm currently a Smart Telecom/Digiweb customer and have been for over 5 years without issue. I'm on their 25MB package but my line will only support 8MB at best. I checked on Eircom's site and eFibre is available in my area so I decided to take a chance. I ordered the unlimited package via the website and was looking forward to getting my new package. I received an email confirming this but noticed an issue straight away, wrong package confirmed on the email. Rang Eircom and advised this, turns out the wrong number was also on my order, which I inputted via their site, go figure. They advised that it must be escalated to fix this, someone will contact me within 5 working days. The next day a letter from Eircom arrived advising: "Your appointment date is th and the technician will arrive between 1pm and 5pm." Confused as to when "th" is, I called to confirm when my installation would take place. Case escalated and someone will contact my in 5 working days. Six weeks later and a weekly call and five escalations later, I called again. (I got into a routine of calling once a week once the 5 working days where up.) Finally I got an honest answer, they messed up my order, did someone not contact me? Then I was advised that they need to cancel the order on their end and re-process. Then the nail in the coffin came, this would take 20 working days to cancel the order then they could re-process, all this after their mistake. At this point I told them where they could go and never to call me, I would like to say again but they have never called me back anyway. I was then told he would need to put me through to cancelations for me to confirm that I'm cancelling my order. After a lengthly conversation about they cancelling my order and my saying I don't want them to reprocess my order, I had to confirm that I was cancelling my, Eircom already cancelled, order. Since then I've order a Vodafone package which is better value for better package, I just didn't realise they were available in my area. This has been ordered since Monday this week and I've been advised that it could take up to 2-3 weeks as switching from Digiweb is not straight forward.

    I gave Eircom every chance, 6 weeks is pretty patient and only lost my cool after the last conversation. I also informed the very first agent I spoke to about my past experiences with Eircom and my hope that they would prove to have changed their ways.

    Have to say - so far - Vodafone experience has been good. I ordered fibre from them on a Monday and it was all installed and working by the Friday. I was upgrading from Vodafone ADSL, though, which probably explains the speed of the process.

    daithaiX I would guess that the issue with Eircom is that switching from Smart isn't straight forward.

    Smart use Local Loop Unbundling, which means they have their own DSLAMS in your local exchange and your telephone line runs directly into this Smart DSLAM rather then an Eircom DSLAM as it does for probably 95% of people.

    So when you switch off of Smart to Eircom/Vodafone/Magnet eFibre an Eircom engineer has to go to the exchanges and disconnect your line from the Smart DSLAM and connect your line to the Eircom VDSL cab and phone connector too in the exchange. A bunch of other tricky things have to happen in the background too.

    That is no excuse for the bad customer support you received from Eircom, but just to explain that if you are moving from Smart, you might have to be a little more patient, with Vodafone too.

    Yeah the whole LLU switching offices is a bit of a mess .

    They've largely sorted out switching TO an LLU provider but I'm hearing lots of issues switching back again.

    The issue with smart would be more about getting the number ported back again.

    In general I find eircom technical support and customer care good (especially contracted online either via their own forum or live text chat).

    The big problem I have with them is their sales unit. I find they usually know less about the product than a random person on the street knows and they are too pushy which results in lots of issues in my experience.

    I understand the issues switching but to be told another 3 weeks to cancel and then a further 2-3 weeks to reprocess after 6 weeks of already waiting is having a laugh.

    We've found that often lines and services go live almost immediately after they order them but their customer service system has no idea the job has completed for days / weeks after!

    It's quite weird actually

    I've seen that on a few ADSL and voice orders where the local AXE or E10 exchange activated all services within a few hours of the order and the helpline were baffled as to why it was active and were expecting much much slower turn around times for some reason.

    They seem to put worst case scenario times on everything.

    Eircom Wholesale put a huge window on any jumpering job, and it can be done any time within that window, so wait times vary a lot. Then you get insitus that change over night.

    the only hope you have of speaking to anyone in vodafone after they have taken your order and payment details is to chat to the vodafone reps here...ive only found that out as of today!!im getting some sort of a response now rather than before where i rang for over an hour every day and got nowhere!!their customer service up to now has been a disgrace and bordering on a scam as they have my debit card details for a service i still havent got and still dont know if they are gona try charge me for nothing or hold me into a contract....i am so so sorry i tried vodafone...

    Eircom not releasing the line usually means there's money outstanding on an account,could be just a final bill that they haven't even sent you yet.

    Under their new rather ridiculous rules, you have to give them 30 days notice or they bill you a cancellation fee (eircom)

    If I were you I'd contact them to cancel and also log a complaint with ComReg while you're at it.
    Moving suppliers is supposed to be smooth and catch-free.

    BTW,Vodafone have a broadband only offer: I got Fibre broadband unlimited as a standalone for €25 a month,was told it's for VF mobile customers only but the CS person said "it depends who you get when you ring them", a mate of mine has same offer & he's not a VF mobile customer.

    Was on €32 a month package and upgraded to fibre,if I took a 2 yr contract instead of a year then it reduced to €25.
    Never had a problem with VF for my broadband so saving €84 a year was a no-brainer,most people don't want to be tied into long contracts but as I said,the service has been flawless so I had no problem with the 2 yr contract.

    what's the story with this "data extension kit"? I thought that the engineer can place the new socket anywhere in the house...
    My main computer is wired to the router in the living room and so I want the fibre modem to be installed there as well...

    Can any fibre user confirm this please?
    And is the extension kit free with Vodafone installation?

    Why not simply go with Homeplug? (also called Ethernet power adapter), you can grab one 3-4 times cheaper off of amazon. I've got TP-Link 500Mbps one and love it!

    It's only a deal breaker for some. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for us, for example. We have 50/10 VDSL here in Germany and don't go near the FUP limits UTV etc. are likely to introduce. We just want fast broadband, not to download the internet.

    FUPs are fine if they keep the QoS high and the cost low for users like us. For those who need/want to download masses of data, they should be prepared to pay more for it, like any other utility IMO, certainly shouldn't be subsidised by the majority of users who don't go anywhere near FUP limits.

    It's a very good price (remains to be seen how good their network is of course) compared to the existing offerings for most people who aren't concerned about FUP limits.

It does not say that in the T&Cs and I don't believe it will be the case, otherwise it would be ridiculously expensive compared to a bundle straight from Eircom! I am pretty sure it's €30 connection (assuming you have an Eircom line already) and then €20 a month and that's it. It's actually cheap.

    That's why you go for their €32 package. UTV are a terrible company for broadband, they clearly want money over good broadband. It's only worth it if you're an auld couple who just check their emails and not bother with video-hosting websites.

    My mother is a Vodafone mobile customer, so I'm going the Simply Broadband Max package.

    I had VF fibre installed a couple of weeks ago. I asked the (Eircom) engineer if he could put the socket in a different room to the existing phone socket (which is in the hall) and he said no. That was that. No "data extension kit", no nothing! So wi-fi is poor upstairs, which is disappointing.

    The problem is that VDSL2 is very sensitive to bad wiring and they want to get the modem onto the NTU which is ideally where the line enters the house.

    The 'data extension kit' is basically just a plug-in cable from the non-filtered phone socket on the NTU to wherever you want your modem (within reason).

    In our house, the line comes in to the attic and then goes on CAT5e cable down to a flush-fitted NTU, so the engineer was happy enough to just install it there.

    Your best bet is using wifi-repeaters, powerline networking or a run of CAT6 plugged into one of the ethernet ports on the back of the modem and an ethernet socket somewhere closer to where you want the computer and the signals to come from.

    Don't run too much telephone cable between the modem and the socket or you risk destabilising the signal too. Cheap telephone cable's generally just straight wires without any twisted pair.

    The incoming phone line's high quality copper (solid) twisted pair. So, they want to get the modem onto that without any noise being introduced. If you add a long extension onto that of non-twisted pair, you'll potentially reduce your speed or stability.

    If you really want to do it, make up a run of wire with some CAT5 cable onto an RJ11 or RJ45 plug (you can get all the tools for this in maplins or anywhere else that does that kind of thing).

    Wire the line to the two centre pins only.

    Plug that into the modem port on the NTU and wire a phone jack to the other end of the cable.

    Easiest way of doing it is home plugs though and another router/wifi hub.

    That's why you go for their €32 package. UTV are a terrible company for broadband, they clearly want money over good broadband. It's only worth it if you're an auld couple who just check their emails and not bother with video-hosting websites.

    My mother is a Vodafone mobile customer, so I'm going the Simply Broadband Max package.
    The equivalent UTV price for that €32 Vodafone product is €25 (also with a FUP), that's €84 a year cheaper. I was with UTV years ago when ADSL first became available in Ireland. It wasn't plain sailing but many of the problems were Eircom's fault. I honestly can't comment on "how good" or otherwise UTV are compared to Vodafone for VDSL. They are a new entrant in this market. Competition is good. If their product is rubbish word will go around and they'll be forced to improve it or leave the market.

    My main socket is in the hall, so I guess I have to order power adapters...
    I found nice ones on Ebay with 3 Ethernet ports, this way I can connect my main computer + my 2 satellite Linux boxes...

    5ms in worst case, I believe.
    These are my results with power adapter and ADSL2, my line is only capable of 15Mbps.
    Pinging my 2 routers, highest ping goes to router behind homeplug.

The exact digit for monthly cap is just a random round number that is driving customers away or forcing them to pay extra.

    Google fibre is still $120 per month with TV - good deal but not free by any means.

    Plus it is very very limited in terms of availability.

    We've seen how proper competition works, UPC, Smart and Magnet use their own infrastructure. Guess what, it only ever reaches large urban areas which are easy to upgrade.

    If the state were to mandate population coverage to all providers private players wouldnt get into the irish market, and if we dont they wont ever reach "proper" coverage.

    Yeah, the coverage is very limiting factor. Smart is now owned by Digiweb, but luckily they still provide quality service they are known for, also no package deals - just the best available for the same very competitive price. €30 for 24Mbps and 350GB cap that can be easily reset by asking them nicely (Got mine reset yesterday). This brings to the point where cap is just a virtual thing - like an insurance for ISPs, just in case...

    Just off the phone from a Vodafone rep who was trying to convince me that an engineer would have to come out to the house to run new fibre optic cables from the efibre cabinet to my house ...which is 800 yards away .:eek: Crazy fellow.

    After a lengthy discussion I managed to convince him that all I needed was a new phone socket and modem so he checked with his superior who confirmed this .
    I wonder how other many people he has booked in for rewiring :D

    He said its 40 euro connection fee and 29.99 for the modem on a 12 month contract or free for a 24 month contract.Is that correct ?

    I actually changed my bundle in June and entered a 12 month contract and was told at the time by 2 different reps that I wouldnt have to pay any extra charges when upgrading to efibre down the line irrespective of contract length .:mad:

    Ordered Vodafone 2 weeks ago trough website, they called me back shortly after. Took my DD details and promised me mountains of gold and that my house is already enabled.
    Today I called them back to see what's going on, they said house will be enabled next month and I need to call them 14th of November, give them UAN number of current provider, after that it will take another 25 days for installation.

    So instead, I went with Digiweb, 350GB cap and 18mnth contract sucks, but at least I am getting fibre installed much sooner, they were very nice to move me to the top of the queue as close as possible to that date. €49 one off installation and €60 one-off for Static IP if requested after installation, they don't have anything against running apache webserver, so I'm good. They are also able to reset the cap on request, but I would love to have some sort of addon to the service that could increase or remove the cap.

    Got Vodafone installed on Friday and I'm very happy with it so far.

    Install was nice and quick , about an hour total inclusive of the 30 minutes he was at the cab.

    Sorry to drag up an old thread but I told some people on here I would let them know how I got on with a vodafone installation. Vodafone are paying eircom to install a line to my house..

    Ordered last September, nothing happened for 6 weeks.
    Was called by vodafone and offered same deal! They lost the original order. Put in new order at end of October.

    December 2 eircom guys called for a site survey and one guy rang me on phone.
    Was told I would need to put a pipe with a rope in it to bring the line from the road to the house.
    I did this the week after Christmas. ( Digger, the works..)
    Rang the eircom guy..no answer. 2 weeks later he rings back to tell me that he has transferred to Waterford and the other two gents retired..

    Rang vodafone..I would be contacted shortly..

    Anyway, a contracting crowd rang to say that they would be out to do the site survey.
    Take day off work..no show...

    Got a text to say that they would reschedule..
    Contractor arrives and does survey..

    Got another text..this is looking hopeful..
    Contractor arrives and attempts to do a second survey...Leaves when he knows that his mentor was here earlier..

    Got a text making another appointment for installation
    Rang vodafone and they said that the next visit should be installation..

    Took day off work...no show...

    Over 6 months since initial contact...It is like being in an abusive relationship but no one comes home...

    Vodafone completely and utterly messed up my installation as well, but I have put it down to our rep being useless, as he has let us down on a few things.

    Once installed it has been superb.

    I would recommend in general going with Eircom or Vodafone for vdsl. Stay away from the rest.

    Just checked my number with eircom, seems we will be hooked up next month. also says the best we can expect is 15mb down. please say this is not the fiber speed.......

    i can see the cabinet from my house 50m max.

    adsl was quoting up to 24mb but struggling to get over 2mb at peak times

    adsl was quoting up to 24mb but struggling to get over 2mb at peak times


    You may be on a different cab if its prequalling that low. That or your line has a problem of some sort.

    The eircom website actually tells you what speed you can get. Click on check availability and enter your phone number: https://www.eircom.net/broadband/productDetails?id=bu_23

    When that's done, click on "Discover the maximum speed you will experience in your home".
