I think a lot of women find themselves very drawn to "odd one out" kind of guys. Like because they're not conventionally (or particularly) attractive, they have more mystery, or something. Or because they're specifically unattractive their uniqueness has some form of appeal.
Daniel Craig is probably a good example of this. Face-wise, he's a complete troll.

Men would probably be the same in many regards. There would be some frankly ugly looking women who get some men properly riled up. Fairuza Balk is one example off the top of my head.

I have a mate who would not be the most attractive of people. Yet he has had more women come up to him randomly and lob the gob on him than most people I know. Granted, we frequented some pretty "alternative" bars in our time, but even so. Once our Clooney-esque lothario mate was chatting up a real stunner for about twenty minutes. When she got bored, she turned to our Daniel Craig, gave him a big dirty snog and walked out.
Delighted with himself that night.
