There is no "anti binge-drinking legislation". What there is is "anti getting-a-fancy-for-a-nice-Chablis-about-10:15-or-so-and-popping-down-the-offie-in-the-car-legislation"!

Anything restricting the sale of alcohol in this country is effectively binge-drinking.

Anyway, I've never been put out by off-licence opening hours. Who goes shopping or doesn't know what they're doing for the night after 10pm?

And don't forget the good old nct

I've met a lot of stupid people who really do need to be protected from themselves.

No matter how hard you try, you just can't fix stupid

With talks about Ireland introducing a sugar tax, do you think that we are going a bit far with this whole nanny state crap. The following sums us up really.

Ridiculously early closing times for pubs.
Trying to ban drinks advertising in sports.
    Plain packaged fags
Talks about trying to ban people from smoking in their own private cars (absolute rubbish)
can't buy drink in a shop after 10 o'clock (why I'm an adult for feck sake)
Not to forget we invented the the original smoking ban.

Whats next ban bookies and horse and greyhound racing because there cruel to animals. oh and ban boxing and rugby and hurling because there a bit rough and barbaric and actually lets just ban the craic altogether and all go to work by day and for a run around the leafy suburbs or the gym in evenings like good little citizens.

    Everything in moderation I say.:)

I agree with you on the other points, but ask anyone involved with greyhound rescue about the cruelty inflicted on greyhounds when they're no longer useful to the owners and you might change your mind as to whether or not it should be banned.

I guess you've never been on the way home from a horrible late shift and fancied a glass of wine?

Granted it's not the biggest issue but to me it's a good example of nannyism.
Same as not being to buy alcohol before 12.30 on a sunday, or, lets be honest : untill after mass

I personally couldn't give a toss what off-licenses do, I rarely use them. My beef is that these silly, petty restrictions that have no effect whatsoever on the problems they're supposed to be helping to solve inconvenience ordinary, decent folk. And I would rather not start planning my evenings around the whims and notions of whatever shower of window-licking head-cases are occupying Leinster House at any particular time just yet, thank you.

And you know what.... the country is not falling apart or full of raging red eyed alcoholics. Last time I looked, Germany was actually doing ok for itself.

It's time Ireland followed the approach of the Mutterland.
But we can't do that because all Irish people are addicts and bastards.

All this tax bollox is the dying throes of the last generation. When they all die/go senile the country can finally move into the modern world.

Does any other country have a national day in honour of a drinks company?

Yeah thats fair enough. The treatment of the dogs after retirement needs to be monitored alright, but surely the racing itself is bad.

Ok this **** comes up every so often, which I agree 100% with, but it just ends up in a massive bitching session with nothing done about it.

This is our county's biggest problem, we bitch and moan, but when it comes down to sorting it out, we do **** all about it and happily bend over to continue taking it. I'd like something to be done about these things, like keeping clubs open, being able to buy drink at anytime, killing off the Good Friday ****e, but I don't know how to get about doing it. I'm sure if even half the people who oppose the stupid restricts got together to do something about it things might progress. It ****ing beats this same old **** of whining on the internet without any intention of doing something substantial about it.

I think you'll find the original nation wide smoking ban was "invented" in the Taliban governed Afghanistan of the 1990's. Just so as you know where the Irish government get their ideas from, that's all.

The strides taken by anti-drink campaigners to ban drink companies sponsoring sport really get on my tits. It seems to focus it's attention entirely on the GAA and turn a blind eye on rugby, a sport which has as it's most popular club tournament the HEINEKEN CUP, and which has a very strong drinking culture (certainely un comparison to rival sports).

Ah no, a bad sparky might burn a house down, you wouldn't know like. As for the driving instructors, you had lads straight out of prison slapping a sign on the roof and driving off with young wans. Some regulation was badly needed there.

I wholeheartedly agree. But as they were at it they made it mainly about tax.

Yeah, what were they thinking banning smoking. Sure whats wrong with making non smokers and kids inhale fumes for a few hours in a public place! Never did anyone any harm!

Ah Id leave flat racing alone but yeah ban the grand national and others like it. We really should be able to enjoy ourselves without having to watch horses be put down on front of us.
I like boxing but Id consider mandatory headgear for professionals. Pro rugby should bring in some form of height, weight restrictions and change scrummaging rules to make the game safer, hurling is probably ok. Probably.

Nothing like a run around a leafy suburb. Good clean harmless fun. :)

The nanny state (done right) is a force for good. People need to be protected from their own astonishing stupidity, even if they don't like it.

    Ireland has it backways.

Here in ]Germany ]the bars can stay open all night, you can get a 6 pack of beer for in the shop at any time for under €3, you can smoke in the bars, they have vending machines on nearly every street corner selling cigarettes and a pack costs less than €5.

And you know what.... the country is not falling apart or full of raging red eyed alcoholics. Last time I looked, Germany was actually doing ok for itself.

It's time Ireland followed the approach of the Mutterland.

But, but I thought it was all due to Laws brought in by the EU

No problem with people having fun. As long as they do so in a safe and orderly manner consistent with best practice. ;)
