With talks about Ireland introducing a sugar tax, do you think that we are going a bit far with this whole nanny state crap. The following sums us up really.

Ridiculously early closing times for pubs.
Trying to ban drinks advertising in sports.
    Plain packaged fags
Talks about trying to ban people from smoking in their own private cars (absolute rubbish)
can't buy drink in a shop after 10 o'clock (why I'm an adult for feck sake)
Not to forget we invented the the original smoking ban.

Whats next ban bookies and horse and greyhound racing because there cruel to animals. oh and ban boxing and rugby and hurling because there a bit rough and barbaric and actually lets just ban the craic altogether and all go to work by day and for a run around the leafy suburbs or the gym in evenings like good little citizens.

    Everything in moderation I say.:)

My thoughts exactly. Ireland's slide into the nanny state is completely out of control.

I agree OP, I'd like to see less intervention from the state but it ain't happening. The older conservatives are well organised in this country. If they're not ringing Joe Duffy then they are circling wagons at the local tidy town meeting.
Give it twenty years and we might see some change.

Banning smoking in the car? Yeah try enforcing that one.
Plain fag packets - I see that one as a positive in disguise - it means theres a chance to A: bring cigarette cases back - they are fierce swave looking imo, and B:oppertunity for people to draw their own logos on blank fag boxes - endless fun! :pac:

As for the rest I agree with you. Im fit as f*ck from jogging those leafy suberbs but I'm fairly boring :(

Nope I play 5 different sports, dont smoke and only drink it weekends. But it is not the job of government to be telling people what to do in their private cars etc.

And what about the carbon tax.
Is the money raised spent on reducing our carbon footprint and if so how?

As the ruling elite self promoting politicians take stick for their various multiple shortcomings, they muddy the waters by bringing in these laws/bans by stealth. And unfortunately, they generally get away with it. :(

I'm not a fag either so I'm in favour of that too. Believe me, it's a good thing that the poo poo community is kept quiet, because otherwise they'd be the biggest attention seekers in Ireland

Us Irish! I mean we're getting so dry arsed now that the following are definitely not the done thing anymore:
    - running around on the M50 in your favorite nike
    - diving off any bridge , like the M50 bridge into the Liffey.
    - entering ur own fido in a dogfight for a wager

    we've become so bland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭Stojkovic

You cant shoot cats anymore FFS.

Uses to bag meself 3 or 4 every weekend.

    Have to buy dogfood now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,959 ✭✭✭gugleguy

A lot of it has to do with the decline of the mingin' way of Irish treating each other. A lot more American customs have come in - leaving tips. The finger licken' friendly sweet apple pie attitude. Being sarcastic about it makes you the loser. ðŸ˜

Yeah, and what a total disaster that turned out to be, eh?

I dread to think what life will be like for smokers when their packets of cigarettes aren't adorned with logos and branding. And when a ban on drinks advertising is implemented, how will drinkers cope with not seeing alcohol branding at sports events?

    Ireland has it backways.

Here in Germany the bars can stay open all night, you can get a 6 pack of beer for in the shop at any time for under €3, you can smoke in the bars, they have vending machines on nearly every street corner selling cigarettes and a pack costs less than €5.

And you know what.... the country is not falling apart or full of raging red eyed alcoholics. Last time I looked, Germany was actually doing ok for itself.

It's time Ireland followed the approach of the Mutterland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,207 ✭✭✭The King of Moo

They'll be banning populist hyperbole next Joe.

I agree though, this Middle-Eastern theocracy we live in is very restrictive. I mean, women can't leave the house without their brother or father, and you can't buy alcohol or go to the cinema!

I don't really mind anti-smoking and anti binge-drinking legislation. I've met a lot of stupid people who really do need to be protected from themselves.

...anti binge-drinking legislation. I've met a lot of stupid people who really do need to be protected from themselves.

There is no "anti binge-drinking legislation". What there is is "anti getting-a-fancy-for-a-nice-Chablis-about-10:15-or-so-and-popping-down-the-offie-in-the-car-legislation"!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 341 ✭✭Shout Dust

Some of its good, some ridiculous. Smoking ban was a great idea, wouldn't be totally against a sugar tax either. But the opening times for pubs are ridiculous, and even worse for off licences. Drugs should be legal here too so long as you're not harming anyone. But this country goes over the top when it comes to drugs, even simple things like Melatonin or 5-htp are banned here, but you can buy them in Holland & Barrett in the north.

THAT'S IT! If we remove our stupid laws, this will remove all the raging red-eyed alcoholics from our streets! No more puking in the street!

Next, we'll cure cancer by removing all the stupid smoking restrictions!

    Yay :D!!

Anything restricting the sale of alcohol in this country is effectively binge-drinking.

Anyway, I've never been put out by off-licence opening hours. Who goes shopping or doesn't know what they're doing for the night after 10pm?

I guess you've never been on the way home from a horrible late shift and fancied a glass of wine?

Granted it's not the biggest issue but to me it's a good example of nannyism.
Same as not being to buy alcohol before 12.30 on a sunday, or, lets be honest : untill after mass

I personally couldn't give a toss what off-licenses do, I rarely use them. My beef is that these silly, petty restrictions that have no effect whatsoever on the problems they're supposed to be helping to solve inconvenience ordinary, decent folk. And I would rather not start planning my evenings around the whims and notions of whatever shower of window-licking head-cases are occupying Leinster House at any particular time just yet, thank you.

But we can't do that because all Irish people are addicts and bastards.

All this tax bollox is the dying throes of the last generation. When they all die/go senile the country can finally move into the modern world.

Yeah thats fair enough. The treatment of the dogs after retirement needs to be monitored alright, but surely the racing itself is bad.

Ok this **** comes up every so often, which I agree 100% with, but it just ends up in a massive bitching session with nothing done about it.

This is our county's biggest problem, we bitch and moan, but when it comes down to sorting it out, we do **** all about it and happily bend over to continue taking it. I'd like something to be done about these things, like keeping clubs open, being able to buy drink at anytime, killing off the Good Friday ****e, but I don't know how to get about doing it. I'm sure if even half the people who oppose the stupid restricts got together to do something about it things might progress. It ****ing beats this same old **** of whining on the internet without any intention of doing something substantial about it.

I think you'll find the original nation wide smoking ban was "invented" in the Taliban governed Afghanistan of the 1990's. Just so as you know where the Irish government get their ideas from, that's all.

The strides taken by anti-drink campaigners to ban drink companies sponsoring sport really get on my tits. It seems to focus it's attention entirely on the GAA and turn a blind eye on rugby, a sport which has as it's most popular club tournament the HEINEKEN CUP, and which has a very strong drinking culture (certainely un comparison to rival sports).

Ah no, a bad sparky might burn a house down, you wouldn't know like. As for the driving instructors, you had lads straight out of prison slapping a sign on the roof and driving off with young wans. Some regulation was badly needed there.
