    Travellers probably wouldn't want to join such a club in my opinion and even if they did, they'd still race on the roads as there is a massive gambling and pride culture around sulky racing.

    Martin Collins from Pavee Point was on the Last Word last week. Even he admitted that they don't recognise this as part of the traveller culture. It has only appeared in the last 40 to 50 years, as we tended not to have roads that stood up to horse and cart racing at high speed.

    It's cruel and barbaric.

    Like I said in the closed thread, how long before a human life is lost? Suppose a child was sitting in the back of that car? Or someone happened to be putting something in the boot?

    No doubt the powers that be will take action then, a classic case of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted, pardon the pun.

    Don't play dumb. It's not racist to mention someone who is a Traveller in a negative manner. It is racist to blame or generalise about Travellers as a group based on the the actions of one or two in a specific case.

    What I meant was "pride culture", as in families compete with each other over who has the best racers and the best horses etc. I didn't mean to say that this carry on was synonymous with Traveller culture per se.

    access to pubs is the biggest problem for Travellers, and a total of 215 of the 309 cases relate to this issue,

    The more recent way pubs have had around this is to simply close the pub when a traveller wedding or funeral rolls into town.

    In what way are travellers a race?
    They are white Irish and white Europeans. As much a race as people from Achill or apartment dwellers.
    Would it be possible for an explanation as to their racial status before more bans are handed out?

    Oh yeah EDIT- I get the bans and warnings for the tone of some posts but Im not sure if calling them racist postings is technically fair.

    The thing I don't like is how the likes of Big Fat Gypsy wedding etc. glamourise them.Notice how 90% of the men in those shows stay out of the way or have their faces blurred out when in shot.

    TV3's most recent stuff did try to scratch the surface of what really goes on & they found threats,silence & secrecy as they followed a trail of people having been scammed all over the world by traveller "workers".

    i wonder are other countries equivilent to Travellers ie Gypsies etc protected and feared as much as some in Ireland. Here, they seem to think they can do what they want because they are travellers and there is rarely any repercussions... I see some in the town i work in and some of them are lovely and we have done work for severals of them (house fitting out etc) but whilst in one house the kids from a neighbouring house were out scouring the vans and vehicles tryin to rob tools materials. We were half afraid of them and they only 6 or 7 years old. and couldnt say a thing or the parents be out giving abuse. Im all for giving people respect but only where its due. Sickening to think they can get away with what they did to a poor horse. and they prob had plenty of money to treat the horse at a vets if they had any heart at all!!

    The race or otherwise of Travellers is completely academic. Would you feel better if we all agreed to call it bigotry instead?

    Nobody's getting banned from threads for comments like yours. They get banned for saying they are all filthy scum who should be killed. There's a big difference.

    Travellers don't portray themselves as a separate "race", rather a separate ethnicity. An ethnicity is a people with shared history, language, heritage, customs and an identity which they view as distinct from others. For instance Russians in Latvia may be Latvian citizens, and also white Europeans, but also a different ethnicity.

    Those Sulkys always worry me , when I am driving I am really wary of them

    I would lay odds there is no insurance involved , so if you had an accident with one god only knows what would happen ( I can guess ).

    Really they should be banned from the roads , but I can't see it happening .

    If we're going to have a moratorium - under pain of banning - on highlighting any kind of persistent, generational anti-social behaviour amongst certain sections of working class Irish people for fear of making blanket assumptions about a community, I assume there will be similar mass banning the next time one of those multi-page scumbag threads is opened in AH and students/middle-class types are all lining up to outdo themselves with blanket condemnations, violence porn and snide generalisations?
