I pay the licence fee and I would give credit where it's due but there's really not that much on.Apart from the odd news bulletin I seldom watch it.

Cannot get over how bad a host Ryan Tubridy is.

I have a theory that the late late was never as good as they say it was, just back in the day there was no choice.

Gay was supposed to have been some television genius. One of the highlights of his late late career was giving the girlfriend of a bishop a hard time while calling the bishop a good man, after she had had his child. And something something answer about a woman wearing nothing on her wedding night which caused a scandal, after being asked the loaded question in a competition.

Also remember they gave Boyzone a slot on the show, even though they hadn't recorded a song at that point.

The quality of programming is poor, very poor.

When they have supposedly hard hitting programme,s. They never following through incase someone,s feelings are hurt.

Rte can no longer justify there existence.

There is one great thing about rte, I forgot to mention. They have the best meteorologist,s working for them in the world.

    Are they though?

Just cos they have been around fot 5-6 decades does not equal a quality product.

If I need weather I dont go to Met Eireann.

The most exciting guests are the wives used to fill up space with the real guests who I have never heard of.

All in favour of it if it means the fee doesn't increase.
You're suggesting the spongers have brought it upon themselves by not paying the license?

As a sponger, I'm suggesting the government has no business forcing me to pay for your entertainment.

I don't own a TV, because of the b.s. license. But if I had one, I wouldn't watch RTE. I wouldn't watch broadcast television. I play video games, watch DVDs, stream Netflix, and watch US television shows on US websites where they stream them.

The TV license is a horrible value. Given the choice, lots of people would find better ways to spend their 160 euro per year.

Now they are fighting to change the law so that people like me, who have no TV and no desire to watch RTE and the likes will also be forced to pay the license. There is no justification for this, they just want more money. And your happy to go along with it, as long as it isn't your money?

Without a TV - the only way I can consume RTE content is because they are giving it away online. A better solution would be to restrict access to people who register. You know, like customers. EVERYONE in the world doesn't need to pay Netflix because they *COULD* watch Netflix online......instead, Netflix only lets people who pay access the content.

    It's a tax for a community service.
You have to think of it in the whole
and feel glad you're contributing to the community.

RTE gets away with it because they can, ever watch pat kenny and sit there thinking well hey this guy deserves 900k per year...I can tell you i didn't once think that and im sure plenty of other people didn't either..

I'll tell you why they can get away with it,because they are safe in the knowledge we are bullied into paying a TV license for sub-standard television programming.(Thank you, so-fat-you-cant-see-your-own-willy pat rabbitte)

Look at the repeats of CSI miami and reeling in the years, etc. It is clear the money that goes into RTE doesn't come out in their programming choices,it goes directly into the likes of tubridy and marian 4 hours finuncane's pocket..

If it were a tax for a community service....

1.) It wouldn't be tied to ownership of a television
2.) It would be proportional to one's ability to pay

#2 is the real kicker though. See, they're upset that some 20% of the population isn't paying the TV license, so they are moving it to a 'household' charge. That completely ignores the fact that one in five households in Ireland are unemployed.

This might have been about providing a useful community service - years back. But now it's about rich people fighting to keep their financial interests secured. It's about money, plain and simple. Rich people who have a lot of it, want to make sure they keep getting it.

RTE saw a huge increase in revenue during the tiger and is doing everything in it's power to keep revenue at those levels. RTE, even at the height of the boom, couldn't compete on merit against mediocre US cable TV. I don't understand how or why some poor guy on the dole or working for minimum wage should be *forced* to pay 160 euro per year, to support some rich executive in a suit who is tasked with ensuring a steady production of crap, who makes six figures. Or actors and actresses who'd be no-name c-list celebs outside of Ireland pull down the same.

I'd agree most of it is crap, both radio and TV.However given the size of the Irish market if we were to rely totally on commercial broadcasters the quality of the service would be very poor indeed.

True that. As bad as RTE can be, it's nothing compared to CCTV in the good ol' People's Republic of China. They largely have the bottom on what people get to watch here.

I miss Prime Time, Reeling in the Years, the news... but The Late Late has been a sham for the last few years. A combination of a bland host who is a personality-free zone and the z-lister dregs of D4 has been a sure-fire recipe for disaster. The closest I come to watching it is going to the RTE Player and reading who the guests are and then I move on. Has been nothing of interest for about 4 years now.

Irish oriented programs on radio and TV.

As unpatriotic as this sounds, I stopped watching Irish telly about five years ago.

Old-fashioned weather reporting, cringey news reporters, lame day-time shows and embarrassing guests on the Late Late Show.

I said it before and I'll say it again, we don't have celebs in Ireland.

Last week I switched over to see what was on and it was the usual ****e.
    I'm not missing anything.

Like home and away, big bang theory, joe duffy and the late late show? Im not seeing how it being "irish orientated" means that everyone should pay for it. Ill stick to netflix, it makes suggestions me orientated, not irish orientated.
