One would think they can't act autonomously from the IRFU?

I think unbelievable pressure will be brought to bear.
Can you imagine any Irish province going ahead in a competition that involves them and the Italians?

Did Mick Dawson, the Leinster CEO, say or imply last week that if there was a new competition that he wanted Leinster in it?

It's a realistic wish as his remit is to Leinster rugby.

He said something along the lines that if there was a new competition they'd have to find a way to get into it. Maybe that wasn't exactly it.

The IRFU call the shots though

The IRFU won't stand by, against the wishes of Leinster and Munster, and let a new competition happen without Irish provinces. Being left out in the cold would just see all good Irish players all wanting to play in England and France

If the English and French unions back this (and IMO there is zero chance of the RFU going against their own clubs) then the new competition will happen. The IRB are unlikely too kill something that has the support of English and French, no matter what they might say now. So seems like its down to the French.

And the best response the ERC have is to have a meeting in a month? Laughable tbh

Does this mean that all of the new HC matches will be on BT for free?

Not likely. The free BT deal is only for this year I think

A competition founded on the values of equality and fairness looking to move into new European markets. What a truly awful thing.
so erc is as much as dead in the water and no mediator is gonna help em if todays announcement goes forward

The FFR refusing to support their clubs now

Looks like it. They called the announcement irrelevant and said they're committed to the ERC. It'll be interesting to see where that goes. Might see them make some gains in player availability etc.

Also McCafferty was talking today, said the new organising body would be like the ERC but not as large and unwieldy

He also spoke about the TV deal and said the RFU have seen it. As if that excuses them hiding the info in it from everyone else!

    Yes just saw that

    http://www.ffr.fr/index.php/ffr/historique/2013/coupe_d_europe_mise_au_point_de_la_ffr

So looks as if PRL have jumped the gun with their announcement

They have also burnt their bridges as McCafferty said there is no point in talking to the mediator "We have discharged our obligations, we have said all along we will not be in an ERC run competition after this season"

Who will now play in the "Rugby Champions Cup"

There's a good chance though that this is just the FFR trying to force some concessions from the club owners in respect of domestic arrangements in France.

Also noted that, but he does not say when the RFU saw the details, could have been yesterday or the day before, but it certainly was months after it was signed

I'm sure it was before they came out to say it was ok.

    Could be.
FFR are also quite happy to go to mediation as agreed by board members at the last meeting unlike one of the parties who have reneged:(

    Reneged in what way?

They should all go to mediation. I think PR and LNR will both send representatives to mediation. Id be surprised if they didn't.

It must have been before the RFU gave tacit approval to the Anglo/French/plus invitees tournament. The RFU would have been totally inept to do it before seeing the financials.

But as I said it was probably nearer a week ago (ie a year after PRL signed the deal) than last May as the RFU were still not in possession of the information then;)

In this way, report in the press today McCafferty reaction to his appointment indicated that the English clubs see no point in talking to Mew

Have the RFU said they weren't in possession of the information?

If the ERC were serious about this they wouldnt be dicking about & waiting until next month to have a meeting.
They are hoping the national RFU's put their collective feet down & stop them having to actually make a decision.

I have said they are now privy to the details of the BT contract

The RFU investigated the deal internally right after it was signed, didn't they?

As you already know the answer to that question why are you posing it?

Well you're saying you don't think it's likely they saw the details until last week. I'd say it's likely they saw the details far earlier than that.

You are quote fond of misquoting people re-read my post

Where have I said the RFU were not party to the details of the BT Deal until last week. It was sometime between May and last week. I specifically did not put a date in, but it was a long time after the deal was signed (September 2012) that PRL divulged the details to the board they are legally bound to.

Why are the ERC taking a month to organise a meeting...??

Not likely. The free BT deal is only for this year I think

If you mean the free to UK customers, then that's permanent as long as said customer keeps their BT Vision/broadband...

I do not know when they saw it, but I do know that the RFU had not seen the BT deal by 30th of April

Edited to change May to 30th of April as it may have been anytime post 1st of May which is correct (ie at least 231 days) between PRL signing a contract and letting their Union details of said contract
