I think nobody can say for sure because the full details of the BT deal weren't released. I think there was talk of a 'get of of Europe and focus on the domestic league' clause.

I can speak teh legalz speak.

Never heard of the rugby show. Robert Kitson was very good on it.

The Prime Time piece was ridiculous, a shame they couldn't have given a more balanced take on things.

Ah yeah, like the Amlin Challenge Cup or the Heineken Cup?

The Heineken European Cup doesn't have the same ring to it does it?

No it doesn't. And they pay good money for a name that sounds good. I'd be very surprised if the naming rights for the new competition weren't sold as well actually.

well they don't have sponsorship yet. They picked that name which is why it's interesting that Europe isn't mentioned

I suppose there's the potential of non-European sides joining in future years. But also it may just be two nations, so not very European.

A Premiership Rugby statement said: "The competition will be based on the principles of qualification on merit."Premier Rugby added the new tournament will have "a strong competition format, equality between the leagues, higher commercial values for the teams and expansion into new European markets".

A statement concluded: "The Top 14 and Premiership Rugby clubs have already confirmed their participation in the new competition and a joint working group has been created to prepare all necessary elements in good time for the 2014-15 season."

A competition founded on the values of equality and fairness looking to move into new European markets. What a truly awful thing.

I can see this blowing up big time. Come next season, there won't be a HC.
Can't see sky paying for the Pro 12 league and the...err.......Pro 12 league knockout competition.

Well the new competition hasn't been approved by the RFU and FFR yet. So it may not come into being. If it eventually exists, I very much doubt it will just be English and French sides in it.

I think what Premiership Rugby and LNR will be doing between now and October 23rd will be trying to keep releasing info about this new tournament. Then they will come out with the whole "we organised a whole tournament in the time it took you to organise one meeting."

I think its coming to a stage where the clubs will just tell the associations to go & jump.
You will have the clubs running their own competitions & the rugby unions in charge of internationals only.

It won't happen without Union backing. There are a lot of things they are reliant on the Unions for. But the Unions are supporting them quite a bit. Ian Ritchie seemingly wasn't impressed by the long wait before the next ERC meeting.

Things like referees, ground availability, elite squad payments etc. are dependent on RFU backing for the Premiership clubs. I'd be very surprised if they went ahead without the RFU. I'd be a little surprised if they had to though.

Personally I'm happy. At the end of the day, the changes that are needed to be made are going to be made. Whether that's in this new competition or its in the H Cup, it's going to happen. And that's all I wanted.

Well you have lapped up everything the EPL have said to date.
    Therefore no suprise.

Lots of speculation surrounding plenty of unresolved issues there. I wish I shared your optimism

I already have. So you have nothing to add to it, you just felt the need to criticise me? Good stuff.

Well I'm confident we'll get reform on qualification and competition structure. Because now the IRFU are coming out saying they're willing to move on that. So even if we remain within the H Cup I think we'll see improvement. So I'm happy with that.

Quentin Smith on 5 Live said the name of the competition was a case of finding something that wasn't registered by someone else already...

He also said there's strong interest from Unions from within the Pro 12. Which you'd have to assume are not the IRFU.

Didn't hear it myself, just reading BBC

I can't see the likes of Leinster & Munster sitting idly by as the new tourney involves the English, French, possibly the Welsh & maybe the Scots too.
The IRFU would be seen as Nero fiddling as Rome burned.
If the IRFU don't get onboard quickly, you will see the provinces asking why, and then pushing ahead if the IRFU continue to stall

Did Mick Dawson, the Leinster CEO, say or imply last week that if there was a new competition that he wanted Leinster in it?

It's a realistic wish as his remit is to Leinster rugby.

, and then pushing ahead if the IRFU continue to stall

One would think they can't act autonomously from the IRFU?
