Bought one of them 1999 'bug eye' corolla's for 100 euro today lads.. No nct but a nice little car I have so say, Interior is like new.

What would I get for her with no nct? And there is a dent in the back wing but other than that shes grand..

Will it take much to test her?

that's pretty much it. they're no e-class or saab 9-5, more the simple mans bangernomics :pac:

if its a clean car (dent aside) you could probably stick it on donedeal asking 6 or 700 if its very fresh. you'll easily get offers over 500. sure you'd scrap it for more than what you paid ffs... there's good money in exporting anything powered by that 4e-fe engine!

The lad said he was happy with 50 euro but, I am a friend of the family so I said fair is fair and handed him the 100. Still a little bargain, He said he got a whole new exhaust (including new cat) but the car still keeps failing on the emissions. I reckon it needs a good drive and probably a service??

It has a dent on the back door and someone rear ended him so the boot is a bit damaged. I reckon ill just get the hammer to it tomorrow :p

valve stem seals can be a problem on poorly maintained 4e's. excessive oil burning might be the cause of you failure... could be something handy too though. seeing as it was so cheap i wouldn't be afraid to spend a small bit putting it right. you'd see €900 -1k with a new NCT test and the bodywork looking half presentable, handy money.

With the new exhaust and that it'd be a shame to just scrap it. I might sell the focus and keep it for myself, If it's anyway decent:) Might throw it into the nct for the laugh..

you're right. the bug eye interior is a much nicer place to be than the e10. you'd probably get a rough bug eye for €100 on top of the asking price of the e10 i posted.

i just love them, i remember dad had one years ago when i was around 10 or 11 and i'd spend all day hoovering and waxing it, simpler times :)
not only that but the bug eye model is safer than the e10 also with most if not all e11s benefiting from two airbags and from 99 abs as standard as well. :)

Only in Ireland that a '99 bug eye Corolla is a desirable car lads :p

I know it's as totally reliable as the old early 90s model! And for sure there's something to say for very, very basic cars that will start and will go from A to B :)
I know they are bland and basic and all that but it's the way they are built is what I admire about them. Every mechanical component in them is of very high quality and is very well designed. The Toyota equivalent of today is a pale shadow of these.

it's not not idling high when it's warm and idling low when it's cold by any chance?

And other cars aren't well designed or well engineered? Where is this statement from? Who told you this? Have you links to forums/independant tests? Did you take one apart and note down every part, right down to cable ties and split pins?

Maybe you can answer this for me seeig as you like the aul bugeyed corollas: why is the liftback so sought after? Its easily the most hateful looking one out of the saloon, hatch and estate. You'd imagine people would either like the quieter booted version (with a decent boot size for what it is), young fellas with hatches or the practically of the estate. Some sense in any of those!

But no, they all seem to go for the most horrible looking version which looks like putting a shapeless dress on a slob. They look so wrong on so many levels, I can't see what has people drawn to such an ugly disproportionate car

This is just a personal bugbear of mine, but I wish when people are taking pics of the dash/centre console, they'd take them from the back of the car and cut out having their knees in the photos.

Haha, hadn't noticed, I'll change it later!

Is that a childs seat in the back?
Id take it out and retake the photo. Makes it look cleaner.
Also do you have any receipts etc?
If so take a photo of them

Yep, it's a baby seat, I'll take your advice and retake it.

No documents with the car unfortunatel, previous owner lost everything.

Its a pity. Do you have any receipts from your time of ownership?
    Parts bought etc?

Im never really worried as to what previous owners did to the car unless its something major such as clutch or engine replaced.
I Look out for what the current owner has done. A car might have loads of service history from previous owners but not a scrap from the current one which always sets alarm bells ringing.

    Oblig banger!:D
It aint my finest example and looks like **** but if you needed a car and paid 300 happy days.

the thing is, I've only had it a few weeks, i took it as a part swap against my e39 m5 with the intention of selling it on once i got the log book (which arrived yesterday)

do you think at this price that service history is that important?

This looks nice, if a little pricey.
    6 months test

for me knowing what was done to the car is important. You can tell me that x,y and z were done, but all I can do is take your word for it.
Sub 600 I dont mind not having service history etc. as its worth taking a risk on at that price.
At 1500 theres a bit more risk so if works been done I want to see paper.

More importantly you had an M5?
    Nice!

    Feckin children!:P
That wasn't expensive ether for an m5. I don't want to say it but you'll regret selling that!:(

Its nice plus to see a snap of a some receipts and a history kept, to me it indicates a conscientious and careful owner but not the end of the world if you don't see them either.

Everybody's different but as a potential buyer the child seat in the back wouldn't bother me in the slightest. In fact I would have an automatic tendency to assume it belonged to a parent who might statistically be more careful driver than a younger single person. Bit of a moot point though seen as you only own the car a few weeks.

It's only from 99 onwards that there was more liftbacks on the road than the rest of the model lineup and it was due to them being more readily available rather than being more sought after. The reason for this is that production of the liftback version was transferred to the uk thus this model was far easier to get than the other versions which had to come all the way from Japan.

These UK models are inferior in my experience to the Japanese versions. I've seen things like alternators and starters give issues on these which is something you very rarely see going on the Japanese built versions.
