I'd say the rover would be the easiest sale post apocalyptic budget. It would be the safest choice imo.

I'd say the Rover is best avoided and I like them. Horrible leather, bland interior, 1.8K series is the worst of the lot for blowing head gaskets btw.

I'd say avoid the earlier Mercs too and the Omegas can be mega bucks to even put small things right on.

I'm not a fan of any of them. Sorry

From wikipedia page, and referring to the Rover 45 (1999–2005):
The 45 was available with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) supplied by the German manufacturer ZF Sachs AG which had previously been used in the MGF. This particular design of CVT consists of an oil-cooled laminated steel belt (with external oil cooler) running on variable pulleys. MG Rover had many CVT failures returned to the supplier. Rover's own manual gearbox factory had been retained by BMW during the sale which created MG Rover. After buying its own gearbox designs from BMW for a time MG Rover eventually sourced an alternative supplier and later Rover 25/45 models up to 1.6-litre were fitted with Ford gearboxes.
So check it has the Ford autobox.

Also, head gasket issues blah blah blah.

If I'm not mistaken it was only a manual gearbox that was supplied by Ford.

E240 is the pick of the bunch there as it's taxed till Jan 1st so no extra running costs It will be hard to sell, though you'd get a few bob for the wheels if you sold them extra. Smooth engine, 8.5 l/100km on an open road, going up to 11.5 in town so work that out for yourself.

If you're prepared to take a financial hit I'd take the Merc for a nice bit of comfy driving over a few months, it's a nicer car to climb into in the morning than the Rover or Vauxhall and seems to be the nicest of the Mercs shown. The W210 had some gremlins in the first year or two but a decent test drive will let you know if anything major is due in the next 3-4 months.

Thought of a SAAB ? 9-3 or 9-5 will get 8-9 l/100 km on an open road, both are very comfortable reliable cars with a smooth auto in my experience.

The taxed e240 is the best out of your first lot especially if it was got for less than asking price.

Does that E240 not scream taxi to anyone else?

I would be a bit worried about sludge in a Saab tbh.

Anybody remember the 1L Diesel version of these? A great car from the last recession.
Yes indeed but the cylinder head had a tendency to crack in them, especially on the turbo variants. A super economical car on fuel tough:D

They also have better road holding than the glanza imo.

Just been watching strike back and seen a 190e on it. They look pretty savage yolks in fairness it was an auto too.

Oblig bangernomics motors: some 190's, just look at the stance on the sliver yolk.

Deep dish borbets and riding at 40mm: http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-190e-nct-and-taxed/5625662

    hi

having owned a 190 (2.0) i can highly recommend them for their solid build comfort and drive. Petrol consumption is a bit high but then again i have a heavy right foot :D:D:D. apart from the w124 they are probably the last of the great built Merc's, so catch one while you can.

agree with previous comments about the 240 merc, really miss mine that i sold recently, that V6 is soooooooo smooth and while rust around the wings could be an issue the sheer driving pleasure as you waft along the roads more than makes up for it.

It's a very solid car. Built like a tank! The base model weighs 1.5 tonne, which is about the same as a much bigger base E-class / 5-series 20 years younger...

Pricey for a 23 year old banger, but it'll prob still be going in another 23 years if the mileage checks out!

    Test 10/14
    Asking €950

Other than the exhaust there's not a lot to go wrong on those cars. I'd have it at about €750.

The pictures are ****e and the car is still wet/not waxed or anything so it makes it look seriously dull.
The green looks really well when it's polished up, a mate if mine as a Gi and a GT in that colour. :D

For something with that much test that I know won't set me wrong, I'd have it.
Only issue is my insurance won't cover anything over 20 years old and I'm stuck with them for another month and a half.

Only thing Cian is i'd say that'd be robbed in seconds. You'd have to have that in you garden/garage with a chain and lock..

Yeah that's true, a good alarm can be bought and installed for €150, not exactly the banger nomics mind set but it would make it safer.
I can fit 4 cars in my garden, fortunately, so I'd definitely have space for it. :)
