Ah Karate, the ancient art of telling people who don't know how to fight, how to fight, without showing'em how to fight.

    It's just violent dancing.

    There's another kind?

Karate from my experience takes the piss, more so than other styles. It's very limited in the actions you can do, and it's all stepping forward and back, twirl, raise arm, lower arm, flick leg from hip, step back, twirl. I found it very difficult to spar with such limitations and couldn't take it seriously at all.

Other martial arts/styles of fighting, are generally go at it.

Taekwondo is also pretty ridiculous, it's more like acrobatics than anything else, you try to do one of them jumpy-swirl kicks in a real fight and you're likely to do yourself an injury.

A good way to prove the effectiveness of a martial art is to see it's prevalence in UFC. UFC fighters generally use strikes from boxing and muay tai kickboxing, standing grappling from jiu jisu/wrestling and ground fighting from brazilian jiu jitsu

Been quite a few additions of TKD techniques recently.

Crane kick knocked out Couture, three wheel kick KOs(Hunt, Rockhold and Etim). Lots of spinning techniques being used these days.

Yes, Lots of it. I would recommend to everyone to learn some, it does help.

1st dan in kenpo karate, 1st dan in ITF taekwondo. Haven't trained in either in around 5-6 years though, and would find it hard to go back to training because of my back issues.

    I know enough.

Why would you do karate? Aside from the odd exception, if there's one thing that's been proven it's that karate doesn't work. Do a different martial art, there's so many to choose from but do one with actual value.

I'd say these would be the exception rather than the norm (they're not a regular move so probably caught these people unawares), you do a twirling kick you are not facing your target for all of it so it's easy to miss (or get struck in the back).

Though I have seen some jumping-off-the-cage kicks, they're cool!

Did Kenpo until I was 15. Tore the ligaments in my knee at training and was out for a long time and never went back. Should have gone and gotten my black belt. Ah well.

I'd like to do Krav Maga, my Dad does it, it's pretty cool.

The best thing about Krav Maga is that it's all out self defense, no 'rules' whatsoever - few martial arts will teach you to kick someone in the crotch, gouge out eyes out with your thumbs, break ear-drums with cupped hand slaps etc*.....

The bad thing is that there seems to be a bit of a money racket around people going up through the grades (especially trying to get a trainer grade)

*having said that, my first Jiu Jisu sensai thought me all these dirty tricks and more

I did the Rex Kwon Do 8-week program. Only 300 dollars.

The first lesson my Dad was taught was to turn mental in the face of an attacker. Pure mental.

So if someone comes up and looks like they're going to go for you, if you can't run, first thing to do is start looking like an absolute psychopathic lunatic, spread your body wide, and start shouting "get away from me, get away from me" :pac:

    I think that's class.

My mum's cousin is a 6th and runs a school, all my brothers and I were students there at some stage. I was about to grade for Brown belt when I quit at about 12

    Edit:
    Mothers cousin is 7th Dan.

    That's Eddie Murphy's idea....

There's a movie called 'enough' with Jennifer Lopez in it. It's one of the single worst movies ever made.

Off she goes and learns Krav Maga in a month and is able to beat the living sh*t out of everyone in the world. I wanna be able to do that. And look like her whilst doing it.

You haven't tried Kyokushin Karate so..Full Contact, knockdown style

It's possible if she learnt it in a training montage

I'm not sure about Krav Maga as I've never trained it, but reading the comments here I'd be very dubious.

A martial art needs to have some live sparring aspect to actually get you used to a resisting opponent, adrenaline, etc... BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing all have this.

I did karate for a few years, yes, not to a high level but I really enjoyed it. Did two different forms.
