Do you know Karate?

Or any other martial art for that matter? The mother enrolled me as a nipper in a karate class - 2 weeks later one of the lads I was sparring with (we must have been all of 12 at the time) jumped the gun a bit and kicked one of my last remaining milk-teeth out. And so ended my illustrious fighting career. Did a bit of boxing as a teenager but mostly for fitness more than anything else.

So what about you fine citizens of AH? Could any of ye pull the still-beating heart from the chest of an uppity scumbag, or would ye be calling Chuck Norris to do your fighting for you?

I did a few years of modified ju jitsu/self-defence. Got me out of one dodgy situation! :)

I had my first experience of capoeira this evening. Still a bit dizzy now...

Trained for a good few years in TKD but quit it a few years ago due to personal problems. I would love to get back training again but to be honest it just seems like too much effort at the moment.

Karate looks cool but too technical for me. Knowing my luck I'd break every bone in my body doing one move.

I had a few lessons when I was about fourteen but it wasn't for me. I was being bullied in school and wanted to learn how to defend myself but there was too much nonsense involved. It really turned me off when the instructor shouted at me "next time you come in here bow to me".

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is my fighting style of choice and I do classes twice a week and practice most days a bit too.

Also do Capoeira which is a martial arts dance form. You would not use it on a dance floor though without hurting everyone except yourself. And you would not use it in a fight or you would hurt only yourself.

But it is good for fitness - endurance - flexibility - and as party entertainment.

I've done a few. Some only a few weeks, others for years. The two favourites were Savate and Aikido.
I'm very rusty now though, probably couldn't judo chop my way out of a paper bag.

I have several years training in mixed martial arts (Jiu-Jitsu, Kick-boxing, Krav Maga etc..). I don't think overly much of Karate and Taekwondo, I knew a few people with black belts in those disciplines and they'd be hard pressed to fight their way out of a wet paper bag

For the thread that's in it...

I did it for a year or so as a 10 year old but it was boring. Lots of stretching and punching and kicking drills so I Karate kicked it into touch.

The only martial art I like is 'kung-fu' by Ash. Great song.

'Last night Jackie Chan came around
I played pool with him and we hung out
    Mr. Miagi and the X-men
Called in for a while as well'

I roundhoused kicked a guy in the head in a real fight, It was so awesome I nearly passed out from the adrenalin rush. Proper Van Dam style. Discovered this does not cause people to somersault and land in a heap.
    True story.

Ah Karate, the ancient art of telling people who don't know how to fight, how to fight, without showing'em how to fight.

    It's just violent dancing.

Karate from my experience takes the piss, more so than other styles. It's very limited in the actions you can do, and it's all stepping forward and back, twirl, raise arm, lower arm, flick leg from hip, step back, twirl. I found it very difficult to spar with such limitations and couldn't take it seriously at all.

Other martial arts/styles of fighting, are generally go at it.

Taekwondo is also pretty ridiculous, it's more like acrobatics than anything else, you try to do one of them jumpy-swirl kicks in a real fight and you're likely to do yourself an injury.

A good way to prove the effectiveness of a martial art is to see it's prevalence in UFC. UFC fighters generally use strikes from boxing and muay tai kickboxing, standing grappling from jiu jisu/wrestling and ground fighting from brazilian jiu jitsu

Been quite a few additions of TKD techniques recently.

Crane kick knocked out Couture, three wheel kick KOs(Hunt, Rockhold and Etim). Lots of spinning techniques being used these days.

1st dan in kenpo karate, 1st dan in ITF taekwondo. Haven't trained in either in around 5-6 years though, and would find it hard to go back to training because of my back issues.

Why would you do karate? Aside from the odd exception, if there's one thing that's been proven it's that karate doesn't work. Do a different martial art, there's so many to choose from but do one with actual value.

I'd say these would be the exception rather than the norm (they're not a regular move so probably caught these people unawares), you do a twirling kick you are not facing your target for all of it so it's easy to miss (or get struck in the back).

Though I have seen some jumping-off-the-cage kicks, they're cool!

Did Kenpo until I was 15. Tore the ligaments in my knee at training and was out for a long time and never went back. Should have gone and gotten my black belt. Ah well.

I'd like to do Krav Maga, my Dad does it, it's pretty cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,461 ✭✭✭--Kaiser--

I'd like to do Krav Maga, my Dad does it, it's pretty cool.

The best thing about Krav Maga is that it's all out self defense, no 'rules' whatsoever - few martial arts will teach you to kick someone in the crotch, gouge out eyes out with your thumbs, break ear-drums with cupped hand slaps etc*.....

The bad thing is that there seems to be a bit of a money racket around people going up through the grades (especially trying to get a trainer grade)

*having said that, my first Jiu Jisu sensai thought me all these dirty tricks and more

I did the Rex Kwon Do 8-week program. Only 300 dollars.

The first lesson my Dad was taught was to turn mental in the face of an attacker. Pure mental.

So if someone comes up and looks like they're going to go for you, if you can't run, first thing to do is start looking like an absolute psychopathic lunatic, spread your body wide, and start shouting "get away from me, get away from me" :pac:

    I think that's class.
