The GT is a lovely car Stheno, especially in the dark metallic grey with the red interior.

    Hmm dilemma

I've come into a small and unexpected bit of cash, (very small lads, haven't won the lottery or anything), but it means I've a small bit of cash to upgrade the car.

The windfall is small enough, but selling the gtv and combining it after putting a bit away means I could upgrade from a 00 gtv to an 04 gt.

    Thoughts?

Hmmmm. The GTV is a classic in the making. The GT not so much, I'd be thinking maybe put a portion of the cash into some maintenance for the GTV?

What sized engine in the gt?
I know of a brera that cannot be sold that has the 3.2 l engine. You probably get it in the end for 6.

    Also what spec?

I'd still probably keep the gtv!

Ah I'm not in that market, I'm a no more than 3k person for a car :)

I'm leaning towards keeping the gtv, the gt values are shocking and soon the 04s will hit 2.5k whilst my gty will stay stable at about 1.5-2k depending on how desperate you are to sell, as they are so rare (there is a base price for you :) which tbh I think is decent for a well minded, and taken care of car :D_)

@ Alan and MM, spending a sixth of changing would transform the gtv, and tbh, I just love that car, I've a fab mechanic who listens to me (which when you are a girl is rare), keeps the car in great nick, and anytime I look to upgrade it encourages me, unless its madness.

This tbh is the thing when it comes to driving a car which is one of 20 odd in the country, regardless of the condition as it's a very unique looking car you just get to adore it, I dunno what I'd like to drive next tbh.

And @ MM did you mean GT or GTV?

As you've described my car colour and interior in leather :)

I always see one in this colour with this interior when I'm in a car park in Dublin:

Yeah the gtv is fairly rare alright. Good example sold (had been maintained by Gerry in ti for a number of years) a few weeks back for around 1800.
I can get one that needs work for 650 tomorrow but the lack of room to keep a car stored for a couple of months is stopping me. Hopefully in a few years there'll still be a few around!:) although I'd be after the 3.0 L ones as opposed to the twin spark.

Those breras are dropping fast in price. They can't be sold at what already is a good decent price. Stupid gm v6's.

There were no gtvs at the italian 100 but there was 3 spiders. It'd make you wonder where they all went as there were similar numbers produced.

    @ M that's my car but in a gtv shape, it's gorgeous :)

@ Schortho, you are right you can pick them up for nothing, I bought mine for about €800 and have easily put three times and more into it, so it's now 100% roadworthy, looks good inside apart from the drivers seat and needs the aerial fixed. I reckon with a 15 month nct and a decent service getting plugs etc up to date mine will hit the 1500 mark, I know a guy here who sold one in ****e condition with no nct to a guy in the uk for that (same year as mine) so I'll over price it, but you'll have dibs.

I might put mine on the market in November if I'm avaricious, but I do love the beast, she will shortly be my longest alfa, my OHs kids refer to it as the cool car, needs feck all doing and is appreciating in value.

I've an alternative ( the auto merc  for long work journeys), it:eek:s easy to park, looks great, sounds great, and should be run into the ground.

In short, the only reason I'd change is if I got a work contract that paid me a fortune in a car allowance (which I've had ) and enforced a rule that meant I couldn't have the gtv.

Not the best colours but they would polish up well.

They seem expensive. What are they worth?

Depends. A bad example somewhere around 400-800.
A good example (requiring no work, ti autos or similar receipts, years nct, in excellent condition) I'd be willing to pay 1500 for one. If its was mint or it had the 3.0 v6 I'd pay 2k.
Most people wouldn't however, but these cars are feckin rare. There's around 20 gtv's and I'd say 50 spiders (you've had 3 generations of spiders and one gtv) on the road in Ireland.

When the right gtv pops up/I've got space and the cash to spare on what would be a 2nd weekend car (once I'm back in college ill be getting the bus into town so 156 will be weekend fun) ill buy one. May be waiting a while for all that to happen though. :(

Sweet suffering jaysis what a weekend, loaded the car up for testing on Friday lunchtime, the rest of Team GXR were all stuck in work so I was out by myself, not a problem. Off I went, nice out lap, car felt solid enough, next lap started to press as temps came up and the back of the car was sliding all over the place, having to counter steer halfway through every corner, wasn't just set up loose there was something going on then temp flew up and the car started revving out so in the back gate. Turns out may rad had broken and hit the ground sending my (Evans Waterless) Coolant all over my tyres, hence my sliding! Also pulling the throttle cable with it

Anyway the boys in the Tuning Factory got me a rad and it went in late Friday night, we couldn't bleed it because there's a ban on running engines after 6. So down Saturday morning to bleed it, that all went well, through scrutiny then we noticed the throttle cable had kinked and wasn't retracting. A quick dash by the boys to the workshop to get a spare, get it and out to qualify. Panic over car sitting in assembly ready to do.

Out I went, warmed up tyres and brakes then did two flying laps, off the pace but closer than I had been then I caught traffic, slowed down and coming up into turn 4 trying to line up and go by the slower cars in front I locked the brakes and ended up in the dirt so ended up watching the session from the marshalls post.

I still ended up P4 and had fresh rubber for the race. The gravel had taken out my power steering belt so another dash to the factors and on it went. Car was ready to rock for race 1.

Lined up on the grid and sure enough I bogged it down on the line and got swallowed by all the cars behind me on my slow run into turn 1. I was passed by the leaders of production class and it's hard work to get by those guys especially since there was a championship being decided in this very race! I placed my car on the bumper of Norman Fawcett who needed to finish third to win the championship and he was indeed third in his class, I made a move up the inside of turn 1 and he closed the door on me quite late and I backed out, given I wasn't really racing him and I'd lost the guys from my class I decided I wasn't going to ruin his race by coming together and I stayed behind unless I could get him on an exit. Brought the car home for my first chequred flag in Mondello (red and black flag in the last 2 races). I also did my personal best time in the race so happy I was.

Race 2 wasn't until Sunday so the car went up on the stands and we hit the bar for a few pints to relax. Early enough night and an early start on a wet Sunday morning. The car on stands with a wet and slick sitting at each corner. At lunchtime the place dried out in the space of half an hour so slicks back on, anti-roll bar reconnected and rear suspension stiffened again, into assembly and due to the reverse grid I was on P1. I needed a good start to fight it out, launched the car well in first gear but disaster, missed second gear, got neutral had to root for second and had been passed by my entire class again. **** it, put the head down and went after them, I had managed to stay ahead of the Touring Class grid. I was suffering with my brakes, having the brake way too early and loosing seconds each lap on the cars in front. Coming down into turn 1 brakes locked, car went sideways but I pulled it back around and ploughed on, on the second last lap it locked up again in the same spot but this time I couldn't get it turned in and went straight for another stint in the kitty litter in front of the full grandstand :(

Had an absolute blast and as usual a big up to the guys at Team GXR, couldn't turn a wheel without them :D

Long term lurker, first time poster here on boards.ie
I'm looking to spend about 1.5k-2.5k on a car. I'm only going to be in the country for 4 more months so not looking to spend anymore than that. Just looking for something that's not going to be very problematic (2006 320d being my last car).
Can anyone send me a link to a thread/sticky where I can find advice on this?
    Thanks!

    What's with people ?

Right I called about one with a tan coloured roof.

The roof is knackered and at the very least needs to be repaired. It hasn't had an NCT in two year. It's had work from TI autos including clutch and belts about two years ago although the receipts are missing.

The ad states 1600..........is it even worth 600?

Actually don't bother answering that, I've just spoken to Gerry in Ti Autos and I'm not bothered.

2 weeks ago I check coolant level in Mini; all fine. Today driving 3 miles to have MoT done, engine overheating warning comes on amber. 1 mile to go so I press on, red light as I pull in to dealership. Decided to go to Mini garage as want quote for MSFW. Wait for it to cool a bit, check header tank which is very low.

They say they'll check before putting on MoT as any warning light is now a failure. Turns out it's leaking from water pump and thermostat. Not sure how they failed in such a short time although long motorway journey since I last tested. Thankfully both warranty items, waiting to see what alternative car as thermostat is on back order meaning 7-10 days minimum.

Have I any chance if an M6 or 760Li, I wonder.....

Shouldn't be too difficult to find a car that will last you 4 months trouble free. Model wise an accord would be the first thing that springs too mind. Maybe repeat your post in the bangernomics thread. Alsp mention the mileage you'll be doing over the next 4 months.

Anyone know about the quality of fuels from Capmus fuel stations?

The new one on the east wall road is quite cheep. I have never seen one before so unsure of the quality.

Probably keep your current car, will never get the money back you have put into it over the months/years on resale?

On the other hand you only live once.....:)
