Well overdue then. As its the 2L twin spark the belt is more expensive than the smaller engined twin sparks due to the balancing belt. You'd need to do the pump as well. When bushings need doing its nearly better to do the parts as well (eg if the arb bushing goes you may as well replace the whole arb as its a bitch of a job and you don't want to be doing it again in 3 months time when the arb needs replacing)

I hope it was a cheeky offer at that!:D
He couldn't tell me when it was last serviced only that it was a while ago. The oil was at the minimum mark and dirty. Also had a drop of oil on the ground but nothing too bad. Coolant low too. It felt like it needed a dam good service but the engine and box felt very strong.

The offer was above 500 mentioned earlier so all in all I think it was a fair one.

You could actually drive a proper performance BMW. do it! :P

Now now, lets not get into the slagging the 535d again. In real world terms she is faster than most cars out there.

However it certainly aint an m car, and it aint no v10 either. I reckon i would still be a couple of g's short for that one. But there are going to be other m5s that would be a possibility.

    An eye opener, I think.

The car can be rescued from the brink right now. Another winter and it'll be too far gone.

Btw, the sierra cosworth I was talking about a while ago, the one i said your 535 wouldnt beat. I found out during the week that its putting out 450 bhp:D
No wonder I had such a stupid grin on my face going down the road ;)

Haha that must be a mad car to drive. Obviously one modded to that power would beat a stock 535 (and most stock cars on the road probably), so it couldnt have been the one trying to race me!

    That is all.

Seriously giving some thought to calling in tomorrow and seeing what the cost to change with the 535d would be :D

    Silver though...

Personally id have a audi or merc V8 over that V10.

Cool car but the running costs would be astronomical

You have to ask yourself if its worth it to do.
If you plan to keep it for a couple if years then its worth saving, if you plan to sell it on next summer probably not.
It's an alfa, it could break your heart. At the same time it is the kind of car you look back at whenever you leave it.

Small oil leak could be from a leaking rocket cover gasket. This happened to mine, but only seemed to be occur after walloping the sump of a ramp 2 weeks into owning her!:(

Lack of oil would worry me. Although there's two Alfa's in the pic, it doesn't seem to be enthusiast owned at all. Will probably need a new set of plugs as well if service history is a bit iffy.

If it was me and I was after one I'd go for it. Others probably not.

I think I'd take a chance at what I offered but no more. Too many loose ends and unanswered questions. Ti autos are coming back with its invoices tomorrow. I'll see what they say.

I'd certainly like it and very much enjoy it but at any more than my offer I'd be better off buying one in good condition and maintaining it properly.

Its a resto as it is.

Audi? Blegh, The only audi I would ever aspire to having would be the RS v10 tdi.

Don't like mercs, my car horn is specific to bimmers and americana :D

I have quite the horn for a mark 1 A8. Even more so with this engine

And I damn nearly bought one too, a beautiful burgundy 4.2 Quattro. 95d27600, what ever happened to you :(

Love how brutal the 4.2 Audi V8 sounds tbh

When the time comes if RS prices haven't dropped it will be an S4/S6 for me

Agree with Scortho, if you can justify it as a project go for it :) That's essentially how I treated mine :)

    Isn't every alfa though. :D
Mines in excellent condition and I've a list as long as my arm of work I want to do.

True :) fun cars though :)

    I'd love a spyder.

@ ba barabus, I forgot to say, have a tip over to alfa owner and read the gtv/spyder section, you might find some very useful info there.

When I got my gtv, it sounded severely unwell, then sounded like a phlegmatic tractor, and my mechanic was afraid it was the big end (is that the right expression? or is it bottom end?)

Anyway I posted up a recording of the sound, and someone on alfa owner just on that basis said that the balance belt tensioner was going/about to snap, and sure enough it was that.

My mechanic was amazed, a. that when he informed me it wasn't the big end, I asked if it was the balance belt tensioner, and b. that someone on the internets knew what it was based on the sound.

Also, factor in a new variator along with a belt/pump, as if the variator hasn't been changed, it will sound disgusting.

That's fixable, my crocked knee has gone on strike :(

Where I'm working this week has a trek up five flights of stairs each day, which doesn't agree with my crocked knee, so it's now rather painful :(

As someone who is on the ground a lot and as a result constant cracking knees, I fee your pain :(

It's not laziness when I use the elevator rather than the stairs well some of it is

    That's the 2.7 V6 though

Just thinking about that car, it's probably quicker than a stock S4 V8.

Yeah, fecked it is, can't kneel or climb excessive flights of stairs for any sort of prolonged period, I'm up and down those damned stairs about eight times a day, no lift either :(

It's at a level of soreness that I'm considering sleeping on the couch rather than crawling upstairs to go to bed :(
