    5 1/2 now!

Playing against the awful Mets this week who have given up has certainly helped but still, it's a good streak they're on but the NL Central trio are still all looking good. I presume they'll be playing each other at some stage in the next few weeks so they'll all take games off each other but do the Nats have any series left against those 3 teams? That'll be the make or break of it I think.

They have 3 against the cards but I dont think that will matter as I think the cards will win out the division. Pirates and Reds play 6 times in the closing games, those will be pivotal for the nats. On top of that I think the Astros can play spoiler as they have suddenly have won 5 of their last 8 and are playing well they play the Red's while the tricky cubs take on the Pirates. The WC race is far from over, not as exciting as the AL , yet. But if the Reds and Pirates lose a couple over the next week then things could get really exciting!

So as someone with no horse in the race, I should be rooting for the Cards to struggle a bit to make that series against the Nats more interesting?

The 6 games between the Pirates/Reds are going to be great to watch. Definitely looking forward to them so.

Unfortunately for you, the Reds play a series against the Mets in the last week so there's 3 games in the bag for them!

Ah to be honest I think the Nats have left it far too late, BUT and its a big But if they do manage to make it they are heating up at the really right time!

Quietly enjoying the Yankees making a real push for the AL WC in September.

Its unbelievable that the Yankees are in it with their team make up. 1 game back.

You would think......but the Reds just followed the high of a 6 and 1 week against the Cardinals and Dodgers with losing 2 out of 3 to the Cubs

I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Girardi was AL manager of the year. They will probably need to make the playoffs but he has done a great job to get them where they are...

The cubs are a dangerous side, great pitching staff. If they can get some solid bats for next year they could be a contender. I still think your Red's are going to get it done.

Funny I spend quite a bit of time in Ohio, more so in Cleveland but I will have to go to a Reds game soon, I might try to make it there for opening week next year.

I would be very surprised if John Farrell or Bob Melvin dont get AL manager of the year.

Girardi doing a decent job no doubt but Farrell in particular has had an amazing first season as manager.

Most Reds fans have resigned themselves to the 1 game playoff.......which has sparked the debate about the pitcher for that game.

At this point, it's most likely to be Reds v Pirates (unless one team dominates the other when they play each other 6 times in the last week or so of the season, it will just help the Cardinals stay ahead)

Mat Latos is the unquestioned ace of the staff with Cueto being out so much this season, but Homer Bailey has owned the Pirates in the past 2 seasons.......

My thought would be to pitch Bailey, and save Latos for game 1 vs the Cardinals if they win.

Interesting that you would rather pitch Bailey, I dont know enough about their individual records against the Pirates or Cards but what if its against the Cards?

Against the Cardinals it would undoubtedly be Latos......it also looks like Cueto is ready to come back, not that there's high expectation, but he's another pitcher with fantastic career numbers against the Pirates.

I'm not one for going on career numbers against a club as I think they cant be all that reliable considering the high movement of players these days.

Farrell hasn't had to deal with near as much though!

Agreed, but the core of the pirates team is the same.......his history just gives the Reds that option.....generally for the 1 game playoff you have little choice but to throw your best guy, but considering Bailey's success against the Pirates......it just gives the Reds the option of using him instead of their ace.

The benefit of that being that they would have Latos for game 1 and game 5 of the NLDS if it went that far......using their ace in the wildcard game, at best, he would be available again for game 3 or 4 of the NLDS.

Strasburg scratched from next start. Forearm tightness apparently, but not related to his TJ so they're saying it's not serious.

Still, If I was a Nats fan I'd be afraid that their great run could be messed up by their ace getting injured.

In other injury news, Gardner out for the rest of the season for the Yankees.

Ohlendorf has been solid when covering, either way we need all the pitching staff to step it up.

Murder over in the AL East with two games separating the Rays, Yankees and O's and all gunning for a wildcard spot

Yankees lost today (well four runs down bottom of the 7th so I'm assuming they will)

I'm going to watch Tillman and the O's in Toronto. They should win it

It's funny that in the AL, all the teams in contention are doing their best to lose it. The Rays and Rangers have been awful, the Orioles have been hit and miss and the Yankees have now lost the last two.

Compare that to the NL where the Nats are on a roll and the Reds, Pirates and Cards are all winning for the most part.

As you were in the NL with wins for the Nats/Pirates/Cardinals/Reds.

Tampa threw another one away in the AL and Texas look like they might lose again so all to play for tonight for the Yankees.

Sorry, my mistake. They were 5-2 up when I checked and presumed they went on and won. I must have been distracted by my Redskins getting pummelled in the NFL.

So yeah, very interesting now. I can't wait to hear what Ollie thinks of where we are now.

Dont talk to me about those damn Redskins. Shanahan needs to seriously think about a change of QB until Griffen is back to 100%, he played hurt last week and wasnt good until Philly eased off. Same today.
