Just saw a clip for it there... looks god awful.

This brand of comedy seems to be all RTE are capable of these days.

There is also a man in Oz who patented 'Burger King' - so they call them Hungry Jacks instead. They've thrown LOADS of money at him down the years, but he just refuses (and it;s not a big chain or anything either).

The cynic in me thinks, his whole extended family (outside of siblings, wife and kids) is just waiting for the day he dies to get the cash cow. :o

Oddly enough, could be coincidental (or just racist mythology) but I did hear a few times there that Aboriginals were the only race in human history to not independently invent the wheel (or at least become accustomed to it way, way, WWWAAAAYYYY back by other ancient civilisations who had).

Bit harsh considering you don't know any of the facts.

Do you? I thought you'd just picked a random topic to inform and entertain the masses but if you know more than the bare info in the article you've linked to then why not fill us in on the details?

How on earth can you trademark a name like 'Damo', that is in common usage (especially around Tallaght) ?

I know one Damo.....clearly its Northside :pac:

I'd be amazed if this gets anywhere in the Courts

I know a lot more but can't say as the court case is on Friday.

I assume that on the slim chance this chap wins a few bob, every cent will be turned over to Damo Suzuki?

Ok sounds to me that the 'artist' in question is trying to make a quick buck here. I didn't think you could patent a fictional characters name and the RTE act have been on the telly for many years now...

The writers of the Omen should sue him for using the name of their fictional character as his given name.

    Hey Damien O’Regan

    I'M DAMO!

When I was a young fella Damian was always spelled Damian. Poor show by the Irish Times getting his name wrong considering the nature of the case.

    http://www.patentsoffice.ie/eregister/register/TMRegister.aspx?idappli=232533

He has patented Damo but the bit at the end is interesting.

Registration partially revoked following proceedings under Section 51 of the Trade Marks Act, 1996. Partial revocation granted from 23/03/2011 in respect of the following goods and services: Class 9 Computer software; publications in electronic form; sound players and other related apparatus for recording, transmission, storage and reproduction of sound and images. Class 41 Sound recording services; television and radio entertainment services; multimedia radio and television programmes; publishing of books, magazines and other texts on-line.

That doesn't say who initiated the proceeding which led to this partial revokation.

Still you've gotten him a bit of name recognition, ensured we glance at the news on Saturday to see how he got on (extra bit of publicity there) and sneaked in a link to his website without the mods noticing. So its a result really.

I'd imagine it hinges on this aspect
The characters have made live performances, have a noted internet presence and have also released a music album.

If he owns the name for entertainment purposes then he has a case. A bit stupid of RTE frankly, they should have steered well clear of this, it's not as if it's hard to check.

He has owned the name for over 14 years.

    From the Irish Times story.

The characters of Damo and Ivor first appeared on the RTÉ programme The Republic of Telly in 2011.

Someone brought proceedings under Section 51 or the Trade Marks Act which led to Mr O'Regan's registration of the name Damo being revoked in respect of TV programmes. I suspect that someone was acting for RTE but even if they weren't RTE would be free to allow someone else to use the name, providing it was after 23/3/2011. So maybe they were not stupid?

They'll kick it around some before chucking it out. Toss it straight away and the lawyers don't make any money.

Andrew is the son of businessman, Richard Quirke and brother of Wesley Quirke, boyfriend of former Miss World, Rosanna Davison.

I wonder if that helped to convince RTE to give him a show.

....and have also released a music album.

Just saying it is not black and white here.

I got entangled in a case similar and the law is the law at the end of the day. We went home with tails between legs.

I think the music album is covered as well.

In will be in the detail of that where the case will lie, I'd imagine.
It's alright to say that somebody might be stupid enough to go to court for publicity, but the lawyers aren't there on a wheez.

Isn't all this moot because he's trademarked the name "Damo", but the act on RTE is called "Damo and Ivor". It's like me gettnig a trademark on the word "The" and then suing every band with "the" in their name.
