Interesting. Had similar-ish problems with HDMI (in my case, video was cutting out sporadically). Eventually figured out that the Horizon box doesn't work well with HDMI switches - nor did the previous UPC Cisco box. Other devices (360, PS3, AppleTV) work fine with the same switch.

Very disappointed with the response from UPC though; 'oh, there's a 3rd party device involved? Ok, issue resolved. Nothing to see here.'

In my case, plugging directly into the AV receiver instead of into the HDMI switch worked.
Didn't really have too many problems with the old Cisco box and HDMI switches, sometimes when going from an SD channel to a HD channel or vice versa it might knock off but thats all.

However if these brand new state of the art Horizon boxes are not able to work in a home cinema type set up then what use are they. They should be the entertainment hub of the house, or at least that seems to be the way they are marketing it but if it can't interact with other products then its not up to scratch.

is the general consensus - people are not happy and regretting the change? I was really tempted to upgrade but seems like there is a lot of displeasure...

the box is a lot better than the existing one , but there are a lot of niggly issues that should have been fixed by now

I still far prefer it to the old one. I just think they've over-hyped it a lot, and it could do with a lot of visual/functional tweaks.

Sorry if this has been asked/answered before. Is there a way of disabling apps?

I think its considerably worse than the old one - slower, more laggy, and generally a pain in the arse to use,

Anyone notice it now seems to skip all the unsubscribed HD channels, except Sky Movies Disney, for some strange reason.

None of this actually works. Don't waste your time trying to configure. UPC say they are not implementing it.

I know they don't work, but Mr. Boland is a quite a booster for this POS box. So UPC are saying that they've given up on implementing? I've already got them to attach a cisco router for Wi-Fi, it's not great but at least you can implement parental controls and get accurate reporting.

I, for one, am regretting the change.

It might depend on your TV habits. I like to regularly check what is on the other channels (there are 80 of them after all!) but keep the current one in plain view so as not to disrupt the other people in the room who are also watching TV. This is no longer possible. I either have to change the channel completely or bring up the Guide, which blocks everything.

If you rarely change channels or if watch TV alone most of the time then this might not be an issue. But if you like to casually browse other channels without being too disruptive to what is on, stick with the old box.

Personally I find the whole user interface to be a backwards step. It looks better I'll grant you but as another poster said the ability to simply browse has gone. Also it is very laggy and seems to be getting slower the longer it is left on. Unplugging the unit and turning it back on works for a while but thats not really a solution.

Also my own issue is the inability to use the box with other equipment, such as an amp or HDMI switch.

With regards to the internet and Wi-Fi, I find the Wi-Fi isn't as good as before and my internet speeds for wired connection haven't really improved that much.

The only advantage the horizon has is the ability to record more programmes at the same time, but is it worth the trade off with all the issues? In my opinion no. I so wanted this box to be all it was cracked up to be but unfortunately its not at the moment. With more testing and some firmware updates who knows? For now its back to the old Cisco HD box in one room and router in the other combo for me.

I'm finding the HDMI switch working fine, But it is a new box ( The third so far) .
What they are not telling You about the broadband issue is that You cant get 150Mb without a 1Gb card. I can get up to 87Mb on a good day, It's never consistent.
It interface is a pain in the arse, The quick scroll arrow is gone and the qwerty remote eats the battery's.
But, I am hoping this gets better, If it ever works as good as its suposed to it will be great, Thats what I hope :(
The BIG thing they need to add is a netflix app and the addition of an internet browser. Here's hoping :)

im glad i avoided this they were to keen to get people to take it a good product sells itself im shour it will end up a decent box in the end but was released to early to many bugs the wireless issue would be a big one for me im certainly not with upc for there tv content which brings me to there big selling point record 4 things at same time while watching a 5 th thats a gimmick they dont put on 5 good things a month never mind at same time

I have been following both this thread and its predecessor with interest. I was supposed to be on the trial, but due to a FUBAR on UPC's part, I never proceeded (though was billed for *2* Horizon boxes for a number of months...another story). It does seem to be a common theme in that if you want decent wifi range, don't have a need for 4 recordings, and don't need it as a media hub (I have a PS3 and a Synology NAS), stay away from this, at least for now. I also like that I can put my existing router on the 5 GHZ range, have parental controls etc, which I would lose if I had Horizon, AFAIK.

I have been sitting on the fence for quite a while. What sealed it for me was that, for the first time in months, I pressed the Guide button (I have a HD box, Cisco maybe?) and instead of the going off and making a cup of tea while the guide loaded, it was just...there. I tried scrolling down..no lag. Brilliant! It also has channel logos, which I can take or leave, but the no lag bit was great.

So I'll watch the thread, but until the Horizon functionality is sorted, I'm out.

Yes, I have a Cisco HD box, the guide appears immediately + no sound loss.
I guess UPC must have done a firmware upgrade?

Well got the old Cisco HD box back this morning and the router. No problems with sound, able to browse through channels its great considering I haven't been able to watch TV for the last week with the Horizon box!

Also did a speed test just before the Horizon box was taken away and then with the old router when I got it back. And guess what? the Horizon was a poor second there as well!

Hopefully in a few months when all the bugs have been sorted out it will be something I could reconsider.

Hi I just got my Horizon Complete installed at my place. I want to configure the modem so things like change password, SSID, mac address allow/block...etc

Could you please let me know the access point? (192.168.?.?)

    Thank you.

There's an option somewhere in Settings to turn reminders on & off.

On my box, the same happened. Set a lot of Reminders, none appeared. Someone mentioned there's a setting for them, so I checked the setting (IIRC, it was already "On") and after that all reminders worked fine.

So I'm not sure if there's a bug, or else Reminders were Off by default and the Horizon box lets you set reminders without notifying you that you have to turn them on.

When I first heard about Horizon, I thought it sounded great and ordered it. Then I read this thread. I seriously considered not installing it and giving it back as part of the cooling off period, and try to get a shared dish installed in my apartment building for Sky. In the end I decided to give Horizon a go, and I'm glad I did. It works pretty damn good for me. Its definitely not as good as the Sky box but (for me) its just a few minor niggles rather than issues that make it unusable.

    1. The guide. Not being able to scroll through pages at a time is definitely irritating. Its also slower than Sky. Now this doesn't mean you press down on the remote and wait ages for it to change as some people have said. Its just fractions of a second slower than Sky, but it is noticeable. I think there are two possible issues. One is the little screen that gives a preview of what's on the channel you've highlighted (this is pointless and is a feature that probably sounded better on paper than in practice, get rid of it). The second is the logos for the channels. when you highlight that channel in the guide the logo becomes bigger. I wonder are these little animations slowing the whole thing down. Sky's guide has absolutely no frills, and if its a case of pointless frills versus speed, I'd take speed anyday. I can't decide which is better : Sky minimizing the channel you're watching and putting it in a corner while checking the guide, or Horizon making the guide transparent so you can still see the full picture in the background while checking the guide. With Horizon you can change the transparency level but it kind of interferes with being able to see the guide. You can either make it very transparent so you can follow the background program but make it hard to see the guide, or vice versa. But its not a big issue.

    2. Channel info and program info. Much more intrusive than Sky's. When I change channel on Sky, the channel and programme name are in a little bar at the bottom. I press back up if it bothers me and its instantly gone. With Horizon you get another transparent bar, but its BIG, taking up a third of the bottom of the screen and a bit at the tops for some unknown reason. It also take two clicks of back up to get rid of all the info that comes up.

    3. Remote control responsiveness. Definitely not as responsive as Sky's. It seems to be the box software rather than a remote control issue. With Sky if I go to a menu and then go into another menu and then another (so I'm 3 menus deep), to get back to the main screen I could press backup 3 times very quickly on the remote. With Horizon you have to press back up, wait until it actually backs up, then press again, then wait, then press again. So with Sky it doesn't matter if the box is a bit slow at a certain time, it remembers what you've pressed and will execute it eventually. Now when I say you have to wait with Horizon, you don't have to wait long, but its a little noticeable after coming from Sky.

    4. Search. Since I hadn't heard anything about search in this thread I was worried there would be no search feature but there is and it works quite well. But again Sky's is just a bit better. With Sky you type in the first 10 or so letters of the show and it will find it (now there are problems if you are not precise or you include "the" at the start etc.). With Horizon you can put in one search word (as far as I can see so far). So if you're looking for "low winter sun" you can only really put in "low" or "winter" or "sun", which can be a bit vague as search terms and give a lot of irrelevant results. Maybe you can put in actor's names and it will find those (unlike Sky) so maybe it is more open-ended but I haven't tested that yet. My main problem is with the organization of results. With Sky it groups all the individual episodes showing that week by the channel they are on, and within that grouping they are in chronological order. I just can't figure out how Horizon is grouping them. For example I looked up "Bones". It lumped all the weeks episodes into two groups. One of the groups had it ias a 60 minute drama show, the other as a 50 minute crime show (the episodes on in the middle of the night with less ads. Once you go into one of these groupings the episodes seem to be in no particular order with Wednesday's episodes being listed before Monday's etc.

Anyway these are my initial observations. All the above are relatively minor and haven't impacted my overall enjoyment. I would definitely recommend the system. I would say they are in Sky's league but still Sky are Top Dog. I think if UPC listened to this feedback and made some minor changes (which they don't seem intent on doing) they could be Sky's equal.

all sounds good but there tv content on basic package not much better than freeview and worse in some cases like when theres football on and you cant see it from ireland no such problems with freeview so im not with upc for tv and horizon box has been slated by 90% of people for wi fi signal so it wouldnt interest me at moment

wifi is the same if not better in my experience. i wonder is it to do with the location of the horizon box under a telly / in a cabinet, surrounded by other electronics, vs a router which is easier to put in a good broadcasting area? i'd expect reduced performance if the location is sub-par.
i think it's worth noting that more people contributing to the thread will be there to report negative experiences, if everything works great for me, i generally don't spend time online researching / commenting about it etc.

totally agree with LLMMML comments re: performance of the menu. skip all that animation crap until the graphics processor can keep up with it, at the moment it's just frustrating. or at least give people a 'vanilla' TV guide option that has text only and no delays. the other thing i dislike about the TV guide is that all the channel logos are black and white until you move over it and then it lights up in colour. this is useless in terms of finding the channel you want because you don't really 'see' the logo (which is made up of shape and colour) until you have selected it. this is just crap usability, a typical naff graphics 'feature'. please, give us substance not style.

so many no-brainers that they haven't thought of, appreciating that it's a new platform all the same. i'd like to see a Horizon Feature Suggestions thread, it's hard to make sense of such a massive thread like this. my sugestion for the day: clicking info on program info gives you the usual useless two lines of text. i'd like to see an option to link in to more info from an online source like IMDB / rotten tomatoes, where possible.

Position of the box in my case was not the cause of the crap wifi, as the box went in exactly the same spot as previous box and modem. Agree with the comments on the menu, after being on the trial from the start it was a serious gripe that the box tried to be too many things without being great at any, basic functionality should have been a priority, then add the rest of the bells and whistles. Unfortunately no one at UPC bothered to listen.

Hey Horizon experts! My UPC Cisco modem died at the weekend (that's weird, right?). After the usual hassle and pain dealing with UPC I now have my Horizon box.

Just a couple of quick questions:

So this page up / down in the guide thing hasn't been fixed?

What's the point of the favourite channels? I was hoping once setup there would be a new option in the tv guide to just see favourites like in sky.
