Gardaí have said the incident in Bailieborough is ongoing, we do not anticipate any more updates tonight. We will report official gardaí statements when they are ready to make them in the morning.

Would you prefer Fox News style reporting?

As they have said it's on-going, this means it's not over and I think there may still be possibly hostages or explosives involved.

Unrelated but the guards ripped me out of it on my way home in Bray. I have no record, was walking like everyone else and I didn't look or wasn't doing anything dodgy.

I said "Yas mustn't be busy if you're searching guys like me" and they said "Ah, we're searching everyone, a house got broken into" and I said "Lads yas don't think i'm breaking into houses do ya" and they said "no no, it's not that, we're just search all young lads" and I said "That's hardly legal, searching someone just because they're young" I didn't say it in a smart way like but they where very rough with me at first untill they realised I didn't do anything.

Like i'm not known to the guards, no record etc. and they were fairly sound but surely to god they can't just search my walk trough the mainstreet because i'm a certain age?

Nothing wrong with challenging authority, it's part of how we ensure authority is acting within its legal jurisdiction.

I'm sure the Gardaí in this situation were able to tell the OP why they were searching him. Nothing wrong with asking why or looking for legal clarification.

What do you think we live in a dictatorship? The guards didn't think I was smart. I was merely enquiring about the circumstances and they were spot on about it. I'm not challenging anyone, I'm just outside my own neighbour and I get ripped out of it for 'NO' reason other than being young. I know alot of people say they didn't nothing when they did but I did NOTHING; I didn't even recognise them at first cause they where driving a small hatchback in plain uniform.

This is called the Rep. of Ireland and I can enquire as to why i'm being stopped if I want. If you don't want to exercise your rights. That's fine.

I didn't hinder the search in anyway and I cooperated 100%. We even had a little chat when they realised I was a normal guy on his way home.

You're the kinda guy that lets dictators rise by never question anything. I know the guards have a job and I respect their job (I considered becoming one before) but they must have more probably cause other than me being a young man. They stopping me because i'm a "young lad". Age discrimination works both ways. Doesn't anyone agree with me?

Again, I was polite, answered questions promptly, didn't resist. I merely inquired as to why I was being searched.

If I diserve a beating for that as someone suggested, then you're all sheeple. Not people. I wouldn't mind if I was looking or acting suspicious. I was on my way home, walking straight, didn't even notice the cops. I wasn't behaving in ANY way suspicious and they never claimed I was.

If it continues to happen on a regular basis, i'll go complain to the seargeant, then the super, then the ombadsman. You can't stop a guy because of his age. I was walking home for gods sake.

    .

In fairness, if they'd been given a description of "young male acting suspiciously in area of burglary" then it's entirely appropriate and in no way age discrimination.

I know what you mean but they didn't say anything about me fitting a description; They said they were stopping ALL younglads. People can't help how old they are. Like the people walking past who know me must think i'm some kinda scumbag now. They think 'Well, the guards wouldn't be stopping him unless he was up to something' and I put alot of weight on my good name.

Now, on the other hand, if I fit some description, that'd be perfectly fine; But it was nothing to do with that. They were simply stopping ALL "young lads" Being a young man isn't probable cause for a search. The law of the land agrees with me.

I bet you know your rights as well.

It was hardly a fcuking 90 year old pensioner doing the robbing.

Every guard knows it's the young lads that do be doin the crimes.

Well I have no history of break-ins or a history of any criminal record. They told me they caught your man red handed and he was a traveller. I look like a kinda respectable guy and not like a traveller.

Look, I just don't want to bet getting ripped out of it every day on my way home for absolutely no other reason than my age. As I said, I don't care wether "I know my rights" is cliched; There are laws in this land and EVERY single one of us must abide by them, especially the police. The next time, i'm going to say i'm sorry officer but you're going to have to do better than me being a young lad for a search in a polite manner. They're ripping plenty of good young folk out of it without any regard for due process.

This isn't right lads. They can't just walked up to a guy and search him on the mainstreet. They need a reason, even if it's a whiff of cannabis or alcohol or whatever but being 26 is NOT a reason to be searched. This no one agree with me or are you all sheeple already?
