    Wednesday 28th August

A session still not on the cards yet so the idea was to try get the same mileage in but easy miles. Wasn't sure how it would go as this would be the longest run in several weeks and I was doing it midweek:eek:

Anyhow got out about 6.15 ish this evening with a plan to get about 6 in before hooking up with the fit for life group at the club , going out with them and then cool down by running home and that's exactly what happened. Got to club at a little under 7 miles and had time to refresh my small water bottle before heading off again. Then back to club for couple of mins to refill the bottle again as the water goes warm when I'm holding it in my hand and back home. THis was tiring but great boost to get it done. Stretched plenty when i got home and iced the leg just as a precaution. Had the watch on autopause. Wasn't exactly an unbroken run but wasnt hanging around for any more than a few mins each time I stopped at the club.

    Thursday 29th August

No running as work got in the way again

    Friday 30th August

20 hour shift at work finishishing at 4am this morning, so you guessed it, no running!

    Saturday 31st August

Had to go back into work this evening for a few hours so didnt get home till 7.30.

As Sunday was going to be a busy day with son's football match in the morning and then going to the Dubs match in the afternoon there wasnt much chance of me doing an LSR at dawn like some people so decided to do it tonight even though I didnt get out till 9.30pm

I was wrecked from working the long hours not only this weekend but for the last couple of weeks to be honest so this one was purely about being on the feet for 2hrs + and would do as much as the body could cope with.

    Ended up with 16.03mi @10:05

    Avg HR : 119
    Max HR : 130

Apart from the niggly hamstrings, tight calves, aching quads, tender achilles, lower back niggle, numb glutes, neck and shoulder pain, I felt absolutely fine on this run:D

Delighted to get this done all things considered as I'm travelling with work on Monday to Malta and although I'll pack the runners, not sure how much running I'll actually get done Mon-Wed

Very happy to crash through the 800 mile mark too, not too far away from my 898 of last year now.

Jesus I wish I had better news for you but i've had a nightmare few days suffering with lower back pain. This is my bulging disc striking again. Not helped of course by four flights and hours of sitting in a conference room. I'm gutted at the moment, just getting over the hammer issue and now this:mad::mad:. Not giving up on Athlone just yet but will give it a few days and reassess.

Sorry Blocky, I was so looking forward to this race. Will do all I can to make the start line for this. Will keep you posted over next few days on progress.

You really have been though it all and have gone the windy road, tough luck RR.

Make the right decision, plenty more races and don't be worrying about me!

Take a few days off and then re-assess, don't chance it back (pardon the pun) too soon.

Still no running since Aug 31st but back is feeling stronger today. Did 30 mins on the bike last night and tonight and some stretching. Can definitely feel the pain subsiding now and can actually stand up without holding anything for support. Was tempted to try a short run tonight but will try a lunchtime run tomorrow instead. Feeling confident now about making the start line for Athlone on saturday but God only knows what time I'll do.

Some probably think I'm mad even attempting it but what the hell, life is too short and I run for enjoyment as well as trying to run fast and this gig is one not to miss with all the Boardies in attendance. It's a risk but sure some risks are worth taking and life would be dull without taking a chance now and again.

It's 'Wellbeing Week" at work today and I got my Body Mass Analysis done. Interest figures, don't know how accurate or reliable they are but makes for some good reading for me

My % Fat is 12.7% (Ideal range 11-21.9%)
My Metabolic Age is 27;)....I like that one!
My BMR (basal metabolic rate) is really good so that means I can burn calories quickly...which is just as well with all the chocolate i've eaten recently!

Wonder how that might affect me in later stages of marathon? Must look into that.

RR - I really think you should reconsider running this.
If you want to be there, go and shout abuse support all the Boardsies.

13 miles is a tough gig. The damage you could do for the sake of 1 race.

Yep, have a good think about it RR before you commit. You don't want to be busted for the long haul.

But if you feel you are able for it then no doubt give it a shot but take it handy.

Ah RR your post looks as mad as some of the comments I make :D
I think if you are being honest and not exaggerating about not having to hold onto something for support...then that speaks for itself.
    Don't do it!
Just wait till you gradually work yourself back up to your previous level of fitness and then do it. Maybe Waterford half in December would be a good target for a new PB.
You have absolutely nothing to gain by running 13 miles in a race which you havn't trained for and are in doubt of finishing never mind doing well.
I don't think going down to support the boardsies will make you feel any better either, you might end up entering at the last minute.
Think of your well being and how sh%t you will feel if you can't run after the race for months.

i hear you all. Thanks for the comments. Seriously.considering withdrawing. Have changed my mind abour fifteen times at this stage...will i run...wont i run.

Have been in at the grant thornton race tonight supporting my colleagues and back qas sore from just standing around.Thoughts of even abandoninf dcm are crossing my mind.

Do what your gut tells you - it sounds like it's screaming "don't do it". Your mind will only tell you you'll be disappointed if you pull out. If that's the only reason for going ahead, think how disappointed you'll be if you're out injured for months on end as a result. Better to regret pulling out than regret not pulling out. (Advice that doesn't just apply to the forthcoming race :D)

If DCM is possibly still a runner, would you not be better off definitely giving the half a miss and putting all your energies into recovering as best you can for that? Was DCM one of your main goals this year? How important is Athlone compared to it?

Have spent many hours reconsidering. dont think I could just go down and watch especially since I got special dispensation to run from OH given that it's our wedding anniversary that day.

yesterday and today I genuinely thought I may be ok for this , not to race it hard but maybe even try MP.

Honestly this was how i was this time last week but genuinely feeling much better than that now. Good enough to run a half though? Probably not if I'm honest with myself.

What a good insight that is. My mind had been telling me or trying to convince me that I could run this weekend but I think my gut is beginning to win me over.

Yes DCM was the "main thing" as RK would say. I'm really thinking now try and get right for that but I think I'll have to readjust target for definite. Part of me is even thinking whether I can be truly ready for that one too

Thanks everyone, I think the sensible thing to do here is forget Athlone and see if I can get 4-5 weeks decent training in before Dublin. I'd have to forget a three week taper for sure though and maybe do two weeks assuming I can get back to normal running a week from now.

That's a good decision, RR - I think 'main thing...' in this case is your ability to get back running regularly with no injuries.

No doubt your disappointed, but in a few weeks time there'll be other races around the corner and Athlone will be forgotten.

Tough call to have RR to make but ultimately its the right one for you.. there will be other races..

Probably more like he will keep himself out of the dog house.

Hard luck RR, its frustrating having to pull out of a race because of injury but its better to miss one rather than 10. Hope your sorted soon.

Good decision! I was in your shoes and knew I should not have ran the Wexford half.. But I did and look at me now barely getting back out there 5 months later! Speedy recovery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭blockic

Right decision for you RR, you would have been mad to race from what it sounds like although I know you are disappointed! You'll thank yourself in the long haul!

Tough call RR but definitely sounds like the right decision and a position any of us could be in at any time. Enjoy your anniversary :)

Took the day off work...some retail therapy this morning in Base2Race in ballymount...new Brooks Adrenalines, gels, shorts, salt tabs, zero tabs etc....yes I'm optimistic about DCM...I'm an eternal optimist

To be followed by trip to physio this afternoon...trying out a new that's not too far from where I live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭RedRunner

So things I've learned today at the Physio:

    • Deciding not to run in Athlone was a really good call:)
    • Very tight hamstrings with some scar tissue found and treated...ouch!
    • Extremely weak glutes
    • Stiff joints in my spine which mean my spine is not currently curving naturally
    • Weak core which means that there is more pressure on my lower back..which in turn is causing other issues

Oh...and Athlone Half Marathon Crew have agreed to defer my entry till next year :-)

Plan: No running for a further 3 days, with just a gentle 2 miler to ease back into it. Followed by another physio appointment on Tuesday to start working on the back stiffness. (This is going to cost me!)

In meantime follow instructions to do 2 sets of exercises per day to strengthen core and glutes and loosen hammers.
