Of course only winning 2 of the last 8 league games meant we only won the league by 3 pts from Southampton :D Nothing like wrapping it up early!

I appreciate what you are saying about Whelan (I was a big fan of him by the way) but I think some of you are being harsh when judging younger home grown players. There are far more foreign players playing in the league today. This includes a huge array of international players and a fair amount of world class players too.

Opportunities are very limited now, especially at the big clubs. There is just so much money in the game these days, and so much pressure on managers to get instant results. Why risk playing a youngster when you can go out and spend your Sky Sports / BT cash on an established international player.

As such I think its a wee bit unfair to compare a 23 year old hom grown player today to a 23 year old home grown player from the 70s.

    Sorry, see that now.
And Coventry beat us 4-0...... fk off Coventry :)

    Terry Gibson hat trick :o

We did win the return match 5-0 :P

Gibson went on to flop at United and have success after that with the crazy gang (Won the F.A cup in 88 :()

I think that is a complete overexageration at this point in time to be perfectly Frank (you can still be perfectly Nuri).

As impressed with Countinho's ability as we all are, Garica has extreme end product during his time at Liverpool. It is way too early to argue that he is a level or two above Garcia imo.

EDIT: Praise like that needs to be earned and, imo, Coutinho hasn't earned anywhere near the plaudits Garcia had.

For me Garcia was one of our most frustrating performers, he scored some imoirtant goals but he was frequently anonymous. I have absolutely no doubt that on potential Coutinho is a better prospect. He has had better performances in a Liverpool shirt than Garcia ever did. Garcia drifted in and out of games, he was nowhere near "legendary" status..Coutinho will,I am certain, surpass him. Never a big Garcia fan.

    Cult hero in a nutshell.

The word 'Profligate' was invented for Garcia.

Henderson was excellent against United, shows a good attitude, and has shown glimpses of ability that suggests he could potentially make a CM spot his own one day (perhaps taking the reins from Gerrard).

But comparing him to a club legend (albeit one I didn't see play) is a bit much imo.

Henderson has yet to even justify his price-tag at this stage imo

Our squad is improving with signings. Henderson is improving. He'll need to keep up! Really like the guy's determination, seeing as it's paying off with good performances, unlike Downing and Spearing who looked like they were trying their best, but with no real positive results.

Garcia was the one of the most frustrating players I've ever seen in a Liverpool shirt. Take away a few of those very important goals he scored and he was a bit sh1t.

Yeah but he'll always be remembered for not scoring against Chelsea in that EC semi-final

    He is spot on.

22 wins, 14 draws, and 6 losses was our league form that season.

I was by no means trying to suggest that I have distinct memories of the season or anything. But I was curious enough to see what kind of record that team had after someone posted it... Wikipedia is great. ;-)

I don't think he's shown this. As a CM he won't have the freedom to roam forward and close down opposition players at will. His game intelligence and position will be need in the CM role more than his energy and that is where I think he could struggle.

True, and the fact that it wasn't really a goal made it even sweeter really!

So tempted to drop a comment in the Chelsea thread to let them know that this has come up again, 8 years later.

    Liverpool fan: Goal!
Chelsea fan: No way, it didn't cross the line.
Liverpool fan: Ok, well then given what happened, if the ball didn't cross the line, that means Cech is to be sent off and Liverpool are to be awarded a penalty.
Chelsea fan: Hmmmmm let me think about this one actually.

Feel bad for the lad, and even wondered amidst all the stuff with Chelsea if it was true. Hope he gets that sorted with as little permanent scarring as possible. Anyway. Moving on.

Just sent my best wishes to Wayne in the United thread lads, it felt good too. A simple act of sportsmanship here and there amidst all the rivalry never hurt anyone. Long it may last.

Had to check wiki for the exact stats myself. :)

The big facts about how we did in 1984 are easy to remember.

    One league Title
    One European cup
The last in a run of four league cups on the bounce
    Rushie's amazing 47 goal tally

But game stats defo require some aid from wiki or similar. :)

Was going to reply, but you've pretty much hit the nail on the... errr head.

Have a lot of time for Luis for what he did in our run to winning the CL and how well he speaks about us still, but my god did he give me fits of rage with the most erratic (being kind) of moments of play I've seen from any single player to have played for the club. Certainly in the last decade or so.

Likewise 5star but then I got thinking... the pictures weren't long up on FB when it was posted in the United thread. What I imagine is that a few of the lads are a little out of sorts after seeing one of their players like that. Call me a touch soft but I'll excuse them a while to come to terms with the picture before having any notions of sending then my way.

I Might PM one or two of them later actually, I'll let you know.
