In the George Hook interview he claimed that there was a protest outside the courthouse over it and described himself as having been on the run. Bit of a jesus complex.

I suspect he got a ticket, wasn't bothered or forgot to pay it back and then just ran with it as a useful way to claw back some public attention after the end of his halcyon days spent stirring up controversy while the abortion bill went through the Dail.

I assume the local council involved will be refunding us for using the criminal courts and prison service at absolutely vast expense to collect a €2 unpaid parking fee.

    Jailbird John !

If ever there was a golden chance to give the country a bit of peace & quiet by keeping him in there, it was today.

We'll never hear the end of this now.

Couldn't read the article, that retarded Journal.ie site keeps trying to make me download the app. Probably not missing much either, their site seems to be aiming for the Daily Mail retard market.

Did the same in 2011 myself. Refused to pay the TV licence and spent no more than 90 minutes inside. Haven't heard from them since but am prepared to go in again if they come sniffing around. The prison guards where sound and told me they had between 20-30 of these TV licence turnarounds a day and about another 20-30 non fine payments but this was in 2011 so may well be more or less now.

You're still liable for backdated payments.

    That's baffling logic.

    It's fact, not logic

    Nothing baffling about it

It's a pity they don't shave prisoners hair when they arrive at prison. I'd say he'd have thought twice about not paying the fine instead if that was the case.

Thousands of euro, perhaps tens of thousands belonged to the irish tax payer were given up to process this baby ego through the criminal justice system.

This arrogant baby with his little ego. No one tells me what to do.

You spoilt brat. You can have discussions at your book club. You can have committee meetings at your league of twats club. In court the Judge hands down sentence and you don't get to negotiate or discuss. If you're fined you pay the fine.

You're lucky to live in such a forgiving society that indulges inconsequential windbags such as yourself. It's a pity you don't get what you deserve.

Yes, and why was he fined? For getting a ticket perhaps?
And why did he get a ticket? For allowing his parking to expire by 1 minute.

16 minutes he was allowed a 15 minute grace period and he still didn't get back on time, seems fair to me unless you are suggesting he should get a grace period on the grace period.
Should have kept him in for being an idiot.

how long did he leave his fine unpaid for? has he been fined for this before? has he been working with the council to get better parking conditions for the local area?

In answer to all your questions, John is the Rosa Parks, (pun intended), of Dun Laoghaire.
He is campaigning for an end to discrimination against long-haired journalists by the hated traffic-control gestapo.

They should bring back the death penalty for scumbags like these

that sounds unfair! He was on the Hook, therefore he must be an upstanding and balanced member of society.

    (also, awesome punning!)

Just spare a thought for the two unfortunates that had to spend two hours in the same cell as him.

It would be interesting to see if they ever re-offend again.

How can you do business in Dun Laoghaire? .... If I meet someone I can’t start a conversation for fear of being fined."

... and the people of Dun Laoghaire rejoice and praise the local council for the implementation of the system.

I'm sure this thread has run its course, but I've just had a listen to George Hook's interview with John Waters. I can only conclude -- again -- that Waters is an awful fookin eejit, and I wish he'd just fook off and join Kevin Myers in the Independent or wherever that nutcase is now.

George Hook isn't far behind Waters in terms of bolloxology, mind you, if this interview is anything to go by.

Exactly, it is ridiculous that he takes this stand and refused to pay the fine, ridiculous that so much money is wasted on this case and it has achieved nothing.
Non payment of fines should lead to community service of some sort, or having the fine deducted at source. It should be a quick and simple mechanism that punishes the non payment.
Instead what we have in this case is a right pain in the arse journalist taking a stand over a pathetic parking offence, warrants issued and reissued, garda time wasted and a judge and solicitors involved. Not to mention the revolving door at wheatfield.

And both Hook and said PITA journalist think Waters is a "hero". Pathetic.

I hope they send him a bill for the oil for that revolving door! It doesn't keep going around all by itself you know!

On a more serious note though, I agree community service would be far more appropriate and vastly more cost-effective.

I mean, he could have been required to go out with a packet of J-Cloths and some Mr Sheen to shine up those parking meters or wash the parking signs.

Failure to do the community service should just result in a wage garnishment where the fine and accumulated penalties are just taken at source from income or welfare or, for petty fines like that just sell the debt on to a collection agency which would be far cheaper.

Non-payment of fines should not result in prison sentences. It's absolutely ridiculous and a complete waste of state resources and money.

To be fair to Alan Shatter he has been making a lot of noise about changing the system to achieve that. It's just amazing it's taken this long.

What a f**king twat. Thousands of people manage it every day John. If the system was that flawed there would be chaos out in Dun Laoghaire.

There isn't because most people can manage their time properly. It's just one jumped up little windbag that is shouting about it. F**k off and get yourself some real problems.
