From a financial point of view hold your powder dry, Prices will be back allot later in the year. If your low on K you can spread this during Nov/dec/jan depending on demand for next season. look around for free organic P and K for now. Obviously if the deficiency is large you have no better to do only spread grossly over priced fert.

If soil is low in K and you use FYM to improve it how do you know how much it will bring up the K index without testing again

Old man always said a 1000 gallons of slurry was the same as bag of -7-30

9 acres of paddocks cut Tuesday pm, baled and wrapped this morning. Stopped 14-20th July, 40 bales, great quality stuff. With the 40 bales of hay in shed and first cut already done, fodder budget just about on target, if have to house end Oct. Any grazing beyond this will be a huge help:)

Last 10 acres of seconds cut last night. Will be baled tomorrow. Gives us 7 months of silage. Hopefully we will only need 6.

Second cut after arable knocked yesterday. Nitrates still a bit high. We'll ted it today and hopefully pickup in the morning. Crops are lighter than we hoped which reflects grass growth generally around here since it was cut. One burst for 2 weeks but little else since early June.

    Am I mad?

Short on fodder so I've closed off 10ac for a possible 3rd cut. 2nd cut was take last wednesday and it greened up quickly. It got 1,300gal/ac watery slurry and will get 2 bags of CAN this weekend. Could I get 5 bales/ac from it with 6 weeks growth? That would get me out of jail this winter (if it's a normal winter!).

I'd start with a bag of CAN and see how it was going If growth rates were good you could always go in with the second one in 3 weeks if not and weather started to go against you, you wouldn't have nitrates to deal with.

would that be cost effective you are hoping for 50 bales of Silage for around 800 euro. There must be ground out there ready that you could pick up for 30per ac giving you 7 bales an ac.

No your not, I was told I was mad aswell last year and we cut around the 25th of October. Could have sold it for €40 a bale along with the next cut of the ground that was taken the 18 of March. Between the two cut we got more than 10 bales per acre all bit it of stuff around 20ish DM. It was expensive silage but worth its weight in gold last winter.

Neighbor has silage cut today, I might ask him what he is doing with the field until April the 1st. :)
