Used to be a very good hurler in my school Kwame Ampadu was his name....he was also unsusual in that he was the *only* black fella in the school(mid 1980's).
Kwame's brother Colm (or colin) was there when I was in school, the only black guy in the early to mid 90's. Plenty of black lads in o'connells now.

Good call - they aren't renowned for their swimming abilities

People usually continue playing the sport that permeated their home culture. so that's why you get plenty of blacks playing soccer here and why Irish continue to play GAA abroad

Depends as much on nurturing youth training really. The best France team of 15 to 8 years ago was mostly black, yet there are only three sub Saharan African countries with any truly half decent national football teams.

Thats because France robbs all the ebst African players from former colonies - it would be like China robbing all the best European stars - it would make an unreal team. At the risk of making a stereotype the French (2 generations) themselves aren't particularly overzealous in pursuing athletic activities. Plus that French team had Zidane, Henry and Ribery in it. 3 of them would make any team fairly ####in brilliant.

Better facilities in US than nearly every where else. They identify any potential athletes as early as they can and stick them in a regime and then offer them massive scholarships.

If you want to look at a lack of facilities look at Ireland - doe we even have an Olympic standard swimming pool yet?

Limerick has a 50M pool not sure if it complys with olympic standards.

ya the US is miles ahead of every other country facilities wise and you can see the results. but if you live in an area that simply doesnt have the facilities (a standard 25M pool) high scool/college facilities are not going to help you catch the kids that have been swimming for 10-12 years

The only sports that I can think of where black people excel the most are basketball and running of some form. Yes, generalizing, but surely that's what this thread is all about?

Dad's Irish and he's been here since 11 so I'd count them as Irish.

As tanned as a Connemara man I'd say, lots of Spanish blood in them hills.
They're mum's not Irish though, she's from Fiji.

The National Aquatic Centre has an Olympic size competition pool.

Cullen Jones seems to do pretty well for himself on the USA swim team.

Do the O'Halpín lads not count? They're a damn sight more tanned than the average Corkonian.

They're a Melanesian and White mix.

They're a Melanesian and White mix.

They'd still be described as 'Black Irish' though.

Ah, it's only in the last few years we've had any black people to speak of in this country. Give it about 5-10 years and all the kids of current immigrants will have gone through the schools and joined GAA teams.

White people are better at swimming.

Those of West African descent are generally the best sprinters.

It's just genetics. you won't see a black person winning the 100 freestyle at the Olympics, just like you won't see a white man win the 100 on the track.
Obviously there may be some exceptions to the rule.

As regards cycling Yohann Gène has ridden a couple of times in the Tour de France including this year. Think he's the only black rider to do so. There's some of decent black track cyclists as well. Gregory Bauge won two silver medals in the last olympics for France and is a 5 time World Champion on the track, though I think he may have lost one of those for missing a doping test

Therefore I imagine that the reason there aren't many top black cyclists isn't genetic and could be more to do with socio-economic reasons, but not certain about that.

Back to the topic, when Dublin won the All-Ireland a couple of years ago one of the subs was black. There are black players playing at club level and lots at underage level.

I'm sure there'll be more in years to come.

It's only recently that Ireland has had any sort of significant black population,- the same goes for Eastern-europeans, and it's likely that the parents of non-irish kids will be more likely to encourage them to play sports that they themselves are interested in and may have played themselves, which obviously wouldn't include gaa.

Thats what I'm saying even the run-down areas have ridiculous facilities in their schools, albeit their wouldn't be a swimming pool in every school but even 1 in 10 is miles ahead of most countries excluding places like China.
As for facilities I think people like Nairo Quintana show that if you have a passion and the skill then you'll overcome it. There should be enough "black" people with access to swimming facilities in the US that they should have more representation if they were disproportionately good at it.

The whole argument is made on strange assumptions anyway as in boxing are clearly not dominated by any race/region through all the weights. Some weight divisions are clearly dominated by regions ie. right now the Klitschko brothers and nobody is even near beating them despite them being well past their prime. So I could say that Ukranians dominate boxing.

The facts are that 100m sprint etc. are dominated by black athletes but thats such a loose term to apply because many black people of different descents wouldn't be any good at the 100m sprint.

Applying things like speed, fat/slow twitch fibres to other sports ie. soccer might benefit but skill is more important. Cesc Fabregas is one of the slowest players I've ever seen but also one of the best.

Hurling is arguably a lot more skillful than soccer so its a skill based game so no portion of the population would be disspraportionately better than the other as in things like the 100m sprints where its all about genetics and coaching.

golf isn't dominated by black people, irish boxing isn't dominated by black people and irish basketball isn't dominated by black people. Dublin gaa has had black players on its panel. every county in the country would want the best players available colour wouldn't matter. if the sports you refered to above are dominated by black people in America that's irrelavent to this country .....stop stirring it

Black guys also seem to dominate prison populations in the US. Any thoughts on this, OP?

Thats good, I'm not into swimming but I remember hearing a lot about it a few years ago.

Yeah he kind of backs what I'm saying about the Americans identifying very good athletes very early and putting them on the road to compete.

Quintana does have an advantage in that he grew up near the Andes, at high altitude I guess. Perfect for endurance events.

Homegrown Irish sports are just the worst.

I can't see why anyone at all plays them.
