No Black guys playing GAA

How long before the GAA has some top black players.

It's a proven they are genetically better athletes - stronger, fitter, faster etc.

The majority of other spot's out there is dominated by black participants - Golf, boxing, basketball etc.

The same question could be asked about Irish Rugby as well.
Just a thought - will it ever happen?

They are bringing in the black card next season. That's progress.

Because people of African origin still represent a tiny proportion of our population. I wonder why there is few eastern european players. There is hundreds of thousands of them in Ireland, and some of them are seriously built.

I'm not even a GAA fan, and only ever go to a few games a year. Yet I've seen plenty of 'non-white' people playing the game. Granted it's at local level, but they're there, and presumably just as likely to be selected for inter-county teams if they're good enough.

Depends as much on nurturing youth training really. The best France team of 15 to 8 years ago was mostly black, yet there are only three sub Saharan African countries with any truly half decent national football teams.

    What about Jason Sherlock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,292 ✭✭✭BrensBenz

Good question! But whatever about GAA and rugby, I've often wondered, while dominating athletics, boxing, etc. and well-represented in soccer and most other "physical" sports, why blacks don't seem to dominate swimming, a truly "physical" activity, with few restrictions (if any) on participation. Are some sports "uncool" for black kids? If so, why?

Maybe some day, we'll see black faces with Irish accents on the gold medal podiums. Looking forward to that!

When schools like blackrock and clongowes start letting black kids in probably

Not that they are discriminating on the grounds of anything other than wealth of course, heaven forbid

GAA isn't a professional sport where you can buy players from various countries/clubs. Players are all home grown and at this time thr feeder base is still majority white.
Give it 20 years or so I'm sure we'll see more players of Eastern or African decent playing hurling and football.

He's not black though. His father is from Hong Kong and his mother is from Dublin. Eurasian is the term I think.

Mostly down to rural/urban population dynamics. Immigrants generally base themselves (initially at least) in larger cities, where GAA would be weaker compared to the rest of the country.

Used to be a very good hurler in my school Kwame Ampadu was his name....he was also unsusual in that he was the *only* black fella in the school(mid 1980's).

Westmeath minor football team had three African-Irish players in the starting 15 this year. Plenty of lads playing in underage level as well so don't know what the OP is on about.

I trained as a lifeguard for a water-park and we were told that due to higher bone density black people sink easier/quicker. I presume this may be a contributing factor.

There have been many black rugby players in the underage systems, but typically they're only there because they're bigger and stronger than most of the other kids. When they step up to the adult/professional ranks they're suddenly not bigger and stronger than everyone else and their lack of technique/skill is shown up. Same thing happens with dozens of promising young players whether theyre white/black/purple

Show us the scientific proof then? Because there once was a crazy dude called Adolf Hitler, who believed similar nonsense about the 'master race'.

Agreed, there's a few black players in the minors who we might see in a few years.

Maybe they are just not into GAA.
The stands are not exactly full of 'black guys' during matches. Maybe its just not their thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,803 ✭✭✭pappyodaniel

My own opinion is most black lads wouldn't lower themselves to play bogball or hurleyball.

    On a serious note
Ken Early on the most recent Seconds Captains podcast discussed The Sports Gene, a book by a guy called David Epstein (not The Beatles manager) who goes into detail as to why black athletes dominate certain athletic events be it sprinting or long distance.

    Fact.

People think that all Africans are supreme athletes which is false. East Africans are the best middle and long distance runners due mainly to their altitude. Whereas the beat sprinters are West African. The majority of Africans enslaved in the Americas came from West Africa.

its more to do with the facilities required to become a good swimmer tbh. Most Black people in the states would live in areas that wouldnt have decent facilities where as more white people would have access to them this in turn results in far higher amounts of white swimmer at the top levels not including that countries like russia dont have a large black population

Its why you get high amounts of black people playing soccer and American football but very few playing ice hockey. facilities is a huge factor

It's still only a tiny proportion of the population of Ireland. Most of the asylum accommodation is in Dublin, as are most of the support services. Many asylum seekers travel to Dublin from other areas for counselling and therapy.

Your point being? Only a small proportion of Dublin's population is black also.
