I'm not a huge fan of Steve Coogan but I definitely prefer him to Ricky Gervais. I actually don't find Gervais funny at all and could never understand why he got so popular.

I never liked either Coogan or Gervais as stand-ups. But The office and Extras were absolute tv gold, as was partridge (the rest of Coogan's tv was poor though). On their tv output id go with Gervais, the last Alan patridge series I thought was poor enough.

Gervais isn't fit to wipe Coogans boots.

Coogan was doing voice overs and impersonations for Spitting Image years before Partridge. All Gervais has really ever played is himself or Brent.

Take it you never watched Derek?

Coogan is an impressionist as well as creating characters.

Gervais just does character driven work as well as the stand up.

To be honest i'm not sure if either men are bothered as they sit at home tonight with millions in the bank.

I did read the Alan Partridge book "I Partridge..We need to talk about Alan" and it was fúcking hilarious.

Gervais is about as funny as finding out your girlfriend is pregnant.

    By your best friend.

    On your birthday.

Which happens to be your last birthday because you're terminally ill.

What the hell? Now I am totally confused, I thought Gervais was Brent, or was Brent Gervais. I find these reality shows way too difficult to understand.

From watching the stand up the Gervais characters are certainly an extension of Gervais himself mixed in with people he has met.

Compared to Coogan. He is a hard drinking hard sessioning Manc who just had an aptitude for creating a right wing boring conservative sexually repressed oddball character. I remember seeing him out of character 12 or so years ago and couldn't believe it was the same guy. He seems, unfortunately for him, to physically resemble his boring character more now as he approaches middle age without the need for make up :pac:

Coogan is liquid comedy. Much funnier than Gervais IMHO.

BBC 2 are currently repeating 'The Trip' on Friday nights.

A terrific watch & quite a brave departure for Coogan, touching as it does on his dissatisfaction with career, fame and personal relationships.

He's always trumped Gervais for me, though it does appear particularly fashionable to have a real pop at our Rick of late.

Ricky Gervais for me...just for the Golden Globes alone, his monologue was flawless

i ask you who else would have the backbone to rip the p!ss out of Hollywood esp when surrounded by so many movie legends, it made a refreshing change from the butt kissing event that it usually is

Ricky Gervais is more talented, for my money. The Office and Cemetery Junction are both amazing.

Apart from Richard Pryor and Chris Rock, in 80 odd years he was the only host who would be tempted to bring edgy material. Check the list, all the rest were safe bets.

Gervais was also a total kunt to Pilkington in An Idiot Abroad.

He basically bullied the bloke and the only ones laughing was Gervais and the other muppet who created the show with him.

Pilkington was in on it in fairness. No they weren't the only ones laughing - I also laughed my hole off. :pac:

I always thought that. I loved extras and the office, but an idiot abroad just consists if him taking the piss out of a "mate" and doing that really annoying forced laugh of his.

On topic coogan for me. The recent "places of my life" show is alan partridge at his absolute best! Highly recommend it.

Fairly sure Karl is not half as gormless as he's portraying himself tbf. Smart bloke, laughing all the way to the bank.

Coogan without a shadow of a doubt.

I loved Keanu Reeves in Saxondale :D

    Ah here....

The whole show's utterly contrived & Karl's no mug, so I wouldn't go feeling sorry for him.

The show would have benefited from the removal of Gervais / Merchant & their infantile carry on I'd agree. Just send Karl to some particularly interesting parts of the world (Lagos, Detroit, Bogota etc.) - and his take would not only be highly amusing, but he's capable also of some telling observations, oddly engaging interaction and slightly skewed social commentary.

Imagine 'Around the World in Eighty Days' or even a 'Whickers World' type show with Karl at the helm - I think that'd be very watchable.

Stupid question really, how does one judge talent in two contrasting comedians? If you are asking me which one I prefer then I would say Gervais, the Office is possibly my favourite comedy series of all time. I also like Extras and his I think his stand up, particularly the early stuff is brilliant. I like Coogan too but was never massive fan of Alan Partridge.

Saxondale was brilliant, why did they only do 2 series though?

Anyone know if the trip is on netflix? Its a nightmare trying to find stuff on that.

Totally agree. He's brilliant. A fantastic observer with a sort of idiot savant badinage going on.

The BBC in their wisdom didn't order another series. Shocking decision.

I don't think the trip is on Netflix though, most of his stuff was put up after Alpha Papa was released. To be honest, I've never even heard of the The Trip. Good?

There's no way that Ricky Gervais is more talented, in my opinion of course.

Steve Coogan is so much more versatile, Gervais plays the same character in everything, with the exception of Derek.
