an age old question i am sure !!
my friend is visiting me for tea, a knock on the door and a young boy from the other side of the road asks for his friends football back that has been kicked into my friends back garden . She has only asked that boy about an hour ago with the ball to stay away from our front gardens as he was kicking the ball about and just knew he might do damage.

we are chatting and having tea so are in no rush for for her to go home.

does she have to give back the ball ???

we here talking about it and we think no.
so boards friends what would you do ???

    No, probably not.
But if you deny a child sports equipment, you lose the right to shout at your kids for not going outside more.

The ball goes into the garden ONCE in an hour and she is complaining? Give the child his ball back and don't be such a grump.

You don't have to give it back but we'd probably have put somebody's window in if they stole our ball when we were kids.

I'd give the ball back the first time and make it clear that the ball is not to come anywhere near your property. After that i wouldnt answer the door.

When I was a nipper we had to climb over an eight foot wall in a garden, grab the ball, and kick it out into the street before she came galloping out.
Please note: always kick the ball out. Do not hold on to it. :pac:

Our rule of thumb as kids was number of balls not give back time x equals number of eggs at Halloween

So whilst you don't have to give the ball back I suggest you do

this is not the first time and there is a constant issue ! and we just think now the "ball is in our court" !!!

there have been some troubles in the area with a while .
we thought we might have has a visit form a mom or dad by now to be honest !!!

    Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours.

Were you ever young OP? There aren't enough kids playing outdoors these days without you and your friend putting the mocklers on these youngsters

I would think not, if the kid is annoying her by doing it no..Tis her property so sod it she did warn him

Well it's like this. You give the ball back with a smile, and you are the sound person on the road.
You don't give the ball back, or throw a strop, you're the dick on the road.

Now, fast-forward a few years when that kid becomes an awkward disgruntled bored trouble maker... All of a sudden you're their target. Your call.

She's visiting her friend, I think the child has a cheek to be knocking on someone else's door. He's not only disturbing the garden owner, but the garden owner's friend too!

Edit : Tell him to sod off and let you have your tea and chat in peace. He can wait for his ball. Just because his parents give him everything he wants, doesn't mean everyone else in the neighbourhood has to do the same.

I remember when this was all playstations :(

One way to get the kid to move on if to bring out the ball and play soccer with him in the street.

What troubles? Are they ball related?

It seems sad that two adults are debating the merits of not giving a child back his ball. Did you do everything you were told as a child? I doubt the kids are doing it deliberately.

If you don't give it back they might be tempted to put something more unsavoury in your yards.

Bloody lazy nippers. They should be hopping the fence to get it themselves!

If you do tell them to get lost, expect a few nick-nacks at your door and maybe a few eggs on your wall.

I've thought about this some more and, in hindsight, I don't see any other option you have other than going down the legal route. Given that neither a mom or dad has made an appearance, the kid is obviously being neglected. Better the kid go in to a care home now rather than leave them to a life of urban crime

Get him to clean the pool while he's at it-that'll learn him not to kick his balls in your back-gate again.

There was a person who would always keep our ball if it went out his back and still to this day I knick knack his house every night.

Knowingly denying someone access to their property without legal reason is theft.

I move for a bad court thingy.

Kids kicking balls around and knocking on doors to get them back out of gardens, huh? And in summertime and all? Whatever next?

They'll be out running around or cycling up and down next. It'll escalate quickly after that, within months you and your put-upon neighbours will have kids speaking loudly, jumping and drinking cans of heroin.

(Give the ball back and tell them to be more careful in future, ffs)

It's anarchy out there so it is.

Give them back the ball OP, they're kids out playing just like you used to.

And you'll be in for a world of hurt if you don't ;)
