It's hard to recapture that kind of magic though. It was an original title and you, probably like me, were pretty young when you played it. It was an original experience around a time where the whole alien/ufo culture was popular with the likes of x-files on tv. As much as the zombie culture is popular today.

I have gone back to play it on numerous occasions over the years though and it still has the same magic for me at least. It could be just nostalgia but it was an amazing game for it's time. Firaxis did a good job in fairness to them. I really enjoyed the game but it wasn't a patch on the original experience I had and I doubt I will go back for a second play through unless they release new content.

I was in school, and I think not many of my collogues had a clue about it. I agree it was fresh for us, and it probably has a lot to do with the impact it had for me. But not only this, I suppose it combined different game play mechanics and cultural ides in a very new and unique way. I think what really makes it great is how you can tell Mythos Games didn't make many (if any) compromises, save what's imposed by the little resources they, and we, had. You want base building, you got it. You want research, you got it. You want strategy, you got it. You want atmosphere, you got it. Want to defend the earth your way, day or night, you got it. It was just so ambitious; they tried to squeeze everything into what they had to work with, and they didn't care if you didn't like the graphics (which I personally love). I'm glad it touched you in a similar way.

Edit: Not that I'm a game developer, but I imagine they built the game they wanted to play. Not the game they thought we would be willing to play.

Aye. Also, it, and a combination of Panzer General, Steel Panthers and Alpha Centari (Civ was never as good as it for me), ensured I'd be a lifelong strategy gamer and doing my best to bring my son down the same path.

Haswell is so funky. Having messed around with the settings for quite some time, I managed to get 4.5ghz stable, HT off, with a relatively low 1.25v.

What voltages are others needing to maintain similar overclocks?

Does anyone else have a Gigabyte board? Is the BIOS update necessary to implement adaptive voltages? When I set a manual voltage, it doesn't down volt as it should during normal/idle usage.

    Anyways, must sleep!

I need just over 1.25v for 4.5ghz and i think its just about average and nothing special :(

Have you enabled C3 power state and EIST?
Far as i know that should drop volts and multi when idle.
I dont have a giga board to test though.

    I'll check. I'm pretty sure I do.

My friend has a decent chip, stable at 4.6ghz with 1.24v :/

    Lucky fecker :P

I think if that doesn't work you have to use offset.

Offset isn't as stable as manual/adaptive as it is based off a predefined curve AFAIK.

It should work though, no reason it shouldn't :P

Maybe try LLC when using offset to bring the volts up to where you know is stable.

I'll mess around with it after work. I want to get 4.7ghz without hyperthreading on. Sc2 loves that single threaded performance.

How much extra vcore do you need from 4.5 to 4.6?
It should give you a decent indication of how much you will need at 4.7.

What are you using to stress test?

Quite a bit. Not the most optimised 4.6, but I needed 1.32v for it.

I dont think you will make 4.7 on air and not delidded tbh. :(
The chip you have is better than mine but i'd guess you would still need around 1.4v (i'm almost stable @1.43v) which will be to hot imo.

Perhaps, not while gaming though :D And no HT cuts off ~10 degrees. If I can do it under 1.4 (1.38 or something) I might just stick with it.

The IMC on Haswell is far superior to the one on IB and people are managing to clock their RAM a lot higher on it. I'm goin to try my hand at overclocking my RAM too :)

Just dial in the cpu oc first.
The imc is very good alright but running the ram higher can effect your cpu clock so beware :D

Just as a matter of interest, is anyone getting a next gen console? Or are you guys just saving and upgrading your pc's?

I pre-ordered an X1 mainly for Fifa and cod as the number just aren't on the PC. Mite pickup Halo aswell as friends will be on it. Will use PC for other 90% of games tho.

Plan to build an new system after it all settles down. I'm in no hurry to though. Haven't much of a clue if it will be AMD or Intel, but I think AMD are perhaps a little more innovative and unpredictable. Intel just seem to be drip feeding performance and whatever AMD release will probably be more flexible with overclocking etc and will probably pack enough punch to do the job well. I had an AMD system before my current build (Q6600) and I always liked them.

I will be getting an X1 for Halo, but that's a while off yet so I won't be picking it up anytime soon.

Personally don't think I need an upgrade. The jump in graphics on console next gen is neglible. The hardware is more PC than ever so for some of us an upgrade isn't worth it.

Nah, Consoles are way too limited. I see them as little, expensive and weak casual gaming devices. You can get spoiled by PC so easy once you see good framerates and high resolution.
Got PS3 since it's release, plugged in while bored on my crappy 480p TV, with 30 frames and no AA my eyes started bleeding. But I like to use it as an expensive Netflix machine

Haha. I think the only reason I was contemplating getting one was I've zero friends on PC. I enjoy PC gaming a lot more but having mates online does sound good.

A PS3/PS4 is worth getting for Sony exclusives alone. Missing out on too many great games without one, graphics aren't everything.

I'm in a same boat, but I've met some nice people to play with on servers or guilds/clans (depends on a game) that uses TS3.

Yes that is also true, GoW and Dante's Inferno are good examples. Platform discrimination, I tell ya! :)

Yeah PS exclusives are something I do miss. I can get quite a lot of XBox games on the PC (despite owning an XBox, I'm more likely to get my PC to myself than the TV after the kids go to bed ;) ) and I don't have a problem using a controller to play them. Platformers especially work better with one I think.

While were on the console topic is seems the PS4 will pull further away from the Xbone.
Although both upcoming game consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are based on AMD hardware, only PlayStation 4 incorporates hUMA [Heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access] for supporting a shared memory space. This was explained by AMD's Senior Product Marketing Manager Marc Diana to c't [big German IT magazine] at gamescom. This should put the 3D-performance of PlayStation 4 much farther ahead of Xbox One than many have expected so far. AMD sees hUMA as a key element for drastic performance improvements in combined processors. AMD's upcoming Kaveri desktop processors support hUMA as well.

Behind the scenes, c't could hear from developers that the 3D-performance of PlayStation 4 is very far ahead of Xbox One.
