Iptv is always going to be slightly delayed due to the decoding/encoding etc that is done. Same as an HD picture is about 5-10 seconds behind the same SD picture. I can remember in the days I used to sync up BBC radio 5 and a satellite signal there was 4 seconds difference on a SD picture and 12 seconds on HD. If I used a 28.2 feed for BBC radio the delay was much smaller.

Richard Keys tweeted me back yesterday after I said I wished I could view his new sports show on Al Jazeera. He told me to look around that there are ways. So from reading all this thread looks like it is actually possible but only via an IPTV box?

He could have been referring to an online stream from a multitude of sites too I suppose.

Was asked for a few pics so took quick ones at half time.

Any reliable source of IPTV subscriptions to Al Jazeera? I could get by the geo lock on source IP, if needed. I am just a bit cautious about chucking cash at a service I know little about!

I think that the best thing is to subscribe to Al-Jazeera directly

Just went to their site but I can't see prices until I get a local IP! Anyone know the price structure of IPTV from them directly?

You won't get anything from them if you have an ip address that is outside the Middle East. You will have to go via a server based in Egypt mostly to get a sub from them.

There is a very smart piece of technology called SmartDNS from overplay which can help you overcome this. The price for the year of an JSC sub is then about €105 and theres a hell of a lot of football on it for that.

The quality is very good. Mind you I am not claiming that it is as good as Cyfra HD which is what I had for the last two years but it is certainly, much better than SD and quite close to HD.

Was watching it via a laptop today on a 42" and it looked almost as good as the satellite setup but just not quite.

Could you subscribe to Al jazeera and use an iptv box via SmartDNS and show on more than one tv?

To be honest I can't answer that question because I am using a laptop and connecting into to a tv via a HDMI. If you have a good enough computer that isn't an issue.

But as regards an iptv box I am not familar with exactly what they are and whether or not you could use it on more than one tv simultaneously.

What about the audio? Is it possible to choose the audio or is the commentary in Arabic? Thanks

They have two: Arabic and English for both the SD and HD channels for all of the live matches that I have watched so far anyway.

There is no name on the box to be honest
Is there a model number on the underside/back of the box?

I got it as it carries OSN aswell which is brilliant for rugby
Do you get the full OSN package - or just sports?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,627 ✭✭✭Newtown90

Nope nothing mate only the mac address of the box on a sticker and says HD 1080p on the front.

    Just the OSN sport channels.

I find it hard to believe that the picture quality could be anywhere near a HD tv feed.
Al Jazeera have confirmed that the top-bit-rate level for the free channels and +1 to +10 is 2.4 mbps, whilst HD1 to HD6 are around 4 mbps.

I read reports last year of AD sports streams being high quality too so I subscribed and the picture quality was extremely erratic .
Sometimes it was ok other times it was very poor ,at no time was it better than an SD tv feed.
(I also have high end pc's with good graphics cards and decent broadband so that wasn't an issue)

I would advise you to hold off for the time being until you are sure of the picture quality

There have been 3 or 4 reports on Digital Spy from posters stating they are receiving some of the Al Jazeera transponders (In particular the HD ones) from 7.3w on 85cm-1 metre dishes and not just in the south. There is one poster from Liverpool and another from the north east.

If this is the case surely these signals can be received here on the east coast on 1.8m or 2.4m dishes? Or am I being over optimistic!?

    Any thoughts anyone?

I have a direct online sub with them & smartdns entered into my router.

Superb stuff but I'd quite love a box solely for using this service as my lappy is tripe.

    Any ideas?

If I got an official IPTV box via a friend in the Middle East, how difficult would it be to loop it through a VPN?
Maybe PM a reply if you've got suggestions,,

Mod, if this is off limits please delete

All you need is smartdns for that, a VPN won't be required.

I already renewed my al jazeera card for the current season but next year the online subscription is the way to go, 200 EUR roughly a year for both the subscription and the smartDNS is awesome. I just need to find a way to be able to watch the matches from any TV in the house, any idea guys?

I am currently testing an iptv box. Runs on Android 4.2.2 operating system. I installed a custom built version of Android. I also have installed xbmc on it. For €5.50 per month it streams about 20 tv channels, (About 14 sports and rest movies and entertainment) I have the Al Jazeera channels similar to Glenviewjf with Richard Keys. Its not off the shelf product as such, but once built it autoupdates itself.

Because it operates on android you have access to Google play store and all the apps there. So you can view netflix, youtube etc on tv.

As part of XBMC i have access to rte player, tv3 player, icefilms and 1channel and many more....

Not bad for the price. (Approx €100-€120 for Android tv player)
