I don't see a point in offering such a low bid for a two reasons.

    - The bid is so low, it's not even the basis for further negotiation. It's a waste of time as regards actually taking a step to sign the players
    - It pissed the off club, that it is highly unlikely we will get either of them for a reasonable price now that they feel we've acted the bollox with our valuation.

I understand the "don't offer your max price straight off the bat" logic, but f*cking hell, you have to start off with an offer that has some chance of being accepted. Offering significantly short of their worth is counter productive.

Arsenal bidding the United way - offered 10million for Cabaye.

Cabaye is one of the players I reckon we should be looking at as a fall back option to Fabregas/Modric.

Chelsea came in with a bid that was less than what we paid for a 17 year old Rooney. He's now a 27 year old world class player with 2 years left ion his contract yet they thought an opening bid of £22m wasn't insulting?

These low ball bids from clubs aren't that uncommon.

£22m was an insulting bid for Rooney. United have bid the exact same as they did a few months ago for Baines though as well as the Fellaini offer. Don't see much sense in that!

If only, he wasn't perfect either but give me Gill anyday. Fúck this Woodward guy.

He says we can spend £70 million on a player if we need to, then he disappears from the Australian tour on "urgent transfer business", that was a month ago.
Then there was Fabregas fiasco with us offering stupid bids. Now Baines and Fellaini. I don't want Baines and I've got no problem with us bullying smaller clubs over their players but the £28 million bid for both is just dumb. Just plain dumb.

Seriously, get rid of this guy.

Does anyone think that maybe, just maybe, he was working on Ronaldo all along?

Can we not just accept that everybody lowballs. I'd be extremely surprised if anyone involved in the bid thought it would be accepted. You have to start somewhere. That's how negotiations work.

Everyone lowballs, just not by the shear amount we lowball.

I mean £25 million for Fabregas, that's just so far off his valuation it can't even be considered clever lowballing because noone will take you seriously after that. Same with Baines & Fellaini, at least try and make the club feel like they're getting a good deal, don't just offer them a pittance because you can.

Nope, it's embarrassing when we do it.

We're Man Utd, we'll do what we want. Except haggle that is...

But surely you can see the point people are making - there is a difference between lowballing and putting in an insulting offer, a bid that never had any chance of getting considered never mind accepted.

Sure, start at a lower bid than you think will be required but don't be fooking stupid about it.

It would help us out if Fellaini came out and said he wants a move to us, either to Everton or in the press. Then we could talk business. Baines is too nice to do that though i reckon.

    _______

    Chances created last season -

    Baines - 116

    Evra - 24

Going on that alone, Baines would be a great addition. I know it doesn't say much for the defensive side of their games but RVP/Rooney/Hernandez would love that kind of service.

Uniteds attacking play was not funnelled through Evra though, where it was, a lot, through Baines at Everton. You shouldn't be comparing stats like that simply because the way the players were used within their team was completely different.

I could be wrong but doesn't Baines take all the corners for Everton and all the free kicks from anywhere close to the penalty area. I'd like to see how that stat is constructed.

I can see the point, it is very low and insulting. It's a starting point nonetheless.
The players involved will have their heads turned if nothing else.
Chelsea bid for Rooney was insulting to United. Arsenal's original Suarez bid was insulting to Liverpool. It's not that out of the ordinary.

so what do ye think is going to happen in the next two weeks?

I think we bring in Baines and Fellaini, I think it is pretty much a done deal its just a matter of negotiating with Everton over price. They may drag it out till near the end of the window, but if we put in a bid at Moyes old club for his old players I would be very surprised if we don't land them. Although I think that we are looking at other players too, and I would expect a bid for at least one more player, maybe another midfielder.

Or it could just be that Baines is far better at creating. Evra gets forward a hell of a lot for us too, with far less successful results.

They both play left back so comparing them is not unfair in any way.

He takes them all because he's very good at them....

I'm not saying we should dump Evra and sign Baines. But if we do sign Baines, i'm not gonna be complaining.

Moyes will know how keen the two players are to move. He'll also know of Everton's financial situation.

Apparently Everton are still very pissed off with how United/Fergie recruited Moyes so any deal might be difficult.

Indeed - if that is the case maybe a more reasonable opening offer would have been a good idea.

Should have done it the FM way.

Fergie before retiring (Bid 20 million for Baines and Fellani)
Moyes (Yes board this is a great offer, Fellani and Baines are both declining and with this money I've already found their replacements and we can keep the rest of the dosh for PARTY time)

Moyes, joins united and party time starts with Baines and Fellani.

The whole notion that an offer is "insulting" is moronic. Chelsea bid low for Rooney because he wants out of the club and they figure they can get him for cheap. Arsenal offered £1 more than they thought they had to for Suarez because that's all they had to, why would they up their offer to £41m? If anyone knows what Everton's financial situation is and how much they value their players at it's Moyes.

Why is it insulting to try and pay as little as possible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭mrmanunited

I do wonder if these bids are just done to see if any other clubs come out the woodwork and show an interest as well. If we bid £40m off the bat, im sure Everton would make sure they get top dollar see who else is willing to match it, like Arsenal...

I also wonder if these bids could be part of a bigger picture? If we do have other people we are going for, it could show we are willing to walk away for other players (I think im clutching at straws)

Dont understand why they are pissed over it, he was out of contract and planned on leaving.

Everton can confirm that it has received bids from Manchester United for two players. Those bids were immediately rejected out of hand as derisory and insulting.

"The club did not make public these details as it was vital Roberto Martinez’s preparations for the opening game of the Premier League season were not disrupted in anyway."

I don't see any mention of Fellani in there.
I don't see any mention of Baines in there.

From what I can see people are jumping on this as a 2+2=5 situation. We apparently made a bid for two players and it was assumed that it would be two of Everton's best players, ala Fellani and Baines. Seriously for all we know it could be Seamus Coleman and Leon Osman as Everton didn't publicly declare who these two players were. I'm willing to be proven wrong on that regard, but the above quote tells me nothing specific.

I personally don't believe the Baines side of things. Fellani is an obvious choice as he fills a gap in our squad. Baines however doesn't make sense assuming that Evra is staying, and all the signs indicate that he is. Someone like Seamus Coleman makes more sense than Baines does. Or Ross Barkley. I'm not saying these are better choices, I'm saying they make more sense.

On the Woodward front.. Not liking how he is proceeding with things so far.. But it's early days yet. Loving Moyes.

That should be left as Fergie's project. Claims of a seperate budget for Ronaldo and all that...

I never thought it could be so hard to sign a central midfielder. United are the opposite of Bayern Munich which seems to be a magnet for them.

Fellini for close to 30 deadline day or close to it. That's it.

I'm not sure if a deceased Italian film director would add much to our squad. I don't care if he has five academy awards either :pac:

Quiet a strong statement too. They are obviously -

    1) Insulted by the offer

    2) Insulted that Moyes is trying to pick their two best players

    3) Insulted that the bids were made in such a way to turn their heads, instead of actually seeing what their club wants from them

    Woodward can **** right off.

Would they be insulting wigan If they offered money for mc carthy . Or would it be just smart Martinez wanting to work with à player he trusts

Everton going so public now is really strange. we all knew/heard a bid for both players was on the cards last week, but why go so public?
