nobody is being held to ransom, thats just something put out by those who are to lazy to look for other options while a strike is on for a couple of days

What do you propose an old age pensioner does while the bus drivers are throwing a hissy fit?

Closest LUAS to my area is 20 mins walk, or should they pay 20+ quid on a taxi? I'm sure they can go on the Internet and research an alternative option.

Dublin Bus's monopoly does indeed mean they get to hold alot of people to ransom.

The bus drivers are only doing what the OAPs will be doing in a few months time, when they have a tenner a week whipped off them by Miss Burton.

    PROTEST...:D

    Go on the bus drivers.:)

I dont want to pay twice once on the bus and again in my taxes just to keep some greedy semi-state layabouts nose in the trough.

You dont. Where abouts on your pay slip does it say that you have paid for the buses?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,053 ✭✭✭Hilly Bill

They are grossly overpaid, the fact that you rely on ficticious SW rates makes no difference.
Anyway I hope they do strike, because then they will find out how little they will actually get when deregulation happens and they have no jobs and no hope of getting a job becuase they are deemed unemployable due to their selfish actions.

Wont happen , but if it did then prices would go up not down and the moaning would continue on here

At the point where it says "Tax" which goes to the government which pays a subvention to Dublin bus.

I'm almost looking forward to the inevitable day the trolls get their way and the whole country is privatised.

Will laugh my ar*e off when they'll be complaining about bus routes being axed as they're not profitable - timetables cut and fares go through the roof - no free travel for pensioners etc.

How anyone can state that the low wage bus drivers earn means they're vastly overpaid is beyond me and demonstrates the posters complete and utter ignorance.

Irish begrugery is alive and well on boards the sense I get from any of the threads that involve public / semi public employee's is I don't have it so you shouldn't either:rolleyes:

Anyway I'm for the bus drivers - best of luck to ye:D

Firstly, privatisation does not necessarily mean the end to "unprofitable" bus routes. Subsidies would, no doubt, exist where necessary, but would be open to private companies to compete for them. Privatisation means competition and efficiency. It means that the companies that provide the best service (in terms of level of service, price etc) wins and companies that don't lose, rather than a wasteful inefficient state company operated by trade unions that we have today.

With regards the "low wage" that bus drivers earn - again, I ask for someone to provide a link to a reputable source detailing wages/salaries etc as there is a massive range in the figures that have been abndied around in this thread.

Yours would have been a decent post but your first line ruined it.

just because people.disagree with other peoples opinions does not make them trolls. Make no mistake Dublin bus drivers are very well paid and that's why they are striking because they don't want ANYONE touching their monopoly.

Anybody hear during the week that some Ryanair first officers and Captains are earning less than 30 grand a year. Considering the investment in training and the huge responsibility they have and the fact that Ryanair work them to the bone and to the very limit of legal working hours. A first officer in Ryanair could spend years trying to get to Captain and then get paid the same wage. Also the fact that other airlines stave off hiring Ryanair guys.

I think I'd drive a fcuking bus instead.

Ryanair pilots are on an hourly wage not a salary. If they work 40 hours they get paid for 40 hours at x rate if they work 80 hours they get the same rate. Dublin bus drivers work i think 40 hours then they are into overtime. Triple time for bank holidays, turning up bonuses, sick days etc (this is what i have read please feel free to refute this) so yes technically if a Ryanair pilot does not work many hours and a Dublin bus driver does with overtime he would get paid more.

Simple implement Ryanair's terms "get payed for the hours you work", its how most companies work.

It would never happen because if you implement this in one semistate body you need to implement it in all of them. I do think DB needs to rethink the whole free travel pass scheme and also cuts need to be made to bonuses, overtime rates and sick days.

That would be a good start!

Seen a team on inspectors once in about 5 years.

And lots of battered cardboard passes confiscated and people put off the bus. The inspectors rang some hotline for DSP who would verify the pass.

Having inspectors costs money but if gets people paying maybe it will work.

But then the scum on the 40 had the last laugh as the bus was put out of action when the glass door was shattered as a boyo was put off the bus.

Over 800 a year for a tax saver ticket while I'm certain the 40 is full of fake passes. Some suckers pay while some pay nothing....

More for DB management to sort out if they're looking at lost revenue.

Glorified taxi drivers as O'Leary calls them. That's some way to instill confidence in your staff, a lot get stuck in the sh1thole and can't get a job elsewhere.

Ships 4th Officers (Juniors) working for Irish Ferries earn more per annum than a Ryanair pilot ffs.

That said, 91.50 for 30 days is just over 3euro a day for unlimited travel, which is a pretty fair price.

Let's knock that rubbish on the head right now! Here are the equivalent fares from other cities:

    Edinburgh - £40
    Los Angeles - $24
    London - £53
    Brussels - €50

I agree with you that this is partly due to the level of subvention but let's not pretend that DB fares are reasonable, they are not.
