but we don't seem to be in for anyone, and when we are we're unable to close the deal.

i don't understand how we could be left with 2 CB's with 48hrs till the season starts.

    it's a poor show.

    That it is.

It's verging on professional negligence. So much money available to buy and a singular inability to do so.

I've been patiently waiting for signings and this is getting ridiculous.

With due respect. That's not a question, you're just trying to have a go at people I can only assune you consider to be 'opposing Arsenal fans'.

All that said, to answer your extremely petty and divisive question, I can't recall anyone saying that it was 'better to wait', just that going on history it was likely we would have to.

I wasnt having a go at anyone. I just think its folly to keep propigating the end of the window for transfers when the season starts in 2 days. it makes no sense. Some posters in here have said wait until the end of the window to judge. Why? We've had 2 and a half months to strengthen the side. The sutuation is beyond farcical. The transfer market has moved forward but the club are standing still. The value they are looking for just doesnt exist anymore.

As for going by history, this is the first summer Wenger has not spent before the start of the season. Something is wrong here, and I dont think there's anything wrong with trying to highlight that.

Re Diaby, is there any point counting him as a player. if he does make it back then he will off injured soon enough. He's an excellent player on his day but his body is not able for football

I haven't posted in this thread for a very long time but I'm a constant reader.

Like everyone else I'm just completely baffled by the clubs lack of transfer activity apart from getting rid of the dead wood. This needed to happen and really gave a positive signal in lieu of Gazidis saying that the club now had money to spend.

However the squad is now wafer thin and completely in adequate to compete on multiple fronts for the coming months. I even go as far as to say we must have the fewest amount of first team squad members of any club in the Premier League as things stand! Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I realise the club are trying to add to the squad judging by the names of that have been linked (Suarez, Gustavo etc.) but so far none of them have materialised and probably won't.

Its impossible to know the real reasons for this. I do not believe anything I read on twitter as its both the greatest and worst tool for conveying information known to man. The most reputable sources seems to get things wrong just as much as they get things right. You just can't tell whats truth or fiction unless the club themselves are the ones saying it.

The club must strengthen before this window is out and I'm completely confident they will. But I'm resigned to the fact that it will be squad players brought in and probably only one who will go straight into the first team.

If you look at the squad I think Wenger has his first choice in mind for each position already apart from a striker. Hence the pursuit of Suarez.

But injuries are already ruling these players out and its a glaring sign of things to come.

    Wenger has to buy.

I'll do my best to answer your question by stating my opinions as one of the more optimistic posters here.

I've said wait till the end if the window many times.

This isn't necessarily about running the rule over Wenger's competence though. It's just that people in here are transfer starved and have been freaking out for months now.

My point has always been 'look, freak out when it's all over and we've signed no-one'

That doesn't really align itself with 'Wenger's doing an awesome job', it's just there's no point in spending summer on boards going batsh1t mental.

For me, Wenger's big time playing with fire. I'm sure he feels he can justify everything but to the average fan who knows nothing of his transfer plans, it's been a nightmare summer.

To cone out of this with any credit we'd need to drop zero points in the first few games, qualify for the CL handily enough and then sign Suarez, a competent DMF/CMF and a backup CB.

There hasn't been a failure yet but he's seriously playing with fire and backing himself into a corner in terms of his relationship with the fans, and I'm sure st this stage the rest of the board.

If we drop points, fail to get into the CL or fail to land who must surely be our last couple of targets, he's in big trouble.

All that said, my advice to wait till the end of the window is simply that it won't be resolved until then so it's not really worth the endless hours of negativity.

But on the glass is half full note ...

If we won our first few simple enough games and injuries don't cost us, and then sign well, I'd guarantee that most of this thread would go back to saying 'he's our stubborn intransigent old codger'

The sooner Wenger goes the better, protect some of his legacy.

Disaster of a window. All huffing and puffing in May when we got Top 4, 2 days before the first game of the season and we've done nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,141 ✭✭✭Santi101

Wait until June, players are on holiday.
Wait until July, when the window opens(despite numerous clubs buying before that).
    Wait until the Emirates Cup
    Wait until the CL qualifier.
    Wait until deadline day.
We keep our powder dry for January.
Judge at the end of the season.

Always some bloody excuse with us. Spurs must be laughing at our failure to strengthen. We've given them a window to get at us again.

So Wenger goes and then some alright manager takes his place who will instantly have the power to convince the Arsenal board to take a different approach to running the club?

I don't think that will happen.

Rightly or wrongly I think most Arsenal fans believe Wenger has the final say on financial dealings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,333 ✭✭✭bad2dabone

if a new manager comes in the board will have to back him with transfer funds. something there, according to the board, is an abundance of.

In fairness they will only be in a position to laugh if Bale stays. Hats off to them for strengthening and all but if he leaves that's a big blow to them.

don't post here much but do check in on the thread frequently. I ,like virtually all arsenal fans, am extremely frustrated by our lack of inactivity in strengthening this window. I know there is still time to do business, and they probably will, but it is becoming quite infuriating at times. reports now emerging that gustavo has chosen ahead of us. why is this? they've offered more money? we, once again, couldnt agree a fee with bayern? who knows. but if true, and he opts to stay in germany it's another slap in the face for us. no one knows the ins and outs of how we operate behind the scenes but something has to be inherently wrong. we've lost out on bender, higuain and now probably gustavo. we were very strongly linked with bernard, and whether a bid was made or not is unconfirmed but he has gone to shahktar. the nauseating pursuit of suarez appears to be ending with another unnsuccesful attempt to secure a player. reputable sources have confirmed the pursuit of all these players as well as capoue last january. im mainly just venting as i simply cannot explain it and it's the same story every year. wenger has said himself there are very few quality players available but to suggest our team can compete for the title without significant investment is ludicrous. the pressure has been heaped on wenger through gazidis and co expressing the size of our warchest and capabilities in the transfer market. poerhaps there has been a breakdown in comminication between the parties. i think the likes of suarez, rooney etc are unrelaistic targets and the squad could have been improved dramatically with other lesser high profile players, notably higuain. i have a lawyer friend in london whose firm represented arsenal at one point and he has confirmed to me the long suggested idea about wenger's incredible stubborness. he had worked on deals in the past for the likes of walcott and stated wenger is involved every step of the way and can be difficult to work with at times. even in trying to sell deadwood players at the time, like awuso abieye (who?) aw will try get every last penny out of a potential buyer. anyway, where do we go from here? we are mow linked with michu and dzeko and we wont sign either of these players either. the saga continues

The board is not the problem this Summer. Wenger is.

Did Gustavo make his bastarding statement yet telling he's going to Wolfsburg?

    At last we signed something!!!

Does it not seem like Kroenke may be trying to sell the club? Its very profitable, manageable debt and marketable. The only people making money atm are the shareholders when they receive their dividend.

A football club is meant to be about football. I understand the business part but when the main source of providing income is the team competing at a high level, it makes no sense not to spend extra money on the team. CL football was worth £35 million to us last year (I think), so why can't Arsenal justify putting the boat out and maybe overpaying for someone by a few million. I would rather pay an extra £5-£10mln for the likes of Suarez or other players and get the job done now. If we don't get CL football the top players won't come near us, making getting back into the top 4 even harder.

The squad must be somewhat demoralised by the lack of transfers. We are the only club that seems to delay on every signing!!! I know ManU haven't signed anyone but at least they have a squad. Even if we magically signed someone today, there is no chance they could start this week if they are from outside of the EPL. they would have to integrate with the team, style of play, get to know players running lines etc.

Maybe just change the badge from Arsenal FC to Arsenal Plc!!!

No point in being active when your not going to finalise anything.

Fortunately Suarez will have signed a couple of days before. He'll have come on and scored the 5th in our standard 5-2 against Spurs.

For jacking off when Wenger announces Suarez, Fabregas and a clone of 1998 Zizou?

Have we decided to appeal the ban before he even signs?

Apparently Wolfsburg had a press conference and said they were interested but nothing is concrete. Apparently.
