    OH MY GOD!

    Can't believe what's just happened.

Might go for a walk to celebrate.

    On a high!

Rutherford out of the Long Jump in qualifying.

Recovering from injury. Lost sponsorship deal. Splits from manager and girlfriend.

A case of Olympic success going to his head?

More likely a case of having a torn hamstring.

Great interview with Heffernan, delighted for him!

Lovely story about a session with his son Cathal, that he ran at the end of one rep, Cathal asked him if his leg was sore or something, Rob said no, and Cathal says that if you do that in Moscow, you'll be carded, and if you do it today, I'll be carding you! Bear in mind Cathal is 8 - just showing the dedication of the whole family to the cause.

Cathal is one to look out for, broke one or two records at his age group this year already - think it was long jump of the top of my head!

In fairness, he should never had been sent. He wasn't fit and still carrying an injury. Tomlinson should have been sent instead, Rutherford was sent because he was one of the poster boys of the London Olympics, Tomlinson should feel properly aggrieved about this.

Fantastic attitude as well about London - lot of people saying he was disappointed, but that wasn't the case, he went out and performed to his maximum there - like he did today.

Not sure how much was covered on here about the British selection policy for the championships, but there was a lot of coverage in the UK with the policy, and the fact the selections closed a fortnight before official selection. Can't recall names, but there was a few athletes that would be v disappointed to lose out

Brilliant news to start the day, what an achievement. Pity RTE couldn't show any of this.

I was in absolute bits watching it live, tears streaming while jumping around my laptop, and I'm the same watching it back.

It's worth remembering he was representing Ireland over there, not Cork! ;)

Rob Heffernan, Ireland World Champion 50KM Men's Walk, but more important, heeeess from Cairrrkkkkkkkk :P

For one city to produce two world champions, and the same area of Cork that Jimmy Barry Murphy and Denis Irwin came from, not half bad ;)

Wonder what D'Arcy will say to that after his certificate comments last year when Rob came 4th

World Champion is a fine achievement, but let's not go comparing him with Jimmy Barry Murphy just yet.

Was a kinda saracstic comment iirc that since Rob didn't get a medal, did he get a certificate for coming fourth?

4th in Olympics and 1st in the world in space of a year is pretty dam impressive in any sport.

"What was my time?" "You missed National record by two seconds." "Ah I'm some ****ing eejit, waving away to the crowd the last kilometre".

    Brilliant!!

Ah to be fair to D’Arcy, he’s been a great supporter of both Rob and Marian over the years. I don’t think he meant anything by the comment other than making the point that fourth is the worst place to finish.

That is, you get nothing, nada, for coming forth. Not even a certificate despite missing out on a medal by seconds.

    Some great quotes via https://twitter.com/denners87

“What was my time?" "You missed National record by two seconds." "Ah I'm some ****ing eejit, waving away to the crowd the last kilometre".

What were you thinking entering the stadium?" "I was looking at myself on the big screen, going 'Jesus I've some tan. I look great"

"Fluent English speaking media rep just asked me to translate Rob's press conference, which was in English into, ehm, English. Gotta love it."
