No problem with Westwood here at all. If people went to watch him on course and started volleying abuse they'd be arrested, so why should they be allowed do same thing on twitter? only thing i've a problem with is bragging about the money he's making, that's never classy. Reminds me of the story i once heard of a certain irish football, not overly blessed in the brain cell department, waving a big wad of cash at a bunch of rival football fans in a car park.

    Agree,

But not the time to be going on about all the money he has.

People think sports stars are spolit brats who live in an unreal world.

He hasn't helped the the case for them.

Bad luck for Lee, because it has gone into mainstream media. Meltdown they are calling it.

I think the homophobic nature of some of his tweets will prove more troublesome tbh now the mainstream media have picked up on the story.

Totally agree re. the earnings gloatings, and also have a certain sympathy with him.
You can understand his utter frustration, after the hard work and build up to another seasons Majors ,but Think it must have finally dawned on him last night - that he simply does not and will never have it 'on the greens' to get over the line in a major.(so he's drowned his sorrows)
But has def let himself down, by not having a thick enough skin, to not react to the twitter trolls, if you have thousands and thousands of followers, then there's bound to be a good few a***oles among them.
After last nights performance ,he was bound to get a fair amount of negative comments - End of the day, he's let himsef down by biting back!
Still a great great golfer and wish him all the best going forward :)

Have to confess only scrolled briefly through the stuff westwood posted and didnt see much by way of any homophobic ranting, or is my PC antenna too old school still??
Saddest part for me is so-called mainstream media jumping all over this like parasites and getting a free days work out of it, piggy backing on Twitter non-stories is half the reason the mainstream media is dying in the first place

This makes a mockery of the interviews he gave to Sky after the first three rounds where he was trying to come across as easy going and unperturbed as regards the majors. And then the commentators were all going on about his relaxed approach to life as if he'd found inner peace or something. There's just no excuse for twitter trolls and some of Lee's responses were witty, but a lot of them revealed his true frustrations with his own game.

Looks like Lee is just a bridge too far for Dr. Bob's powers.

    Lee "The Anti Bob" Westwood.

@WestwoodLee: Sincere apologies to my sponsors and true followers for my earlier comments .
It was out of order and out of character ,Westy .

Did you automatically ignore the words "true followers" in order to bolster your point?

Some of the posts on here are about as cringeworthy as Westwood's tweets.

No pity for him from me, guy has a serious chip on his shoulder.

No I didnt but I find it bizarre that he would even need to apologise to his sponsors .This is a recent trend and one I find odd.

He could have just addressed it to his true followers.

Bizarre that he would apologise to sponsors that pay him millions each year to promote their brands!?

Effectively they're his employers, woud you not apologise to yours if you were in his shoes?

Dear God, nothing worse than having to apologise after getting the hook from the money men, how embarrassing for him.

Haven't seen the tweets, but he's always seemed to be a bit of a contrary git in interviews, strange how he's forced on the golfing public as the one who we'd all love to see win, well no, he seems like a bit of a wanker actually.

Heard Gary Murphy on the radio describe Lee Westwood as probably "full of mashed potatoes at 3am this morning" :pac:

I loved his comment about Montgomery (who?) but therein lies a certain irony. Very similar careers full of wasted opportunities and both unable to get over the line in the big ones.

The Sky commentators come out with an awful lot of nonsense at times. On Saturday night, they were considering Steve Stricker as possibly the best ever player not to win a Major! They said he had a real knack of being in the right place at the right time and was sure to be right there on Sunday. Sure enough he was nowhere to be seen in the final round which wasn't a surprise as it's 15 years since he last contended on the back nine on Sunday in a Major.

Sure when Rory got to -3 again they reckoned he wasn't out of it.

That was while Dufner was at -10 and bogey free for about 27 holes.

"Who?" As in who is Montgomery. Pure class considering how similar their careers are turning out to be.

Westwood wasn't very enthusiastic about Rose's win in the US open when he was being interviewed at the British Open - reluctantly said he was pleased for Rose but that it didn't inspire him. You won't often see Westy congratulate another player on Twitter either and he hates to be criticized as we saw with his snub of Monty ! A major chip on his shoulder methinks !!!

    what a ridiculous post.

his true followers are worthless without sponsors.
of you made a tit of yourself in work and embarrassed your company, would your priority be to apologise to your employer or your mates?

I've noticed that about Westwood alright. In general, he seems to be a pretty decent guy. A bit of a no-nonsense approach but very affable all the same and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.

But on the other hand, he came across as a bit of a bully at times in his dealings with Rory McIlroy. I also thought it was a bit off to drop Billy Foster when he got his knee injury.

He's probably just one of those guys that is a lovely fella 99% of the time but who has a different side of his character that comes out from time to time. Unfortunately, he showed that side of himself in quite a public forum!

meh no big deal. I'm sure he is sick to death of people commenting on his game and why he can't win majors. You can see in interviews the last few months/18 months he is sick of it. There is only so many bull**** nicey excuses you can give, before you kinda feel like telling everyone to **** off.

Westwood was one of the 1st people to congratulate Clarke on his Open win a few years back.

Golf is not a team sport, Ego is not only part of the game it is needed to be the best so the above IMHO is meaningless, so what if he doesn't congratulate other players after he misses out again. The guy is a class player who has been in the mix allot and I for one hope he wins one if only to shut people up.

Also with his Twitter rants that shows a human side to him, he is not a robot. Have you never said anything you shouldn't have?

True, I can relate to Lee, any man should be able to relate to him....

The missus is forever asking me to keep the house tidy!
A lot of the time I just don't feature, it's a lost cause from the onset.
But some weeks I'll make a good attempt at this, hwever come Sunday, the house is like a bomb zone...
These are the weeks that are hard to accept, the stars were aligning (once again )
I could be doing great up until Saturday, then she might leave the house for a few hours but somehow on her return, I will have managed to have the place destroyed.
Sometimes, the place turns into a tip without me even leaving the couch!!!
It's crazy, but alas, it seems to be out of my control.

I know I've got the ability to keep that house tidy, but it just hasn't clicked for me yet!

It's quite frustrating to be constantly reminded about my failings or asked when do I think I'll eventually succeed, but by and large I cope fairly well during the interrogations that follow....
"I'll try to do better, I owe to to the fans..." all that kinda crap that will be trotted out

On the other hand, sometimes I just lose it and have a blow out at 3am after beaucoups de Pints

It's ok Lee, I hear ya barking.
    I've made those embarrassing apologies
I may not have earned 2 million this year, but we're under the same mental pressure

    ;):D

He blew up, he's a human, that's acceptable.
He has apologised to those he needs to... the world moves on

A sports person needs sponsors or else his fans become worthless. Ok .

Nobody is stupid enough to think a person won't whore themselves around for big bucks, without them you can still a make a tidy sum and have fans.

what good are fans to Lee Westwood exactly?
well being popular with fans make him win or will it make him more likely to get sponsors?

the comparison is apt.sponsors pay Westwood.
    fans don't.
