Moromons don't imbibe caffeinated drinks so by not inviting them in for tea Irish people are actually respecting their religion!

I worked with a mormon guy who told me this. I pointed out to him that the chocolate and coke he consumed both had caffeine. :D He was stumped.

What's the point in asking them in and wasting their time ?
How's that a courtesy to them?

Their goal is not simply to convert everyone they meet, much of the time they'd just be happy to make others aware of their church to combat what they see as a widespread misunderstanding surrounding their beliefs.

Although, as much as they might deny it, the Book of Mormon is a racist and bigoted text.

    It is.

It's worth noting that I'm an atheist.

Do they not essentially believe that their salvation is achieved by converting souls to Mormonism? So they're here to save their souls.

Of course they'll be polite if you ask them in for a chat, so will the guys who sell Eircom alarms etc at your door. However at the end of the day they're all hoping you'll fall for the sales pitch and they know that people lonely enough to ask them in for a chat are probably low hanging fruit. They'll be hoping you just need a soft soak and a bit of friendliness before you see the light.

i just think that there isnt a bad bone in their bodies, they arent there to push there religion on anyone, but maybe they are told to " spread the word"
i mean they deserve a bit more respect than a slam in the door kind of mentality

Yes, ultimately they want to steal save your soul, but they also want to educate people about their church as they don't have the best track record when it comes to PR.

Making people understand that they're not the racist pseudo-Christian cult that they're often portrayed to be will benefit them in the long run.

Before you win souls you must win hearts and minds.

They come uninvited to people's houses where they preach about their religion. That, in my mind, is pushing their religion on someone. I wouldn't literally slam the door in their face but I'll say what I have to say to get rid of them.

Yep, they also 'baptise' the dead.

Speaking to a man with a masters in Theology he told me that Mormons out of all christian religions dont lose faith as when they go from door to door for 2 years they see nothing but rejection. And then living in the middle of nowhere in Utah with no fun doesnt seem as bad.

Personally I have no time for that "religion" as if you read about its beginnings and founder the one thing that comes to mind is BS. Plus the church openly spread hate against gay people only recently stopped spreading hate against "the blacks".

Heres another thing from the writers of South Park the funnest musical I have ever seen :)

i no im gonna get slated here
    its ok
im pissed and ready for it, anyway they knocked on my door today and out of boredom and curiosity i invited them in, i told them i had no interest in their religion but i was open minded in what they had to say. jesus when i asked how many times they got invited inside for a cup of tea or in my case a can of "soda"
i was shocked to hear that one of the guys wasnt ONCE invited into an irish house in nearly 6 months,
give these poor lads a break. they have to go on some misssionary duties for 2 years of their lives to some weirdo country, the 2 guys i had were from utah and new zealand, they arent any harm to no one, they dont look for money, they are doing it because they want to do it
dont slam the door in their faces, treat them with respect and give them an irish welcome.

what do you do when you get the guys with the suits and the big badges selling the bible to you

D'ya know what.the next time they call im gona do the same as you..lads..i dont want to listen to your waffle but would you like to come in for a cup of non denomonational tea?

Ah yeah I agree with you completely, they always seem nice, and they do honestly believe they're sharing something wonderful with you.

I just personally feel I am being more respectful by politely telling them I'd only be wasting their time conversing with them about Mormonism. I am friendly and nice about it though.

I knew a guy who was over here on a Jehovah mission once and he was lovely. He never mentioned anything about his faith in the 2 years I knew him, I only realised about it one day after 20 months of knowing him when I was mid way through my "sorry but my souls not up for grabs" speech at the door to some jehovahs when I noticed he was the quiet one in the back.

That was an awkward moment I must admit. "I'm sorry, I'm just not interested...oh...hi... what are you doing here?...ohhhhh you're not here to see me,you're ummm doing this....that's umm great ....I didn't recognise you with your suit on there haha...but am yeah still not interested...but see ya later!!!" *cringe*
We never mentioned it again and he remained lovely.

i didnt see any harm in them anyway, they were 2 very interesting people. one of them from new zealand and the other from utah.
yes of course they tried to tell me their word of God, and i listened out of respect, but i can tell you i asked alot more questions and talked alot more than they did

I agree 100%! Loved how the Mormon church had 3 full page ads in the programme "seen the show? now read the book" :D

Yeah we all watch South Park

No we don't. I'd rather convert to Mormonism than watch it, it would be infinitely more enjoyable.

I used to post on an American site before I discovered Boards. There were several Mormons there and the only real issue I had with them was that because it's a very conservative religion they were all naturally Republican Party members or voters. As a result they had a very "Fox News" view of the world and there was no way you could ever convince them that anything remotely liberal was OK. Apart from that they were a nice bunch, I even met up with one of them when I went to the States on holidays.

They don't drink tea, unless it's herbal, because it's got caffeine in it.

ive walked along the road and numerous times ive seen these people and said to myself ok lets **** over to the other side of the road just in case i get accousted and have their religion pushed on me
now in hindsight im sorry i gave themm the evil eye or sprinted accross the road tactic. fair enough i wouldn be giving them an open invitation either
i guess thats too late now tho

but ^ it's not too late for the next bunch you see :) Mr. Power

My lad was one of those boys. I don't agree with much of their history, but its not an easy task those missionaries undertake...
...and some can be pushy while others are not.

Sounds like a pyramid scheme and if the whole world was mormon those last to be converted would be fcuked with nobody left to convert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,678 ✭✭✭jjbrien

You know next time they knock on my door im gonna read them the The God Delusion: Richard Dawkins :D wonder could I sway them from their religion or instead of me taking their book ill give them 2 of the dawkins book ;)

Pretty much by the sounds of things. Individuals have "baptised" dead people to fulfill quotas.
Mormon heaven is all booked out.
