Do you not use sandbags delaval around the edges??

No those tyre mats will seal very well as it settles

I hope there are no mice and rats reading this forum. They will be up to go winter camping with you if they see those nice fluffy bales of straw spread on the pit for them

All the mice around here are blind.
This is an out farm and the bales were out in the yard annoying me and I threw them up out of the way

Why is there such a big lump on the right hand side delaval ?
Will you be opening it again soon or would you be afraid of the air getting in where the grass is peeping out ?

Don't know if you can see in pic but there is a roof on this pit and I ran out of head room.

Bit peeping at the bottom not too bothered it will settle

I'm sure this will qualify me for dumb post of the day but what's a "tyre mat". I've zoomed in and everything and all I can see are small tyres which BTW wouldn't last pi**ing time around here before the cover was doing a grand job covering some un-cut silage in a neighbours field.

Look closely and see how they are bolted together. Easy horse them up with loader or two horses of men!!

An hour sweating with the fork would have taken the worst out of that lump and made it respectable :P:P:D

    I was wondering.

Must be a lot of work making them.

Truck tyres all the way here. Throw them up 10 at a time with the loader, easy to lay them around then.

We have used them in the past but were a pain in the h*le to roll up and stretched sheets too much and held too much water and a pig to move and dangerous on icy polythene. Still use on sides though

sure any half-daycent loaderman would tell you that you should always have the sides of the pit higher than the centre so that it's easier/safer to pack it right to the edge! Isn't that right Delaval??;):p

Tru dat I think it lets the water runoff down the middle too and keeps it from soaking down the walls

God great shape to those stan, even the edges, off short stuff. What's the secret... are they chopped?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Juniorhurler

54 acres in the pit now between both cuts. Temporary cover on for the night. Assault on the covering starts in the AM. All in dry and in great order. Grass covers have got a bit ahead so hope to gather about 40 bales as well, maybe in about a fortnight.

Broke my bale lifter this evening!! Things were going so well too! Aah well it was only about 20 years old! Have a good neighbour so I'll get the rest of the bales in tomorrow.

Same happened me last year! Those handlers made 15-20 years ago just weren't made strong enough for chopped bales!!
