Actually, I used am xml builder a lot, to get my other formats working, didn't worry about the screen shots, more important that I could access the infernal games!
I did have fun getting the Cave games and art integrated, just a matter of putting the right art with the right filename into the right folder.
I may have had this knowledge surgically removed afterwards, so I can't try to "improve" things and bollock it all up.

Gonna have to go out there and say Ketsuipachi is one of the best I've played! the scoring system is unreal! I think its only on the jap DDP version.

Anyone heard of a side scroller in the style of rtype called Rezon?

Checking out some vids, looks great.

Nasty and tough R-Type clone, I had a hard time with it as you have to memorize most of the later levels to get anywhere .
Endless repeating loops of music got on my nerves, never played it again

Don't think there ever was a console port released .

    Just registered at pcenginecjfshjuverhblop0fdbko!

Spent most of the train journey trying to remember what games I actually have. :o

46 out of 110 STG's isn't a bad start! Anyone else registered there? It is an eye opener when you try to go through stuff!

    http://www.pcedaisakusen.net/2/33/575/show-user.htm

Should be 111 STG's though as I don't think Dino Force is listed. Though there is only one known copy in existence afaik so I guess it's not worth adding?

What on earth is an STG? :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭STG.Otaku

...talking of Dino Force, here is a video of the prototype. Not sure if this guy is the original owner of it. It was for sale earlier this year for €10,000 so it may be as I remember the original clip was about 30 secs long...

The original acronym for shooting games (ShooTing Game aka shi-yu-ti-n-gu gaemu) which originated in Japan. We call them SHMUPs but STG was coined before that term. :)

Christmas prezzie decision. Gleylancer, Nexzr & Rayxanber III, Sylphia or R Type III and Battle Mania?

Nice read. Is Ikaruga really considered the poster child for the bullet hell genre though? Surprised if that's the case. DoDonPachi or another of the Cave games sure, or Garegga etc.

I like to think Batsugun was the first to be considered Danmaku .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,947 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

Yeah. Dont get the Ikaruga reference either bit im not too familiar with that game or its history.

The article does refer to Batsugun alright

I definitely still love CRTs but I'm hearing great things about the Micomsoft Framemeister. At 500 bucks there's no way I'm going for one but I'm sure something aproximate will be available in software for emulation. Easier than modding a NES or PC Engine for RGB at any rate. When you're sitting 8 feet back from the TV it doesn't need to be perfect. It's hard to capture these things in youtube videos you really need to see it in person.

Batsugun is the one I always heard name checked as the birth of bullet hell. It's a bit of an arbitrary subset of shmup genre anyway. It's like trying to pinpoint the first game that's a shmup and not a shooter.

My Framemeister landed in Dublin this morning...and got sent straight to customs! :(

Got the JP <> EU SCART adapter and YUV D Terminal adapter and an Iiyama LED monitor to go with it. :D

Love CRT's but I lack space for them now so this is the preferred solution for me. I now have no more CRT's. Doubt I will get another one now. The end of an era for me personally. :(

Oh and Batsugun is excellent. I could never get the PCB back then so picked up the Saturn version which is pretty much perfect. Plus you get the Special version too so no need for extra ROMs etc.

Awesome game. Probably my 2nd fave Toaplan game after Dogyuun!!. :)

I'm getting there myself at this stage. Someone here, I think it's Monkeykube, showed pics of a hardware scanline setup he has running on a flatscreen & the results were amazing. Enough to convince me I think

Yep. The Framemeister convinced me. Tobias and Shaun did superb reviews of it on their respective sites. Shane McRetro even went gooey over it and he is a CRT stalwart.

Totally convinced by it. The VP20 I am keeping for the front room to deinterlace 1080i Sky broadcasts, Blu Ray etc. The Framemeister is leaps ahead of it for working with my HDPVR2 for capturing too.

CRT will always be the original and best, but the Framemeister is so close now that aside from physical aspects it would be difficult to tell the two apart in terms of display output so to speak.

Framemeister is indeed gorgeous, but I can't justify the price.

I'm happy to continue using CRTs at the moment - but like the SLG3000 and it's brethren, it's making me less afraid of our CRTless distant future :)

To anyone lacking CRT space and without the fundage for something like the Framemeister, do consider one of those Commodore PC monitors. It looks tiny at 14 inches beside my 29 inch monster, but the picture quality is gorgeous and works grand as long as you're sitting close to it. Has a very small footprint.

(Would really be fantastic if you had an PC/Office desk setup and had a little retro gaming corner :))

I've got an old Commodore 1702 monitor(I think that's the model number) and the quality is damn good considering its age.
I'll be picking up a Framemeister in the near future as it seems the business. And at about €250 euro its dropped quite a bit closer to reasonable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,732 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

I down to only 5 CRTs now :(

Agreed with those Commodore 1084 monitors, absolute class in a small form.

    The Framemeister is €250 now?

Expensive in real world terms, but for the space saved and the quality, that's far more reasonable.

    I'm at 4 crts myself.
She Who Must Be Obeyed asked why there was a wooden block in front of the 'tated tv... she never asked why the tv was on it's side.... I expect a "Fr Ted did kick me up the @rse" moment any day now...

Your games room is looking great, loved the little 'tate Dreamcast station you've got going on.

Actually I had a great moment there while downstairs playing Metal Slug on your AWSD. Could hear Under Defeat playing upstairs in the background. Almost felt like an arcade :D
