If you measure the civility of a country on how gays are treated not many countries would make that list all all. Of the top of my head - Sweden, Canada and Israel.

No, you've plucked that entirely out of thin air.

Possibly due to defensiveness at people criticising you for equating a public video of abuse of a gay teenager including pouring urine on him, verbally abusing him, kicking him, a video which cuts out just as they seem about to do more to him, with schoolyard bullying.

Have you ever been bullied? That is what it looks like, why are you downplaying bullying?

My point is that being raped by a grown man would have been worse, not that any of it was ok.
I still get the feeling no one wants to admit that they would have prefered a 15 year old to sleep with an adult.
There's plenty of indications that the entire event was a setup, posters a couple of posts up outline this . As a person who was bullied, I would classify it as torturous and it has scarred me for life. Just as this event has done so for this boy and he was coerced into a public shaming and then they lobbed it onto the Internet so I will stick by calling it torture.

By going on and on about it being the lesser of the two evils and and rambling about it not being torture. You're even denying that there is obvious homophobia involved. You are downplaying it!

Read the thread we thought he was going to be raped.

No, you thought he was going to prostitute himself. Very different.

It's statutory rape, yes. But he was evidently quite willing to do whatever he was supposed to be doing.

To also take the view they were doing a good thing would have not only required you to ignore the previous posts in the thread explaining what was occurring and how they were spreading the information, but would have required you to think that do gooders surrounded teens, threatened them with violence, poured urine on them and posted it all on the Internet for the world to see out of the goodness of their heart.

I don't think you are actually that stupid.

They've made it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. Possible fine and or up 2 weeks in jail.
2 Dutch men promoting homosexuality to russian teens have already been arrested when they were caught with teens.

All but 1 Russian minister voted against the law and it's a popular law for Putin as Russia is a conservative society.

They werent "promoting" homophohia. From what I remember they were asking people their views on it. Which was enough to land them in jail.

The Russian law effectively treats anything that doesn't condemn homosexuality as "promoting" homosexuality.

A rainbow flag is "promoting". I think I read recently a teacher or parent telling people it's ok to be gay can land then in jail.

I think it also covers any sort of public display of affection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭floggg

Yea they do apparently hence the Dutch guys were locked up for a few days.

Basically the law in Russia is now if you want to promote lbgt issues don't do it in the public and don't do it with anyone under 18.
The Winter Olympics are really going to test the law. You can't be "out" in public.

The World Cup in Qatar will be another test, 6 years in jail if your seen in public being gay.

    No, they don't.

The law is premised on the illogical idea that it can be "promoted" in the first place.

You're either gay or not. An advertisement or well delivered speech isn't going to suddenly turn you into a lustful cock monster.

The whole point of the law is homophobic, to make gay people disappear and to sanction hate and homophobia. It gives the authorities, the church and the skin heads free reign to say whatever they want, but gay people cannot express themselves, to assert their rights, to assert their existence.

It is designed to persecute, punish and marginalise gay people. "Promotion" (as illogical as it is in the context of sexual orientation) doesn't come into it.

20 minutes of nothing thats what!!!

You don't understand, so nothing happened???
The video doesn't show torture, the picture in the links does.

Torture doesn't need to be physical.

I'm not downplaying bullying, I'm pointing out how you're downplaying this incident by:
    • saying that the attackers were doing the boy a favour
    • constantly referring to him being raped by an older man, even though you know the boy was intentionally looking to lose his virginity
    • bizarrely insisting on this binary opposition between getting raped and publicly abused, as though these were the only two options available to the boy
As for your feelings that some people would prefer he'd had sex with the older man than be attacked, good for you, but they're only feelings at the end of the day, aren't they? Like my feeling that you seem to be trying to find any way possible to excuse the attackers.

You are not reading the thread you are just running with what you want to see,I said it was the lesser of two evils not that it was ok.

How do you know it was urine and not beer or petrol?

Just out of curiousity which would you rather the 15 year old has sex with an adult or what happens here?

I read every post. It is most certainly not the lesser of two evils.

A 15 year old teen, at most just under 12 months away from the age of consent, DECIDING to engage in sex for money is in no worse than a gang luring said kid there to intimidate and threaten him, and post it all online and make it available to his family and friends.

How many 15 year olds are having sec in Ireland as we speak? Do you think we should all round them up and intimidate them on YouTube?

    For their ish benefit?

Which do you think will traumatise him more? Making a stupid, but consensual decision or being detained, intimidated and threatened, having the information posted on public and his family informed?

Which do you think is most likely to lose him his family and friends? Which is most likely to get him abuse in the street?

Which is most likely to get him beaten or killed?

Having underage sex for money or being threatened and being humiliated and exposed on the Internet and to his family and friends.

And a huffington post article on the video (I think) said it was urine.

If this is true then the gang is doing him a favour, hardly torture now is it.

Hardly shocked this your attitude. "Oh I'm not homophobic, but I'm against the gays in every single thread about them and I see no harm in this at all, but I'm not homophobic"

And then you say your views and reasoning behind them isn't flat out and utterly moronic.

Plus he's the ignoring the very obvious fact that it was a setup to do this to the boy .

How would they know who he was and what he was planning on doing if it wasnt a set up ? I seriously doubt they just happened on some random guys facebook page who just happened to post all the details about where and when he was gonna prostitute himself.

I cant understand the offence to me preferring what he went through to being raped by an adult.
I think what happened is very wrong but having sex with an adult would have been worse,do you agree?

There is nothing to disagree with in my stance bar me calling it bullying and you calling it torture.

There was no older man, it was a fake ad used to lure him. And this isn't an isolated case, there are plenty more stories like this in Russia.

You're very deliberately using "sexual abuse" in a broad sense, lumping consensual sex between a 15-year old and an older man in with other forms such as non-consensual rape. It's not ideal for a 15-year old to have consensual sex with an older person, but I also don't think it's the worst thing in the world. It could be a great experience, a terrible experience, or a mediocre one. The reality is that 15-year olds have sex all the time, and can often be mature enough to deal with it.

The abuse of this boy though, is unambiguously terrible. I still refuse to compare the two situations directly and choose which one I think is worse. Partly this is because the two situations are not comparable, particularly because we don't know how the sex would have been for him, and partly because I'm not going to play into your ludicrous tactic of making it seem that these were the only two options available to him, which you're deliberately using to make the attack seem less horrible and to place some blame on the boy (e.g. "well, if he wasn't looking to get raped, it wouldn't have happened to him.")

I always find Russian Neo-nazis weird. Do they not realise that Nazis hated Russians and wanted them exterminated or enslaved.

Is homosexuality still illegal in Russia?

Its incredibly weird. Its as if a far Right nationalist Irish Republican group started to called themselves neo-Cromwellians.

You are just making things up.

    Hardly

Against gay marriage -all for irrational reasons, chooses to ignore evidence that contradicts views.

Against gay adoption -all for irrational reasons, chooses to ignore evidence that contradicts viewes.

Sees that public abuse for his sexuality as being for his "own good, hardly torture".

Honestly mate, there's one thing that irritates me, it's not open homophobia but it's the half assed attempt to hide something that you don't like in the slightest bit but are too much of a pussy to outwardly own up to it.

You are a homophobe going by your history of these posts about gay people, but it's pathetic that you hide it just for what people think of you, that's not better. I'd actually prefer someone to be outwardly homophobic to me than to do it behind my back. I'd actually have zero respect for someone that'd do that, strangely, at least I could say that someone who was openly homophobic at least said it out, but people that disguise the very same thing?

    Nah, total pussies.

From the comments on the Youtube video:

    boycott the winter Olympics

    boycott Russian vodka

    boycott Russia and anything Russian

That's good, tarring an entire nation over the actions of a few scumbags.

I think those comments are more in reference to the new law banning the "promotion of homosexuality."
