Kinda pointless really, at his advanced age cataracts can't be far away now rendering the lovely RGB into a RF'ish mess :)

True, I can take off my glasses and even the 1080p gameplay of the ps3 looks like it belongs on the N64!

But I digress, I need to get the most from my modded Megadrive.
I'll give it a try later on.

Just tried the cable out, looks amazeballs!
    Some speed difference too.
Why did I take so long???
    Next up, the Snes!

Another soul converted. The Church of RGB grows richer & stronger by the day. Some difference isn't it

Took you long enough to listen to me. And all that time trying to tell me that composite and RF looked grand at the beers.

Well at least you learned a valuable lesson today: I'm always right.

I would have said the same about an RGB conversion - strange things happen!

Now just have to get Dr. Bob over to RGB and we have the full set... :D

Big difference isn't it, well worth the investment particularly for N64

Saw something a bit weird on ebay for £30 so took a chance at it.

    The auction says it's a display Famicom system;

This is a dummy Nintendo Famicom computer. It is not a console that has been gutted as there are no screw holes and the swtiches on the front are decorative. The controllers have never had leads to them or could be converted into real controllers.

The cartridge eject does move on the front but the Super Mario Bros Game (also just the case) is glued in there. The console opens up and we believe that originally it would have contained sales brochures.

Can't find anything with the google machine. Also just noticed the cart has a slot cut out of it. Strange.

That's an odd item indeed. I'd imagine it was used for promo/demo purposes too, with maybe a few leaflets sticking out of the top and spare ones in the compartment.

Yeah with the slot cut out of the cart I think that would be a good guess.

Strange though that there's no screw molding/signs of wire holes on the controllers. Be cool if it was a really early demo version of the console shell.

That's also a possibility! Let me know if you do find out more about it.

Or you could even use it as a handy dandy drugs storage unit! No one would ever suspect the famicom.

Stick a RaspPi full of emulators in it :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,763 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

It might be a real rarity.
    Don't modify it!
Do you already have a Famicom?
Just fill this one with sweets or something.

If you are determined to do something to it, the Raspberry Pi idea is good but I'd just stick a Nes/Famicom emu on there.
The controllers should be easy to mod.

Agreed, I'd keep it purely as is :)

Don't worry lads, there's no way I'm modding this thing :) . I feel bad enough modding regular consoles as is, no way would I ever alter something which was uncommon.

Going to stick photos up on a NES/Famicom forum somewhere when it arrives and see what they think it is.

On a side note, nope Ciderdude, I don't have a Famicom at the moment. I've been looking at the top loading AV Famicom over the last few weeks and considering buying one. Looks like the US Nes top loader but has AV composite out (the US version only has RF)

Just get a regular famicom av modded?

Did consider it, but I'd need to have a composite AV mod done, as well as a controller extension mod.

The AV Famicom on the other hand has composite out of the box, as well as detachable 'dogbone' controllers.

Just an easier option really! (Plus they also tend not to be piss yellow :D)

In the meantime just do as Atavan says and get a Famicom, they are a lovely design and play pretty much everything, plus you have to mod it, with the AV to start, so also have a crack at extending the controller cables.
    Buy one!!!!

But why would I buy a console which needs an AV and controller extension mod when the AV Famicom comes with both those things out of the box?

    You're all mad! Haha :D

In unrelated news, couple of Birthday GETS!

I've wanted a venus fly trap for years and years. Think I might try and somehow convert his pot into a Mario pipe :pac:

What kinda money do those AV Famicoms go for?

Not the cheapest things in the world. I made an offer of $100 on one last night and the seller came back with a counter of $118.00. Was about the best I could find a full setup for. Postage from Japan is an additional $30.

You can get the US version cheaper, but it'll need to be modded for composite. Might be a better option for yourself with your 1337 skills

Both have no region lockout chip as standard.

As in a top loading NES? You'd still need a converter for Famicom carts though wouldn't you? Yeah I've done the AV mods on the Famicoms before, but factoring in the poxy controller lead lenght means I might just AV mod my own Famicom & sell it off to fund the AV Jap model at some stage

Yeah the top loading NES and the AV Famicom are the same console. Just the AV Famicom has the addition of composite out and takes Famicom carts instead.

If you're looking to start a Famicom cart collection then in that case then go for the AV Famicom and you won't have to deal with any 60->72 pin adapters.

I can't believe there isn't a simple solution to the controller lead thing.
I mean, the only issue is that the controllers are soldered to the main board of the console.
It's surely a simple matter to desolder them and introduce longer cables, or solder the original cables to Nes ports in the side of the machine, then just use a set of recased Nes controllers, that's an easy 5 minute job.
It's a thing I'd love to get done to my Famicom.

You can mod it with controller ports, I think that'd be a really worthy investment.

    This looks pretty clean.
