People who have walked the Camino de Santiago will know it well. Beautiful part of the world, awful to see this happen.

Euronews reporting witness's heard explosions before the train derailed.

Up to 35 now, officials say.
Train was coming from Madrid, full of pilgrims as tomorrow is Santiago's patron day, meaning there could be casualties from anywhere and not only Spanish people.
    Awful.

Yet another train crash with multiple deaths, this time in Spain....Do you think I am being paranoid when I say I get a bad feeling these crashes are possibly being caused by sabotage???

I'd say they'd be claiming responsibility if that were the case. Not much point in committing a terrorist act if nobody realises it was a terrorist act.

just a coincidences sadly if it was terrorist they say straight away don't they ?

Some of these fanatical groups don't believe in propaganda and follow ancient manuscripts to the word where it says enemies are to be destroyed by any means.

Oh,so all of a sudden Muslims did this?

    What would be the point?
Terrorism is about making some kind of statement, there's no point in doing it secretly. If it's a terrorist attack, expect someone to gloat about it.

They have been very frequent and its never fully explained how the crashes have happened. I think there was mention of sabotage for the crash in
    Canada

Perhaps not but it's about ten years since the Madrid bombings so don't get upset if it jumps to people's minds.

If they don't claim responsibility, then there's no terror.

I don't think anyone took responsibility for the Nevsky train bombing in Russia in ~2011. Likewise the human garbage that was responsible for the bombing of that PanAm flight back in the '80s, they wanted it to happen over the Atlantic.

It is more likely this is a broken rail type accident and the 'explosions' heard were probably the impact of the train hitting the wall / bridge

That's shocking. RIP to those that died.

The Spanish papers are saying something about the back engine catching fire (though no idea whether that happened before or after impact). The only reference to explosions so far is that one witness from the local area who said she heard one (not saw it) - that could have been just the sound of the crash, so let's not jump to conclusions yet...

EDIT: El Mundo are actually saying that the authorities have ruled out any attack and are saying it was a derailing on a "difficult curve" in the track. (http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2013/07/24/espana/1374693824.html)

Travelled on the same Alvia trains a few times last summer, really scary to think of this happening. RIP to those poor people :(

Yeah, I did the Camino and used this station to get a train to Madrid on the way back. Awful story.

The "explosions" could have been the carriages hitting the wall by the looks of the photos...metal v concrete.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,094 ✭✭✭wretcheddomain

Up to 45 dead so far according to Sky sources which is 20% of the occupants of the train.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭The_Mask

Looks like the engine and carriages came off the rails on the right hand side and brought itself to a stop against the reinforced walls....right beside access to the tracks :-/
