Here is Met Eireann's forecast as at 16.01 today. Note all the references to precipitation for the coming days up to and including Friday which I have highlighted. Then consider the final paragraph:

"Present indications suggest that the dry and settled conditions will persist into next weekend........" Is this a new definition for dry and settled? :pac:

    24 June 2013 16:01

    Today

Mainly dry with a few brighter or sunny spells developing this evening. However, turning dull with outbreaks of drizzle or light rain in the southwest later.
    Tonight

Tonight, outbreaks of rain and drizzle will affect parts of Connaught and Munster, but Ulster and Leinster will stay mainly dry, with some clear spells for a time. Winds will become light, variable and it will be mild, lowest temperatures 9 to 11 degrees.
    hr.gif

    Tomorrow

Tomorrow will begin cloudy or overcast with patches of rain and drizzle spreading further east and north during the morning. The rain and drizzle will give way to a few well scattered showers for the afternoon but it will become mainly dry with sunshine likely. Light to moderate, northwesterly breezes will develop and temperatures will rise to between 15 and 18 degrees.

    Outlook

Tuesday night: will be a largely dry night, although a few showers will affect parts of the northeast coast. It will be a little chilly with clear skies and temperatures will fall to between 6 and 9 degrees in light wind.

High pressure will cover the country on Wednesday and will give mainly dry conditions with some pleasant spells of sunshine. Highest temperatures will range from 15 to 19 degrees in light northwest winds. It will cloud over on Wednesday night as outbreaks of rain move into the northwest. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees.

On Thursday outbreaks of rain will spread eastwards across the country during the morning and afternoon. Highs of 15 to 18 degrees in moderate westerly winds. The rain will clear to the east on Thursday night, but another band of rain looks like moving into the west coast.

On Friday there will be light outbreaks of rain during the day, with some brief sunny spells. It will be a little milder on Friday with highs of 17 to 20 degrees.

Present indications suggest that the dry and settled conditions will persist into next weekend, with temperatures in the high teens or the low twenties.

I pointed out exactly the same contradiction a few pages back. Seems they have no one
who can marshal what they really intend to convey.

    I knew you'd be along, Mike !

I propose you as marshal :)

    I've defended them before but....

Thats an extremely odd forecast. Some parts of Ireland will see rain every day from now until Saturday, and all parts will be wet Thursday and Friday, and then the last paragraph?

    Nuts.

Exactly. Just as it ever was.

We all know that ME are capable of accurate, detailed forecasts. The fact that they don't is probably due to Weatherdial & the commercial department. If they give detailed forecasts then no one would need to pay.

I rely on accurate forecasts. I find Sky, yr.no etc to be way more accurate than ME even though they are only computer projections.

Last night after the 9pm news Evelyn was on and she said that we were in for a fine warm weekend with high pressure over the Country and temps around 20 degrees, this morning Gerry was on the radio and he said that they did not see the weekend turning out as they thought yesterday and that present indications show cool temps with rain or showers, how in Gods name can it change so much in a few hours.

We're going to be right on the boundary of the Azores high all week, a minuscule shift north or south changes everything. While it would be nice to see more use of probability & certainty/uncertainty in their forecasts, all they can do is give the best guidance available to them at the time of airing

Came across this on my Hard Drive I saved it off the ME site a few years ago, I think it was in October...not leaving anything to chance were they!

The funny thing is despite other forecasts suggesting far better weather including mt cranium's and the TV forecast, this forecast seems to have been 100% accurate with the exception of what is probably a spelling / grammar / translation error regarding the word "persist" - the word "resume" would have made it read right.

Gerry Murphy on the weather forecast just there.

"only the south west of the country got a light bit of rain, the rest of the country was dry. "

Could he have been any wronger. it bucketed in Athlone from 10 AM - 2 PM and then he shows the radar and it shows the rain crossing the whole country in a solid line....

    Ah Gerry.

The south east well Waterford at any rate has been dry all day, all weekend, all week in fact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,042 ✭✭✭Storm 10

It lashed rain all morning in Galway and the radar showed it, light rain it was not, I love the way Jerry says the week ahead will be fine but it wont be completely dry :D

June stats are interesting for their divergences esp rainfall

    http://www.met.ie/climate/MonthlyWeather/sum1.pdf

Carlow, Johnstown and Claremorris less than half the historic average for the month while Cork and Valencia nearly 50% higher!

In Waterford it was definitely a pretty dry and sunny month.

Here's a weird one from the Met Eireann site as accessed at 10.00 this morning:
    22 July 2013 07:59

    Today

Some scattered showers over the northern half of the country early this morning, but many areas dry with sunny spells. Scattered showers during the afternoon and evening, mainly in Munster, Connacht and the midlands. A few may be thundery. Warm with highest temperatures of 21 to 26 degrees and light southeasterly breezes.

The word "degrees" is displays as a blue link and when you click on it you get to a site that my McAfee system warns -

    Warning: Dangerous Site
    Whoa!
Are you sure you want to go there?

http://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(removed real link)... may be risky to visit.

Why were you redirected to this page?

When we visited this site, we found it exhibited one or more risky behaviors.

    Should someone tell them?

Opened up the site again in a separate tab and there is no link - I've now got the identical page in two separate tabs; one with the link highlighted and the other without it.

Never seen anything like that on ME, sounds like the problem is in your browser, sometimes you pick up nasty little bits of malware that start inserting links into keywords on random pages so it looks like the page you're visiting is running the ads, run Malwarebytes and see if it gets rid of it or just google the site its directing you to and you'll find a removal guide somewhere.

We queried this with our web partners, Fusio, and we're pretty sure that the issue is not a problem with the site but with the user’s browser. As Thargor says, it may have been hijacked and have a plugin running that is hyperlinking certain words to other sites. We recommend you check your browser for possible compromise

Fair play to Evylen on the 9oc weather for some facts on weather again.

Just looking at the website, the numbers nearest me are for Johnstown Castle Wexford, rainfall figures are pretty dramatic vis-a-vis 2012. As things stand the last 3 months will need to be as wet as the first 9 combined to get near the level for 2012!

The link to the old rainfall radar http://www.met.ie/latest/rainfall_radar-old.asp has disappeared off the www.met.ie site

I could never get used to the newer one as I don't like the bland colours.

yet again met.ie coming up short, nothing for Wednesday
    Tomorrow

Tuesday will be fresh and bright with some good sunny spells. There will be further scattered showers tomorrow, with occasionally heavy falls likely. It will be another windy day with fresh and gusty westerly winds in the morning, which will ease off towards evening. Highs of 10 to 12 degrees.

    Outlook

Headline : Unsettled weather will continue for the rest of the week and over the coming weekend.

Wednesday night : Scattered showers will continue in Atlantic coastal counties and it will be windy there, with fresh and gusty southwesterly winds. Becoming mostly dry elsewhere, with clear intervals and lighter winds. Min. 4 to 8 Celsius.

Anyone else noticing Siobhan Ryan putting in the words Now and There into sentences for no apparent reason?

    She says things like,

So for tomorrow morning now, we can say that it will be cold and dry . . .
The rain will clear from the west there, followed by bright and sunny . . .

    Just an observation.

It is always quite obvious when she writes the forecast.
