Played a fair bit of golf over the last weekend, mostly quite poorly!!!

Friday, took the day of & headed out with my Dad & Godfather to the GUI Skills Challenge in Carton. Was a bit of craic. I came first out of the 3 of us, but thats not much to brag about at all!!!

After that we had a quick bite of lunch & headed up to Kilcock to play in the open singles. Had probably my worst day ever off the tee. No consistency & a mis-hit was as likely to be a Push fade as a pulled draw? Managed a miserable 25 points. But the sun beamed all day so I won't complain too much.

Saturday was then out in Dunmurry Springs on another breathless hot day. Managed to improve a bit, 29 points. Varied from the sublime to the ridiculous. on the 5th hit a perfect 3 hybrid out, caught the downslope & ran down to about 50 yards to the flag. Proceeded to scratch from there. Followed that up by birdying the infamous Par 5 6th  Was a bit more consistent off the tee, but had a couple of moments of madness underclubbing on some approaches.

Sunday then, was out for Captains Day in Grange Castle. Started off in blistering fashion, birdied the index 1 first, the par, par, to have 9 points after 3 holes.

Followed this up with treble bogey, bogey, treble bogey, to have 10 points after 6 holes

Carried on this sort of theme for the rest of the round. Ended up scoring 32 points with 5 scratches on the card. Back 9 was made up of 6 pars & 3 scratches. 4/5 of those scratches were the result of a ball OOB or in a hazard. I'll let myself off with the OOB on 18, as I had nothing to really play for & it was the longest drive hole, so went for it, turned the club over a fraction too much and the draw turned a little hooky. The 5th scratch was due to a miscount of strokes. Had a tap in putt left for a point & picked up my ball thinking I had no stroke on the hole.

    1 birdie
    10 pars
    2 bogeys
    5 scratches

Overall putted well and pretty happy with my golf on the Sunday. There were plenty of positives to take from the round (and a few negatives to move on from too!!!)

74 at St Margaret's on Sunday.

    1 double bogey
    1 bogey
    14 pars
    2 birdies

I hit only 7/14 fairways but 15/18 greens helped a lot. My putting was a bit iffy, I holed a couple of 10 footers but not much else. My lagging was fairly average and lots of work needs to be done there. Still, fairly consistent round and one I'm happy with.

27 points in Mitchelstown last Saturday.
Started off with 3 1 pointers to par the 4th, index 1 worth me 4 points.
One off level 2's walking off the par 3 14th(having birdied the 13th), and duly scratched my way home. Zilch, nada, not a single point for the last 4 holes!!!

Fair disappointed on the way home that day.

You can always tell the bad rounds by the amount of days it takes to post them ;)

    So here goes.

Last Saturday I continued my run of poor form with 30 points in the Captains Plate. That's the first competitive round hitting 30 in a month. Hoping to peak sometime around October :(

I've even started to count down the counting comp weeks left.... A sure sign of desperation.

Captains Day on Sunday gone in Grange Castle. Great weather along with great scoring resulted in an excellent day and night (my head the next morning at work was thumping) especially for the winner who came in with an aggregate score of 83 points. I ended up with 76pt which I was quite happy with but I should done better as the course was there for the taking. Poor judgement on club selection where I went with a rescue instead of my 5 Iron cost me at least 4-6 pts in the closing stretch.

15th managed a 6 from just off the fairway 180 yards out this should have been a par and at worst a 5
16th managed a 7 from middle of fairway took rescue which I topped nearly into hazard and although got lucky I had a dreadful stance which compounded my initial poor decision. On the day with some common sense I should have punched a low flighted shoo up to the unprotected green and left a good chance of a par 4
17th managed par 3 with some tidy play from fringe
18th another 7 which was due to two poor shots a drive that ended in the trees which left me no choice other than top chop out sideways and then mistakenly chose the rescue again from the semi rough when the trusty 5 iron was the correct option. This is a straight forward par 5 which should always provide a potential birdie chance but certainly a par.

Given the conditions I should have known better, although to be fair I did demonstrate solid decision making for much of the two rounds

Handicap went from 17.1 to 16.2 over the 36 holes and is down from my initial handicap of 20 when I started in Feb

I'm taking the positives from the event given it was my first ever Captains Qualifier/Day.

Unbelievable Jeff!!! He's only gone and done it again. Right up to the by-line and hoofed it out over the corner flag into the terraces:pac:

29 points 2 scratches. 20 points on the front 9. That is all.

I knew it was coming. 41 points off 9. 76 gross can't remember greens in regulation but was very high. Happy days!!

22pts on the front nine, 14 on the back nine....aw raging the way I let a good round go.. I was 4over after 9 and parred 10 and then the wheels came off big time with 2scratches and two one pointers-at least I finished with a par so will try take the positives, yeah right!

Mid-week Stableford comp at Skerries last night.

Was looking to build on the cut I got last weekend and the fact that I qualified for Captain's next Saturday.

Hit a bad 30 pts and 0.1 back (12 on the front and 18 on the back ..).

Driving was spotty, bunker play spotty but all else was reasonable.

Worst was that I was stiff and sore out on the course so am going to rest up (i.e. not practice) between now and Saturday.

29pts off 16 around new ross, lovely course. Well looked after considering the very dry wether we had the past few weeks.

Hit the ball pretty well, just couldnt get the yardage sorted in my head and over clubbed on a few added to not being able to get the ball to stop on the green left me with alot to do with the putter.

Played in a 9-hole comp this evening. Started with an EAGLE on the first hole!! The first time ever for me. Hit a decent enough drive but faded left. then hit a peach of a 9-iron over trees and a greenside bunker. At first I thought i had hit a good one, got closer and realised it was really good, then closer again and realised that it was actually in the hole resting against the flag :) 5 points and -2 after 1!

Continued to play really well, iron striking was really crisp and clean. Had 16 points after 6. Then 3-putted the 7th for a bogey but had no shot. Then trying to play conservative on 8 (our index 1), I hit a really nice rescue off the tee, caught it lovely and went straight where I wanted but I misjudged the distance and left myself no shot to the green. Tried to punch a 7-iron down the fairway but was careless and hit a tree. Then had to recover from a dry ditch and made 6, another 1 pointer. On 9, a short par three, hit a wedge off the tee but was too relaxed, pushed it a small bit right, it clipped a tree and went oob. Put the second one on the green and walked off with a 5, another 1 point. :(

Still, all in all, a really pleasing evening, loads of good shots, my first ever eagle and second round of the captains on Sunday. 19 points, would have been happy with that on the 1st tee (but not 2nd!). Finally finding some form at the right time.

    Baltray by burgomeister08, on Flickr

A fabulous morning at Baltray today in the Intermediate Scratch Cup, Lads... gorgeous weather with still a bit of breeze there to take into account... I think that's my 6th time playing Baltray and only my second off White tees, it really is a fantastic golf course.

I'm very happy with my end score (-1 Nett, Hc 16) and happy enough with how I hit the ball. I started off with a treble-bogey 7 but, I honestly walked off the green feeling pretty good! I hit 3-iron off every tee today and on the first I ripped one with a draw down the middle. But it ran to within six inches of the bunker which I didn't think I could reach. So I had no choice but to PUTT it about five yards back into play!

From there I made another good swing (5-iron) but caught a bad lie to the side of the green and a couple of poor chips and two putts from the fringe later we had seven... Birdie on 3 got me going (pitched to about 18 inches from 70 yds) and I had another treble on the montrous 11 which was playing right back into the wind today... if you were gonna make 7 anywhere today, it was on 11!

Nothing gives you that warm fuzzy feeling going home more than a birdie on the last - especially one that gets you in under your handicap... all in all, a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf.

Had my best round ever today achieved by goal of breaking 100 strokes in a club competition. I fact I smashed it, 88 strokes off 24 to give me a nett 64 should be good enough for a prize to I hope. Key to today was keeping the ball in play first time in a long time I completed a round with the ball I started. Looking forward to a nice cut now (should make a nice dent in the 32 straight 0.1's :D ) and take me of the bottom of the boards handicap leader board.

Not a great day. 35 points, 92 strokes. 39 putts...

I count 11 efforts at a birdie with the flat stick in hand (green, fringe, and fluffy stuff) and only one sunk. I had one run of five holes with three 3putts and a 4putt. awful stuff.

I was looking at the trend in my scores and 92 actually ranks ok, 4 penalty strokes and stone cold with the putter. So to play badly and still score better than median for the year points at an improvement, but conditions favoured me - 3 drives finishing more than 300 yards down the fairway.

Half decent round today after a few weeks on the injured list.
72 blows (+2) playing off 8. Lost a ball on 16th, hit it into a bush on 8th and missed a couple of short putts, but fairly solid most of the way round. 3 birdies on the back nine really helped.
Didn't hit a whole lot of greens but most of the misses were only a yard or two off the edges leaving reasonably straightforward up and downs.

Does any one else ever sense a good round coming? I have that feeling now, when you know a very good round is possible as you walk onto the first tee.

I shot +7 on Saturday and +6 today while still leaving two or three shots out there by missing some easy putts. Hoping everything will just click one of these days and I can beat my personal best of +4.

I was playing off 22 just two weeks ago, now playing off 11 and hoping to get down to single figures before the summer is out.

Yeah I get that feeling too. It's when you know your game is in good shape and bar any stupid mistakes you will have a great round!! Good shooting by the way!!

Dusted off the cobwebs affecting my game and managed my second cut of the season. 41 points off 8, beating css by 6 strokes.
my putting has been poor and resulted in me seeking some advice on here. I had bought an adjustable length ping and realized that while the length was grand I had the face closed by a few degrees. A quick adjustment later and the ball has stopped going left. Only missed one short putt but that was as a result of being more worried about standing on my playing partners line. It also resulted in me losing on a countback so always remember to mark your ball lads.
looking forward to my next round already. Isn't the warm air and hard ground great!

Played in a fourball scramble yesterday in Bunclody. Fabulous course. We finished up with a 68 (-4), 51.4 nett. Dropped 2 shots on both of the par 3s on the front due to sloppy play. Happy enough though, I birdied a par 3 on the back 9 single handedly and holed several good putts for pars and holed the majority of our birdies. Enjoyed the day.

Nett 82 off 15 in Moate GC Captains Prize Qualifier yesterday left me 6 shots outside qualification and I was very disappointed as I had a decent front 9 followed by a crap back 9. Been the story of my year. Iron shots particularly bad. Have got extra length and accuracy with new driver but letting myself down with indifferent iron play. Only highlight was a birdie on the tough 6th. MUST DO BETTER!!!

Monday Open in Tullamore today, 35 points off 6, 1 over par for 13 holes and then finished Double, scratch, bogey, par, bogey. Terrible finish, I got really frustrated with the slow play so that did not help thing, almost 4 and a half hours. 32 putts. Really disappointed with my approach play from 100 yards, and really disappointed with my par 5 performance with Par Bogey Scratch.

a casual 9 holes saw 3 birdies on Sunday. a par 3 and two par 5's. That was a first.

39 points in the captains prize on sunday in Castleisland. 42 won it. I had 21 on the front but couldn't get a putt on the back nine and missed two short ones for pars. I finished 9th. I'm neither happy or sad about it. I played solid. Just kept thinking one shot at a time, which prevented my mind from drifting, which was good. Got a small cut (0.3) so still stuck on 14.

You've just played 2 weeks of unreal golf

33 pts in mid-week open today, very disappointing blank on the last, first round back down off 15. Didn't play very well but scrambled it round all day then just played the last like a complete beginner... Ah well, tomorrow's another day!
