I think there passed onto AGS who decide if they're fining them. I went past one very slightly over 80 in a 80 zone last night. There was a money safety van hiding over the brow of a hill after Monasterevin.

If I see anything of I'll eat my hat.

I thought the process was automated and not AGS at all. Not even sure where I would find that sort of info or what made me think that.

This kind of crap (points + fine for 85km in an 80 zone etc) is why I will always flash to warn others of these hazard speed van$.

Right. Thinking about Olga has brought me to the next phase, which is looking online for accessories etc.

What do we think of chip tuning boxes from ebay like this one?

They claim 350 bhp/660nm which is phenomenal. Makes me think, especially the bhp anyway, is too much for the engine.

Again dipethane and most of those injector cleaners are sh1te. I can't recommend Cataclean enough!

Ran a bottle through two weeks ago and mpg has gone up considerably!

Get a reputable tuner to custom map it, I've never seen a tuning box do what it's supposed to do

You would need your brain examined to plug that into your car.Give Joe power a shout and give your car the level of professionalism it deserves (even if it is a diesel) :D

I would have DMS tuning in the UK do it, they have a good rep for high BHP 535D specific tunes. I wouldnt be as worried about the engine as I would be about your transmission however.

Is it true remaps are undetectable.

    From chippedeire.ie

    What about insurance?
This is up to you. We have to advise that you inform your insurance companies that the remap has been carried out but as there is no way for them to read this map, it is up to you what you do. It is your responsibility.

Well the Insignia Has broken down for the second time in the last 7 days yesterday/today:rolleyes:

Last wednesday the battery very suddenly deteriorated It started on a jump on wednesday evening and wouldn't crank at all on thursday morning, It just went into some mode where the hazard lights flashed (couldn't turn them off) and nothing else at all would work at all.
Then yesterday evening it gave a coolant low warning and then again this morning (though it was topped up last night) Very annoying for a car that's less than 3 years old and well looked after etc

The worst part is that we have been given a very crappy astra 1.3 diesel and it doesn't even have air con :mad::mad: Didn't think you could get that in a new car in that class these days, you'd want to have serious mental problems to pay your own money for a new car like that:eek:

I believe the are pretty much untraceable, but if you find yourself in a position where your ECU is being scanned by your insurance company then i think the re map will be the least of your worries!:D

Nah I will blame people of ignorance when they say that the only reason anyone buys a BMW is to one up their neighbours and feel "better". Its a dumb off the cuff comment from someone with a professed zero interest driving an appliance. Being popular and/or successful doesnt automatically make anything/one a ****ty sellout. Granted I do know some people that did that, but same type of people flip-flop between Lexus, Audi and Merc too.

Why is everything taken so literal on this forum?!

Obviously I didn't mean the only reason anyone ever boughts/buys a BMW is to show up the neighbours. But it is a part of the BMW image, and a prominent one, at that.

Who cares if I don't know much about cars; I'm still entitled to an opinion and surely not being overly clued in to everything that's going on in the car world would make my opinion very valid (as I'd be part of the 'joe soap' brigade who will make up the majority of drivers out there: Not everyone's into cars!).

BMW definitely is (or was, anyway) a 'higher class' kind of brand.Driven by those who are doing well and can afford to be a bit flashy.

Personally, I don't look at badges and think of a particular type of person driving the car ('BMW drivers are as*holes, Audi's are always up your ass, etc.) but I am observant enough to see that BMW definitely do push themselves as being an upper market, luxury car that should be sought after. Much like Dacia promote themselves as being an affordable vehicle for the everyman (opposite side of the spectrum, but still valid point).

Toyota, Ford, etc. will tend to be the middlemen and try to be affordable (but not too affordable), but push their reliable nature, to be an attractive purchase. BMW, Mercedes and such, will use their name and badge itself to try and sway people ("but it's a BMW!").

This is all fairly obvious stuff.

Personally, I always wanted to pick up a BMW. There was one that always caught my eye (before I wanted the Rav4) and I thought it was a great looking car. I think it's a 3 series from 01-02ish (I'm not sure when they rehashed it's appearance or how long it lasted).

    This kinda thing:

    2002-bmw-3-series-325i_100029216_m.jpg

I think the squared off, boxy kind of look is nice. I'm not so fond of the new ones.

My original point was that the sheer number of BMWs littering the roads of late (definitely a 'tiger throwback') isn't helping the BMW image as a whole. When a BMW can be the everyday person's first car to learn to drive in, the brand doesn't quite seem so exclusive anymore.

Mercedes are, from what I can see, the new 'exclusive' brand, for the most part. I'd say Lexus seem to have that kind of an image, too, but they're still more in BMW territory in my opinion. And I am entitled to my opinion.

I don't care about the image or impressing the neighbours, that's why I bought an 05 (although the year didn't figure in my criteria, only the model) and it's debadged.

I do care about how it drives, that's why I got a 3l petrol.

I do care about how I feel while driving it, that's why I got upgraded nappa comfort seats, prof wide screen sat nav, logic 7 sound... which are not visible to the neighbours...

    +1
BMW's owned by posters on the motors forum are usually the higher capacity non boggo spec interior/trim/engine. We buy them for the driving experience and debadging the car is a good thing. (or rebadging a 535 as a 518i :P )

On the other hand the type of people who buy a 520d in their droves to have the badge in the driveway and for the chaape tax are only buying it as a status symbol. These people are not interested in cars other than as a vehicle that goes from a-b.

You could say the same about the 1.6 twin spark 156. :pac:
    There's heapes of them around!

    The mind boggles.
"From what you can see". Whats actually happening is BMW is becoming more popular and taking significant marketshare from Mercedes (for various legitimate reasons, check reliability index from 2001 to 2010 Mercs) and other brands thanks to their unexpected technology leap over the CO2 emissions VRT/Tax system (making their cars cheaper than ever). "Not exclusive" has a negative connotation (and inversely suggests something positive about say, Mercedes), a more accurate summary would be "more accessible".

Your interpretation that something thats commercially failing is "exclusive" while a major success is "a common tiger throwbacK" is frankly laughable. But as you say, you can have you opinion, but lets water them with some facts:
    New-Used-FirstLicensebymake2012.jpg

Note that chart is from 2012 and is therefore well post Tiger/boom idiocy. BMW (and Audi) are doing commercially excellent. Merc are not and Lexus (also "more exclusive") are doing pants. The reasons, as noted, are do to meeting requirements, pricing and reliability vs their peers. You can be sure in a recession, other people, have checked out the best buy for them and not just keeping up with the Jones'.

PS: One of those 53 Mercedes imports in that period was mine!

Any petrol stations selling 98 unleaded petrol nowadays?

I have just read some horror stories (destroyed pistons) of 350Zs being run exclusively on 95 petrol.

Virtually all petrol fuel here is 95Octane, with Maxol's E5 being described as 99.2Octane, though in reality seems to be around 97Octane.

Cars that will have a (serious) problem with this are limited to Jap (JDM) imports running 100-Octane fuel maps on their ECU. These cars should get a 95Octane map or run water-meth injection and 97Octane E5.
