Can you still take them to the SCC? Where do you address it to, the administrators or head office?

You'd be so far down the list of creditors it wouldn't be worth it. Open to correction.

I hope everyone managed to get delivery of the stuff they'd paid for. My thread suggesting expediting delivery got locked rather quickly.

Due a delivery on Friday, had a chance to get it this morning. Didn't know the update so said no, leave it until Friday.
Spoke to the delivery guy this afternoon, he has been told that his services are no longer required. He also said that he saw the suite wrapped and labelled and ready to go.
I rang the administrators and they will not know anything for a few days.
    Ah well such is life.

If that can be proven, I wouldn't want to be a director in that ex company...

As far as I and others were aware, our store would be kept open for some time. But we received our notices this morning.

I hope everybody waiting on their furniture gets sorted asap.

The front line staff get a shafted along with everyone else when this sort of thing happens, so my sympathies - however as I say good sales people aren't out of work long.

We got our suite delivered today as scheduled. Two decent guys, cost plus sofa lads, who know as much as I do about what is going on.
Mind you, the administrator says they are selling the business as a going concern, yet the van had the cost plus logos scraped off this morning.

Glad to know people are still getting their stuff.
I'll feel terrible if any of my customers dont receive their stuff :(

cost plus sofas have more or less just stolen a grand from me, i bought a sofa in their 'closing down sale' and was told it would be delivered within 2 wks, 2 wks later no sign, so i went in again and he looked up my order and said there was a slight delay and it would be another 2 wks blah blah apologies, so waited another 2 wks (store is now closed completely) rang the customer helpline and was told theyre gone into receivership, and basically not to put much hope into getting my sofa. is there anything i can do about this? i actually got a loan from the credit union to pay for it, i might aswell just have left it on a park bench, :(

Ring the administrator and ask them what is happening. The customer service number got me to a rep who didn't even know they were closed. It's Cost Plus in England you get through to.
We got our sofa on time (although it was physically in the shop when they went into admin).
    Number is here
The administrators rang us after it was delivered to make sure we had got it.

The other option I looked at was a charge back. TSB told me to send the letter from the administrators (in the link above) and explain the sofa had not come and they would do a chargeback and refund the money. Unless you paid cash this is an option.

ya, it was the administrator in england my fella talked to, they said they would try and honour any contracts but because cps owe so much money they prob hadn't paid for any new furniture and the admin said they had the key to the warehouse in dub but it's highly unlikely my sofa is there and prob wouldn't be releasing any of the furniture anyway.they obviously sold it to me knowing that they were going into receivership, i just can't believe they're getting away with it. and i paid cash, dope that i am, in case i spent it on something else. thanks for the advice though, and glad you got your stuff. i am hopping mad, it's a joke that they can do this and get away with it.

    Hi, Shirlo.
I'm sorry things are going haywire with your order, but please be aware that neither myself nor any of the other sales staff were aware of when the shops would close permanently.
As I said previously, we were told it would be another few weeks before we would be closed completely. So we were actually told about the company going in to admin at the same time as the public as far as I know.

Keep in touch with the administrators in the mean time anyway.
    Hope they get you sorted.

Please tell me you didn't pay with cash?

If you paid by via debit you can get your money back from your bank, but you need to act quickly.

Not to scaremonger but nobody should purchase big ticket items with cash for, at least, the next 5 years. It's just too damn risky.

Put your cash into your credit card account and pay with yer CC. There are an awful lot of companies [big and small] on the breadline at the moment. It's going to take a few years to shake things up.

    hi shane
sorry, i didn't mean to imply the sales staff knew they were going bust, i meant the company itself had to have known. i will keep trying the administrators anyway thanks

Don't know if this is relevant or not, but I saw a CPS van 08D (reg) down at the airport end of the M50 today.

They must still be doing some trade so?

I bought a new house in 2007, waited ten months to have the keys handed over, and because of that had to store furniture etc for a time. I had experiences with a few retailers:
    1) CPS...they were not too bad but after a month I was left with no option but to stick in a storage area
    2) Reid's. Absolute disaster...was told when buying lounge suite, that they will hold for 10 days. 11th day phone rings at 09h00 wanting to know where to deliver the furniture to.
    3) Arnotts. What a pleasure. We bought King Koil beds off them, and between them and KK wedidn't have to worry one bit about storage, they kept them in Kilcullen for us..

First 2 are either gone or in the process of folding, the third who GAVE REAL customer Service are still going, and long may they do so!

    From the small claims court

Your claim has been rejected as this company was placed into Administration on the 16/07/2013 and consequently all queries from customers should be addressed to UHY Hacker Young LLP, Quadrant House, 4, Thomas Moore Square, London E1W 1YW, email:- rg@uhy-uk.com. The fee paid for this Application has been refunded to your bank account.

    What to do now?

That was always going to be their response. In effect, the company doesn't exist anymore.

I'm afraid it's now time to write to the administrator. Expect very little and it to take along time coming, if anything and if at all.

I was in the new place in Longford that's connected with www.bigmickey.ie selling Harrison beds and there was a chap there buying a bed from Dublin that had just bought and paid for a bed in Cost Plus the day before they went bang. He knew the sales guy well, who assured him they were staying open and then the very next day they were gone and he paid in cash. What a bummer ?

Spent just under 1400 euro on couches here a month ago which were due to be delivered last week. My wife called the administrator who advised that there is bugger all they can do as we are way down the list of creditors.
Have applied to bank for refund as thankfully I used a visa debit card. Absolutely raging with this shower and their audacity. Feel sorry for the staff who seem equally duped.

Ill keep updating this thread as things progress. Has anyone ever gotten a visa debit refund before?

Cost Plus Sofa have a place on the headford road in Galway selling off all the stock. We were told that all shops are sending stuff there for sale. I'd suggest calling out with a van and taking it.

I've never heard of Visa Debit refunds, thats not to say they don't happen and the Visa rules are different for debit and credit cards. You don't however get the legislative protections when using a debit card, hence why a credit card is preferred.

Please let us know how you get on.

Cork, Portlaoise, Ballymun and. Long mile are reopening under a new name this weekend. You could pop in and ask somebody working there what the story is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 nialled

That's interesting about Galway- I wonder how they can legally trade if they are under administration?
Similarly, I would have to assume that the stores reopen ing this weekend are an entirely different company moving into those premises. I can actually see the dublin store I bought the gear from out my window at work and if anyone opens those doors ill be over there like a hot snot!

What happens is that all the stock is gathered up and sold at fire-sale prices to some new company probably with the same directors as the old company, the liquidators are happy to be getting a few Euro for the banks so say/do nothing to stop this.

Got a letter form the administrators Hacker and Young today stating that they won't be in a position to do any repairs or servicing will be completed at this stage.

I sent an email saying that I turned down CPS's offer of repair and im waiting on a refund. I'd say I'm in for a similar response sadly

In today's Irish Independent. Sorry that I don't have a link. Saw it in the print paper, and can't find the corresponding article online.
The managment of CPS has bought the assets of the troubled company from its administrators to sell off its existing stock.

The furniture seller, which until recently employed 100 people across 20 stores, will now trade as Colossal Clearance Centres. Its main asset, a stockholding of sofas, beds and tables, will be sold off through 4 large stores in Ballymun, the Long Mile Road in Dublin, Little Island in Cork and Portlaois in Laois, all of which opened yesterday.

So, allegedly, CPS Management drove the company to the wall. Allegedly, knowingly took money off customers up until the day before closing. Allegedly, left many employees short. And NOW, effectively, purchase back their company for pennies in the pound?

    Seems a win-win ... for them.
